My dying sister, please take her home

We hear the deep ache and love in your heart for your sister and we join with you in lifting her up before our Heavenly Father. To watch someone you love grow so tired and weary as she nears the end of her earthly journey is heartbreaking and we grieve with you in this valley.

The Lord sees her tiredness and He sees your sorrow. He is close to those who are suffering. The psalmist reminds us that Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit Psalm 34:18. Jesus Himself invites the weary to come to Him, for He says Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest Matthew 11:28. We cling to the promise that for those who belong to Christ, to be absent from the body is to be at home with the Lord 2 Corinthians 5:8, and that one day He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more, neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain any more Revelation 21:4.

We understand your prayer asking the Lord to take her home, and your desire is for her suffering to end and for her to have peace. We gently remind you that our times are in His hands Psalm 31:15 and that there is a season and a time for every purpose under heaven, a time to be born and a time to die Ecclesiastes 3:1-2. Precious in Yahweh's sight is the death of his saints Psalm 116:15. It is right and merciful to ask our Father for His mercy, for His peace to rest upon her, for relief from pain and for His perfect will to be done, trusting that His timing is perfect and His love for her is even greater than yours. We do not hasten death by our own hand, but we entrust her life fully to the One who numbers our days Job 14:5 and who gives power to the weak and to him who has no might He increases strength Isaiah 40:29.

We also notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to God. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised him from the dead, we will be saved Romans 10:9. So we pray in His name and we long for your sister, and for you, to know the assurance of sins forgiven and eternal life through faith in Him. If she has trusted in Jesus, her homecoming will be glorious. If you are unsure of her faith, we encourage you to pray with her, read scripture over her, play hymns of comfort, and speak the name of Jesus over her, that she may have peace in Him.

We pray together now for you both.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up this precious sister to You. You know her body, her tiredness, every breath she takes. We ask for Your mercy and Your peace to surround her. Ease her pain, calm her spirit, and let her feel Your presence near. If it is Your will to call her home, we ask that You take her gently into Your arms where there is no more suffering. We pray that she knows Jesus as her Savior and Lord, that she has the hope of eternal life, and that she will hear Your welcome. Lord, we also lift up her loved one who is carrying this burden. Comfort this weary heart, give strength for each moment, and let Your peace which surpasses all understanding guard heart and mind in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7. Help us to trust Your perfect will and Your perfect timing, knowing that You do all things in love. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and our only hope. Amen.

We encourage you to remain by her side as you are able, to hold her hand, to speak softly of God's love, to read aloud Psalm 23 and John 14, and to allow others to support you as well. The Lord is your shepherd even in this valley Psalm 23:4, and He will carry you both. We are continuing to pray with you for God's comfort, for His will to be done, and for peace until you see her again in His presence.

We are so sorry you are walking through this. Watching your sister be so tired and feeling helpless to ease it is exhausting in a way few understand, and it makes sense that your heart is asking the Lord to gently take her home and give her rest.

There is no single right way to feel in these days. Some moments you may feel deep sorrow, other moments numbness or even relief for wanting her suffering to end, and then guilt for feeling that relief. All of that can live together when you love someone through the end of life. You do not have to carry it alone. Having one trusted person nearby, a family member, friend, pastor or hospice support person who can simply sit with you, listen and share the watch can make the burden a little lighter.

If you are able, give yourself permission to rest in small ways between times at her side, to eat, to step out for air, and to let others help with practical needs.

Father, we bring this sister before You and we bring her sibling who loves her so dearly. You see her weariness and You see this ache of waiting. We ask for Your nearness and gentle comfort over her, for peace in the room, and for strength and steadiness for the family keeping vigil. Hold them both in Your mercy in these hours. In Jesus' name, amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect, comfort and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Your words have moved my heart deeply, and I hear in them both great love and great weariness on behalf of one so dear to you. To watch a beloved sister grow tired unto death is a bitter sorrow, and yet for the believer it is sorrow not without hope.

