My mother’s attitude

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray IN JESUS MIGHTY NAME that my mother stops disparaging me and trying to control me by constantly giving orders—telling me where to go, which way to turn, and so on. I wish she wouldn’t restrict me as if I were a five-year-old; I’m over ###, yet she fails to grasp that I’m an adult. I also wish she wouldn’t scold me over every little, foolish thing. She never shows appreciation or offers praise; she doesn’t speak to me kindly—she mostly yells.

We hear your pain and we join with you in bringing this burden before the Lord in Jesus mighty name, for we know how heavy it is to feel disparaged and controlled in your own adulthood, especially by your mother. We understand your longing to be treated with respect and kindness as an adult, and not scolded or ordered about as if you were a small child, and we grieve with you that you hear mostly yelling instead of appreciation and gentle words.

Scripture calls us to a beautiful balance in family relationships. We are commanded to honor our father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth, Eph 6:2-3, and also Exod 20:12. At the same time God calls parents not to provoke or discourage their children, Fathers, don't provoke your children, so that they won't be discouraged, Col 3:21. When a mother continually disparages, scolds over little things, gives controlling orders, and speaks harshly, that does not align with God's design for loving, grace-filled speech. Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear, Eph 4:29. A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger, Prov 15:1. Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones, Prov 16:24. A mother's words should build up and give grace, not tear down.

We also gently encourage you to guard your own heart in this trial. It is easy to let hurt turn into bitterness or dishonor in return, but God calls us to put away bitterness and to be kind and forgiving. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, Eph 4:31-32. Honoring your mother as an adult does not mean you must remain as a five year old under her control, for when we are grown God intends for us to live as responsible adults while still showing respect. Speaking the truth in love, Eph 4:15, can help you set respectful boundaries. We encourage you to pray for wisdom and then, in a calm moment, gently share with her how her constant orders and yelling make you feel, asking if you can relate to one another with more mutual respect and kindness, and to continue to respond with gentleness even when she yells, trusting God to work in her heart.

We pray together for you and for your mother.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus and lift up this dear child of Yours and this mother to Your throne of grace. Lord, You see every harsh word, every order, every moment of disparagement and yelling, and You see the hurt it causes. We ask You to soften this mother's heart, to open her eyes to see her child as the adult You have made, and to replace disparaging and controlling speech with words that build up and give grace. Help her to speak with gentleness and love and to show appreciation and praise. Lord, help this dear one to honor his mother even while living as an adult, to forgive as You have forgiven, to not harbor bitterness, and to respond with a gentle answer that can turn away wrath. Grant both of them peace in their home, healing in their relationship, and a new pattern of kindness, tenderheartedness, and respect. Give wisdom for healthy boundaries and for communication that honors You. We trust You to restore what has been strained and to let Your love rule in this family. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We hear how wearing this has been for you. To be well into adulthood and still be ordered around, corrected over small things, and spoken to mostly through yelling would leave anyone feeling small and unseen. It makes sense you long for kindness and simple appreciation.

We think about respect as simply treating each other as people of worth and dignity, and boundaries as the quiet lines that let us know where one person's responsibility ends and another's begins. They do not push love away, they actually protect it, so you can stay connected to your mother while still owning your own choices, time and decisions as an adult. When those lines are unclear, even love can feel like control.

One thing that sometimes helps is to start very small and calm. Choose one recurring moment, like directions while driving or comments about daily tasks, and decide ahead of time on a brief, steady response you can use when things are calm, not in the middle of being scolded. For example, calmly saying what you will do and thanking her for her concern, then following through. If conversations regularly become yelling, it is also okay to step away briefly and return when both of you can speak more quietly.

Father, we lift them to You in Jesus name. Bring peace into this home, soften words on both sides, and give wisdom to know how to love and honor while also living as the adult You created them to be. Guard their heart from discouragement and help them feel seen and valued by You today. Amen.

Your burden has been heard and carried before the throne of grace, and we have prayed for you in Jesus mighty name as you asked.

There is a peculiar tenderness in the bond between mother and child which Scripture itself honors, saying, My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother. The affection of a mother is among the most tender cords that bind the heart, and for that reason the Lord has placed a solemn charge upon children to honor father and mother, that it may be well with them. Even when you are grown and no longer five years old but an adult over many years, that command does not cease, though the manner of obedience changes with maturity. To honor is not to remain a child, but to show reverence, to speak with gentleness, and not to grieve those who gave you life.

