We rejoice with you in the precious gift of your son, a young believer who loves the Lord, delights in His Word, and finds joy in prayer and worship. It is a beautiful thing to see a child’s heart so tender toward God, and we praise Him for the way He is already at work in your son’s life. Your commitment to teaching him to seek God’s kingdom first is bearing fruit, and we pray that foundation will sustain him through every trial.
We understand the heaviness in your heart as you watch your son struggle with disappointment on the soccer field. The pain of unmet expectations, especially when he has believed so strongly that God would answer, can feel overwhelming for a child. And now, to add to that burden, the cruelty of teammates who mock and belittle him must grieve you deeply. No parent should have to see their child wounded by the words of others, and no child should feel his worth is tied to his performance.
Let us first affirm what you have already spoken over your son: his value is not found in goals scored, trophies won, or the approval of others. Scripture tells us in 1 Samuel 16:7, "But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Don’t look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.'" God sees your son’s heart, his love for Him, his faith, his kindness, and that is where his true identity lies. We pray that he would come to know this truth more deeply than any lie the enemy or his peers might whisper.
We must also address the bullying he is facing. God hates injustice, especially when it is directed at the vulnerable. Psalm 34:18-19 says, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord delivers him out of them all." We rebuke the spirit of cruelty and mockery that has taken root among his teammates in the name of Jesus. We declare that your son is not a target for ridicule but a child of the Most High, fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). We pray for divine protection over his heart and mind, that he would not internalize the lies being spoken over him.
As for his faith in scoring goals, it is not wrong for him to believe God for good things. Scripture encourages us to ask and believe (Mark 11:24). However, we must also teach him that God’s answers are not always immediate or in the form we expect. Sometimes, God allows delays or even "no" answers to teach us deeper lessons about trust, perseverance, and His sovereignty. James 1:2-4 reminds us, "Count it all joy, my brothers, when you fall into various temptations, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Let endurance have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." We pray that your son would learn to trust God not just for outcomes, but for His presence and purpose in every circumstance.
For the match tomorrow, we pray that your son would play with joy, free from the weight of expectation. May he remember that his identity is in Christ, not in his performance. We ask God to fill him with courage and confidence, not in his own strength, but in the knowledge that he is loved unconditionally by his Heavenly Father. If it is God’s will, we pray for a breakthrough, whether in a goal scored, a moment of sportsmanship, or an opportunity to show Christ’s love to his teammates. But more than anything, we pray that he would leave the field with his faith strengthened and his heart at peace.
We also lift up the teammates who have been unkind. Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." We pray that God would soften their hearts and open their eyes to the harm they are causing. May they see your son through God’s eyes, as a fellow image-bearer, deserving of respect and kindness. We ask that God would bring godly influences into their lives to teach them the value of love and compassion.
Finally, we want to encourage you as a parent. It is not easy to watch your child struggle, but your role in speaking truth, praying over him, and modeling trust in God is invaluable. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 says, "These words, which I command you today, shall be on your heart; and you shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise up." You are doing exactly what God has called you to do. Keep pointing your son to Jesus, even in the disappointments. Remind him that God is close to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18) and that He works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts for this precious child You have entrusted to his parents. Lord, we thank You for his love for You, his hunger for Your Word, and his heart of prayer. We ask that You would draw him even closer to You during this season of disappointment and hurt. Strengthen his faith, Lord, and help him to see that his worth is found in You alone.
We rebuke the spirit of bullying and mockery that has been directed at him. In the name of Jesus, we declare that no weapon formed against him shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). We ask that You would surround him with Your protection, both on and off the soccer field. Give him the courage to stand firm in his identity as Your beloved child, and fill him with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).
Father, we pray for his teammates. Soften their hearts, Lord, and open their eyes to the harm they have caused. May they come to know You and the love You have for each of them. We ask that You would bring godly influences into their lives to teach them kindness, respect, and compassion.
For the match tomorrow, we ask that You would go before him. Whether he scores a goal or not, may he play with joy and leave the field with his faith strengthened. Help him to trust in Your timing and Your plans, knowing that You are working all things for his good.
We also lift up his parents to You, Lord. Give them wisdom, patience, and strength as they guide him through this season. Help them to model trust in You, even in the face of disappointment. May their home be a place of peace, love, and unwavering faith.
We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the One who loves this child even more than we do. Amen.
