My mother

Antitypogeo

Beloved of All
My mother is very difficult person. She has pride she thinks her parents are those she needs to pray and she is bothering me every day and call me on phone then speaking for one hour. I have to listen...I am too kind and listen but it is too much. Jesus stop that forever.

We hear your weariness and frustration in this situation with your mother, and we join with you in bringing this before the Lord in Jesus' name. We understand how draining it can feel to listen for an hour each day when you are trying to be kind and honoring, and we also hear your concern about her pride and where she places her trust in prayer.

God calls us to honor our father and mother, even when it is difficult. Exodus 20:12 says Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. And Ephesians 6:2-3 reminds us Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, that it may be well with you, and you may live long on the earth. This honoring does not mean we must endure without healthy and loving boundaries, but it does mean we are to respond with respect, patience and love. Ephesians 4:2 calls us with all lowliness and humility, with patience, bearing with one another in love.

We also want to gently address what you shared about your mother thinking her parents are those she needs to pray to. We must lovingly rebuke this, because prayer is to be directed only to God our Father through Jesus Christ. There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, as it says in 1 Timothy 2:5. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Matthew 6:9 Jesus taught us to pray, Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. To pray to departed parents or ancestors is not biblical and does not honor God, and Scripture warns against seeking the dead on behalf of the living. We should pray for your mother that her eyes would be opened to this truth and that her pride would be softened. Proverbs 16:18 warns that Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall, but James 4:6 gives hope that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.

Your kindness in listening is a beautiful reflection of Christ, and Galatians 6:2 tells us to Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. At the same time, love also speaks the truth gently and sets wise boundaries. Proverbs 15:1 says A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. It is not unkind or dishonoring to lovingly share with your mother that you love her and want to honor her, but that you have limited time and energy each day. We encourage you to pray for wisdom about how to communicate this with grace, perhaps by agreeing together on a shorter, regular time to talk, or by gently letting her know when you need to close a call, always affirming your love and your prayers for her.

We join together in prayer for you and your mother.

We pray, Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we lift up this dear child and their mother to You. Lord, soften this mother's heart, humble her pride, and reveal to her that You alone are worthy of our prayers and worship. Draw her to Yourself through Jesus, the only mediator, and help her to place her trust fully in You. Give her peace and deliver her from any deception about praying to her parents. Father, we also pray for Your child who is weary. Grant them Your grace, patience, strength and wisdom. Help them to honor their mother with love and respect while also setting healthy boundaries that are pleasing to You. Teach them how to speak the truth in love with a gentle answer, and fill them with Your compassion and perseverance. Colossians 3:12-13 calls us to put on a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance, bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, even as Christ forgave us. Help them to forgive any hurt and to love as You love. We ask that You bring peace into this relationship, restore healthy communication, and let Your will be done in both of their lives. We thank You that we can come to You only through Jesus, and we trust You to work in this situation for Your glory. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We hear how worn down you are by those daily hour-long calls. Wanting to be kind and also feeling trapped and exhausted at the same time is a heavy place to be, and it makes sense you would ask Jesus for relief.

Being kind does not mean you have to make your time and energy available without limit. A healthy boundary is like a property line, it helps you know what is yours to carry and what is not, and it actually keeps freedom in a relationship instead of building resentment. Learning to let your yes be yes and your no be no can be part of loving both your mother and yourself well.

One small step that helps many people in this kind of pattern is to decide ahead of time what you can offer, and then say it kindly at the start of the call. For example, you might choose how many days a week you will answer and how long you can talk that day, maybe 15 or 20 minutes, and let her know gently up front: "I can talk until [time], then I need to go." Have a simple closing line ready so you do not have to find words in the moment, and try to keep it consistent. Feelings of guilt often come with this at first, that does not mean you are doing something wrong.

We are praying for you and for your mother.

Father, we lift this weary heart to You and ask for wisdom and peace in this relationship. Give our friend courage to speak truth in love and to rest without guilt, and give his mother comfort and a growing trust in You. Guide their conversations and bring more calm to their days. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your words reveal a heavy burden, and it is right that you have brought this sorrow before the Lord rather than bearing it alone. To feel wearied by long and frequent calls, and to find a parent difficult and proud, is a trial that many know, and the Lord sees both your kindness in listening and the strain you feel.

Scripture lays upon us a tender and abiding duty. It says, My son, keep your father's commandment, and forsake not the law of your mother. There is no more tender bond that can bind us than the affection of a mother, and though that bond may be strained, we are not free to cast it aside. In the days of our Lord, some taught that a man could say Corban and be free from all obligation to help father or mother, and thus they set aside the commandment of God for the commandments of men. We must not follow that path. I have known sorrowful sights in ministry when children have in spirit wished their parents away, and I must charge you as I would charge my own hearers, do not in your heart wish to kill the parents who gave you life by desiring that they be cut off forever. Such a prayer, to ask Jesus to stop your mother forever, is not according to His will.

Your mother also needs your prayers in another way. You say she thinks her parents are those she needs to pray to. We must pray only to the living God through Jesus Christ alone, for there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. To pray to those who have gone before, even to beloved parents, is to turn from the Truth. Let your prayer for her be that she may know the Truth herself, that the sincerity and affection you owe her may become a bridge to tell her of the Saviour who alone hears and answers prayer. Grace does not run in the blood, but it often runs side by side with it, and the faithful prayers of children have often been the means of a parent's awakening.

Kindness is a Christian virtue, but kindness must be joined with wisdom and truth. To listen for an hour each day out of mere feeling that you must, until resentment grows, helps neither you nor her. It is lawful and loving to set a gentle boundary. You may answer the call with honour, speak the truth in love, and say with meekness that you have a limited time to speak, and then keep that limit with consistency. Honour does not require that you have no limits, it requires that within those limits you are respectful, patient, and truthful. If she is proud or difficult, answer not with pride in return, but with the patience that you would desire from Christ for yourself.

Let us pray not that God would remove your mother, but that He would renew you both. May the Lord give you strength to honour your mother even when it is hard, grace to bear with her infirmities, and wisdom to guide your conversations with firm and loving boundaries. May He open your mother's eyes to see that prayer belongs to God alone through Jesus Christ, and bring her to humble faith in Him. May He guard your heart from bitterness, and teach you to love as Christ has loved you, with both tenderness and holiness.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
