Good and Faithful Servant
My mother is severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed and several people including myself have noticed that there seems to be a demonic element to her negative behavior. She is a professing Christian but believes in some very wrong things. Please pray about this. The enemy often uses her negatively in the lives of people around her. I am concerned her situation may also be the case for others in my life as well. Please pray. Thank you.

We join with you in lifting up your mother and your concern for others around you before the throne of grace, and we thank you for sharing this heavy burden with us.

We hear the distress in your words as you describe your mother as severely emotionally and behaviorally disturbed, and we do not take lightly your discernment that there may be a demonic element at work. Scripture tells us that our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places Ephesians 6:12. The enemy prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour 1 Peter 5:8, and he often seeks to use those closest to us to bring confusion, division, and pain.

We also hear that your mother is a professing Christian yet believes some very wrong things. We must lovingly speak the truth that we are to test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world 1 John 4:1. There will be a time when people will not endure sound doctrine, but will heap to themselves teachers after their own lusts 2 Timothy 4:3, and holding to wrong beliefs can open a door to deception and give the enemy a foothold. We pray that any false teaching or unbiblical belief she holds will be exposed by the light of the Word, for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds, throwing down imaginations and every high thing that is exalted against the knowledge of God 2 Corinthians 10:4-5.

We want to gently point out that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved and delivered. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. Any prayer for deliverance, for a sound mind, and for freedom from demonic influence must be made in the mighty name of Jesus, for at His name every knee must bow and every evil spirit must flee. We encourage you to always come boldly before God in Jesus name, trusting in His finished work on the cross and His resurrection power.

We also want to encourage you with the balance of honoring your mother while guarding your heart. God commands us to honor your father and your mother Exodus 20:12, and this remains even when a parent is difficult, but honoring does not mean we must subject ourselves to ongoing spiritual or emotional harm without wise boundaries. We are to submit ourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you James 4:7. We can love her, pray fervently for her, and speak truth while also seeking godly counsel and protection for ourselves and others she may be influencing.

We pray together now for you and for your mother.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and we lift up this dear mother to You. Lord, You know her heart, her mind, and the struggles that torment her. We ask that You shine Your light into every dark place and expose every lie, every false belief, and every influence of the enemy. We rebuke in Jesus name every demonic assignment against her and against this family, and we ask that You break every chain and stronghold that has held her in emotional and behavioral disturbance. Grant her a sound mind, for You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control 2 Timothy 1:7. Renew her mind through Your Word that she may be transformed and prove what is Your good, well-pleasing, and perfect will Romans 12:2. Draw her into true repentance and into a deeper, obedient walk with Christ, that she may love Your truth and reject what is false. Protect the one who submitted this request and all those around her from the enemy's schemes, cover them with the armor of God, and give them wisdom, discernment, and strength to stand firm, to love well, and to set healthy boundaries that honor You. Lead this family to faithful pastors and mature believers who can provide in-person prayer, discipleship, and wise Christian counsel, and if there are medical or mental health needs, guide them to godly and competent help. We ask for Your peace to guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7. We trust that He who is in us is greater than he who is in the world 1 John 4:4, and we claim victory through the blood of the Lamb. In the powerful and only saving name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue steadfast in prayer and fasting as the Lord leads, to remain in the Word daily, to put on the whole armor of God Ephesians 6:11, and to not face this alone. Seek your local church elders to pray over your mother and over you, for the prayer of faith will heal and deliver. Keep loving your mother with truth and grace, speak the Word gently to her when she will receive it, and trust that God is able to deliver and restore even the most disturbed heart.

We hear how heavy this has been to carry, loving your mother while also feeling concerned and at times hurt by her behavior, and wondering how to pray when you sense something deeper going on spiritually.

It is a lot to hold alone, especially when you see her choices affecting others around her. You are right to bring this to the Lord and to ask for wisdom beyond your own perspective. These situations are often layered, with spiritual, emotional and relational factors woven together, and it is hard to sort that out by yourself.

One steady next step that helps many in your place is to invite one or two trusted, grounded people in person into the discernment with you, a mature pastor and, if her behavior is severely unstable, a Christian counselor or medical professional who shares your faith. Talking through specific patterns with them can give you clearer perspective, help you set loving boundaries, and keep you from feeling you have to figure out or fix this on your own. You can love her and pray for her without being available for every harmful interaction.

We are praying with you.

Father, we lift this mother to You and ask for Your mercy and truth to surround her. Give her child wisdom, protection and peace as they seek to love well, and lead them to the right support nearby. Guard this family from the enemy's work and draw each heart closer to Jesus. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your burden for your mother has been heard and we join you in bringing it before the throne of grace. To watch one so near to you be so troubled in mind and conduct, and to feel the enemy working through that trouble to wound others, is a heavy affliction, and we do not take it lightly that you have asked for prayer.

We are reminded that deliverance is of the Lord and must be accomplished by His own hand. He alone has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son, and deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin. No wisdom of man and no strength of our own can effect it. Where we look for justification, there must we also look for sanctification, for as we are justified through Jesus Christ, we must also expect to receive all true change from a heavenly source. The ransom for sinners is not devised by man, but found by God Himself, for He has found a ransom in the blood of His own Son.

We also remember that the more you know of God's attributes, the more you understand of His acts, the more you treasure up His promises and dive into the depths of His covenant, the more difficult it will become for Satan to tempt you to despondency and despair. The arrow of the Lord's deliverance is often shot when we are most cast down, and He who makes deliverance effectual will in His time bring His people forth.

Let us pray together.

O heavenly Father, we come in the name of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who alone is salvation, and through whose blood alone there is ransom from the pit. Look in tender pity upon this mother and upon this family. Thou knowest her disturbance of mind and behavior, Thou seest where error has taken hold and where the enemy would use her to bring harm to others. We ask that Thou wouldst deliver her from the power of darkness, from every influence of the evil one, and from every wrong belief that is contrary to Thy Word. Bring her into the light of Thy truth, grant her a sound mind, a renewed heart, and faith that rests in Christ alone. Let Thy free grace do what no human hand can do.

We pray also for this dear child who intercedes for her, and for all others in the household who feel this wound. Keep them from despair, guard their hearts, give them wisdom to walk in love and truth, to speak with grace and firmness, and to keep close to Thy promises. Help them to declare the works of the Lord even through this trial, and to trust that Thou hearest the cry of those that fear Thee. Provide godly counsel and help from faithful pastors and believers near them, and let Thy peace rule where there has been turmoil.

We ask this not because we are worthy, but because Thou hast promised that they that trust in the Lord shall not be put to shame, and because Thou hast found a ransom. Hear us for Jesus sake. Amen.

Continue to seek the Lord in His Word daily, to pray for your mother by name, and to walk in the light of the gospel. If you are able, seek the help of a faithful pastor who can know you and counsel you personally and help to discern what spiritual and practical help is most needed. The Lord pities them that fear Him as a father pities his children, and He will not despise the prayer of the sorrowful. May He keep you and make His deliverance known in His good time.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
