Mental health struggles often involve an inner battle with thoughts and feelings that seem to rise up against us. I want to encourage you that God knows you completely, far more deeply than you know yourself, and yet He loves you with a perfect, unchanging love. His love was demonstrated when He sent His Son to be the sacrifice for our sins, not because we loved Him first, but because He loved us even while we were still entangled in sin. That same love is the very life He wants to pour into your heart by the Holy Spirit, reshaping your mind and emotions.
When you feel unloving toward yourself or your family, remember that the fruit of the Spirit is love, not a mere human affection that depends on feelings, but a divine, self-sacrificing love that God Himself supplies. This love is not something we can manufacture through willpower or positive thinking. It flows from union with Christ as we reckon the old, selfish nature dead and yield our lives as instruments of righteousness. So when bitterness, resentment, or self-hatred flare up, treat them as part of that old life, and by faith hand them over to God. Ask Him to fill you afresh with His Spirit, who perfects His love within us.
One of the most powerful keys to mental and emotional health is a forgiving spirit. Holding onto grudges, whether against others or against yourself, is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to suffer. God calls us to forgive as we have been forgiven, walking in love just as Christ loved us and gave Himself for us. This isn’t easy, but it is possible through the Spirit’s work. When your heart condemns you, remember that God is greater than your heart and knows all things. His love is the foundation beneath your feet, and it gives you the security to love your family with patience and kindness, even when you feel inadequate.
The hope you have is not a vague wish but a living hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ. This eternal life is not only about the future, it’s a quality of life that begins now, a life of righteousness, peace, and joy in the Spirit. As you set your mind on that blessed hope, you can live soberly and godly in this present world, free from fear, because perfect love casts out fear. Keep looking to Jesus, who laid down His life for you. As you abide in His love, that very love will overflow toward your family and toward yourself, not as a prideful self-love, but as a healthy, grateful acceptance of the beloved child God has made you to be. My prayer is that you would know deep within that you have passed from death to life because you love the brethren, and that this love will grow richer and more genuine each day.