We hear also the pain in your words, that you are disparaged and ordered and scolded over little things, that praise and kindly speech seem withheld and yelling takes their place. The Word of God speaks to parents as well, that they provoke not their children to wrath, and that love should speak with kindness. A mother's words ought to be seasoned with grace, and when they are harsh the heart of a child is wounded indeed. The Lord sees this and He is compassionate toward both.

We would counsel you to seek by prayer and by a soft answer that which may bring peace. A soft answer turneth away wrath. Go to the Lord first and ask Him to give you patience, meekness, and strength to respond without bitterness, and to give your mother a gentle and quiet spirit. Then, when there is a calm hour, speak to her with all respect and honor, telling her plainly yet lovingly how her constant orders and scolding weigh upon you, and how a kind word would refresh your soul. Show her the honor you owe her as your mother, while also letting her understand that you are now an adult answerable before God for your own way, and that you desire to walk in love together rather than in strife.

Let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, in Jesus mighty name we come before Thee on behalf of this Thy child who is grieved by harsh words and constant control. Thou knowest the sorrow of being disparaged and never praised, of being ordered as a child though grown to adulthood. Have mercy and look upon this home. Work in the heart of this mother, that she may put away yelling and scolding over trifles, and speak with kindness and appreciation as becometh love. Teach her to trust Thee with her adult child and to show the tender affection which Thou hast placed in a mother's heart. Work also in this dear one who has asked for prayer, giving grace to honor mother according to Thy command, to forgive as Christ forgave, to answer with gentleness, and to bear this trial with patience. Let Thy peace rule in that house, and let both be drawn nearer to the Lord Jesus Christ, in whom alone is salvation and true change of heart. Grant that this trial may be turned to good, and that out of it may come a renewed love and respect between mother and child. We ask this in Jesus mighty name, Amen.

Cast thy burden upon the Lord and He shall sustain thee. Continue in prayer, continue in honor, and trust the Lord to work in due season.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your heartfelt request has been heard and we join you in bringing it before the Lord. It is painful to feel constantly corrected and controlled as if you were still a small child, to be scolded over little things and to rarely hear a kind word or any appreciation. It is also painful to feel spoken to with yelling rather than gentleness, and God sees this sorrow.

Scripture calls children to honor father and mother, and this honor does not end when we become adults. At the same time Scripture calls parents not to provoke their children and to speak with grace. When you are an adult, the relationship changes. As it is written, a person leaves father and mother and is joined to his own household, and even when living near family, an adult son or daughter is to be treated with the dignity of an adult. Your desire to be spoken to respectfully and to be trusted to make adult decisions is right and good.

We encourage you to respond in a way that honors Christ even while you seek healthier patterns. Do not return yelling for yelling, for a gentle answer turns away wrath. In a calm moment, not in the heat of an argument, share honestly and respectfully how her words affect you. You might say where you feel hurt and what you need, rather than only what she does wrong. For example, explain that when you are given constant orders about where to go or which way to turn, you feel not trusted as an adult, and ask if you can agree together on how to communicate with more kindness and appreciation. Set clear and respectful boundaries about decisions that are yours to make as an adult, while still showing honor in your tone and actions. If possible, seek counsel from a mature pastor or trusted believer who can walk with both of you and help mediate.

Let us pray together in Jesus mighty name.

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this dear one and his mother to You. Lord, You know the hurt caused by disparaging words, constant control, and scolding over small things. We ask that You soften this mother's heart, that she would stop yelling and instead speak with kindness, encouragement and appreciation. Help her to see her child as an adult whom You have entrusted with responsibility, and to offer guidance with gentleness rather than restriction and harshness. Grant to this son or daughter patience, strength, and grace to honor his mother without dishonoring You, to speak truth in love, and to forgive as You have forgiven us. Fill this home with peace, with mutual respect, and with words that build up rather than tear down. Lead them both toward maturity in Christ and toward a relationship marked by love and understanding. We ask this in Jesus mighty name, Amen.

Continue to seek the Lord daily, remain steadfast in prayer and in the Word, and trust that He who endured hardship and shame for our sake is able to bring healing and joy even through seasons of travail and sorrow.
