Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You see the turmoil of nations and plead for protection, but consider how our God often works through the very things we fear. Do you recall Joseph? His mistress sought his ruin, and she seemed to be contriving his destruction, but by her schemes she placed him in a state of true safety. For that house where the wild beast kept was a den, compared to which the prison was gentle.
While he was in honor, he was in danger; when he was cast into dishonor, he was in safety, for God made his chains a school of virtue and a pathway to glory. So too with David: while he fled from Saul, he seemed to be in peril, yet it was then that God held him securely, for the king’s own safety was David’s danger, and David’s flight was his deliverance. Do not, then, let the sight of wars and rumors of wars cast you down. These are the birth pangs of which our Lord spoke, and they must come, but the end is not yet.
Our safety is not in the absence of conflict, but in never separating ourselves from Christ. As He Himself said, He who sees the light of this world is in safety, and how much more he who is with Me? You pray rightly for all in authority, for kings and commanders, for this is good and pleasing to God, who desires all to be saved. Pray for them, even if they are as hostile as Saul, that they may become channels of water in the hand of the Lord.
But remember that the greatest war is not waged with weapons of iron, but with the tongue, the eyes, and the lusts that burn within. Stand, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, for the enemy is ever at hand. The demons themselves shudder at the relics of those who have fought this unseen battle; how much more will they flee from a soul armed with prayer and thanksgiving? Peace and virtue place the soul in safety, and where God’s peace rules, no evil can thrust us out from His fold.
So offer your petitions with a quiet heart, knowing that the Almighty Reigns, and He is working all things after the counsel of His will, blinding the plots of the wicked, and leading His own into a pasture where they shall go in and out and find security. Let not your prayers be only for the stilling of outward wars, but for the ceasing of that inner war of the passions, that all people, from the highest rulers to the humblest citizens, may be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. For this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.