Take comfort in this, that the saints in Heaven though apparently separate from us are in reality one with us. The family in Heaven and earth are one, born of the same Father and partakers in the same Divine love. The Lord knows them that are His, not merely those in Heaven but those below. Your sister, if she is in Christ, is already of that one family, and though she lingers yet a little while on this side, she is not far from home. There is no such gulf between earth and Heaven as gloomy thoughts suggest, for Heaven must be in us before we can be in Heaven.

We read, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. This is the word of the Lord to you in this affliction. May the Lord comfort your heart and establish you, for He has loved you with an everlasting love. Your comfort in affliction is this, that His Word has quickened you. It tells you of a city that has foundations, and assures you that if you are strangers upon earth you are also citizens of Heaven.

What is the Heaven to which you long to see her go. It is the chief blessing of Heaven, the cream of Heaven, that the saints shall there see Jesus. Christ is all in all to us here, and therefore we long for a Heaven in which He shall be all in all to us forever. There they hunger no more, neither thirst any more, and the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters, and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes. To be tired here is to be made ready to rest there, to rest in Him who said, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

It is right and tender for you to place her in the Father's hands and to pray, Father, do with her as seemeth good in Thy sight. We may not hasten His timing, for His timing is perfect and His love is wiser than our longing, but we may with holy confidence ask that He would deal gently with His tired child, that He would give her peace in her suffering, that He would let His presence be her Heaven below till He calls her to her Heaven above, and that He would sustain you as you watch and wait.

May the Spirit of God grant to her, if it be His will to keep her yet a little while, quiet patience and a clear view of King Jesus and the glory which follows upon His sacrificial grief. And may He grant to you grace to sit together as it were in the heavenlies even now, comforted by the sweet reflection that you are journeying to that goodly land where you shall be reunited never to part. If we cannot go to Heaven at once, Heaven can come to us, and Christ can make even this valley of tears bright with His fellowship.

I will entreat the Lord with you, that He will lay His hand upon your dear sister in mercy, that He will take away all fear, that He will wash her in the blood of the Lamb and present her faultless before His presence, and that in His own good hour He will receive her unto Himself. And I pray that He will comfort your heart, establish you in every good word and work, and let you feel that the everlasting arms are underneath both her and you.

The Lord bless thee and keep thee, and give thee to know that whether in Heaven or earth, all His own are one family in Christ Jesus, and none shall be lost out of His hand.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your prayer for your sister has been heard, and the love and weariness in your words are clear. To watch someone you love be so tired, and to long for her to be at rest, is a heavy sorrow, and God sees both her suffering and yours.

Scripture speaks of death for those who belong to Christ not as an end but as a departure, a going home to the Lord who has loved His own unto the end. He knew His own hour, and He knows hers. That love does not fail when strength fails, and He does not abandon His own in their weakness. Even now He is near to her, and near to you as you keep watch in love.

In this mortal life no one is exempt from sorrow, and the pain of seeing a loved one suffer is among the deepest. Yet sorrow itself, when placed before God, can become a path to deeper trust. He does not despise tears, and He gives comfort that remains even in grief. His long suffering and mercy are not distant, but present, to sustain, to ease, and to carry.

I will pray with you, entrusting your sister to the Lord's wisdom and mercy rather than to our own timing.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, through whom alone is salvation and life, have mercy on this dear sister in her weariness. Lay Your hand upon her, ease her suffering, quiet her fears, and let her feel Your presence and love. Forgive her sins and hold her in Your grace. If it is Your will, grant her peaceful rest and in Your perfect time receive her to Yourself, where there is no more pain or weariness. Comfort her family who loves her so deeply, give them strength for each hour, and keep them in hope that is not put to shame. Let Your will be done, for Your will is good and full of love. Amen.

Continue to sit with her, speak gently to her, and commend her again and again into the hands of Christ. He loves her more than you do, and He will do what is right and merciful. May He give you peace as you wait on Him.
