Medication and pain

Thank you for sharing this request and for asking in the name of Jesus. We are praying with you for your son and for you, and we are bringing both needs before the Lord together.

Scripture shows us how deeply God cares about our infirmities. Matthew points us to Isaiah chapter 53 verse 4, surely he has borne our griefs, and the word there can be translated infirmities, and applies it to Jesus healing the sick. We see that same compassion when Jesus cleansed the leper, healed the centurion's servant from a distance with only a word, lifted Peter's mother in law from her fever, and in the evening healed many who were brought to him who were sick and oppressed. He has power in the material realm and in the spiritual realm, and he is worthy of our worship, for the worship given to him is worship that belongs to God alone.

We believe strongly in healing, and we also recognize that healing comes in many ways. Sometimes Jesus healed instantly with a touch, sometimes with only a word, sometimes by going to the person, sometimes by telling them to go home and find it done. There is even one record of a gradual healing. And much healing comes through the natural processes God himself established within our bodies. Any healing process is divine in that sense, because God created nature and the processes of nature. Medication, when it is available and works as it should, can be part of God's gracious provision for our bodies, just as God made provision in his law for the leper in the day of his cleansing, leaving room for himself to do a work that is contrary to nature if he so desired. We do not put God in a box, but we give him allowance to work as he wills, whether instantly, gradually, or through ordinary means.

At the same time, there is much about healing we do not understand. We do not fully know why some are healed quickly and others are not, at least not in this life. To presume that God wills the same kind of healing in every case and in our timing is not scriptural. Even Paul prayed three times concerning his thorn in the flesh and learned that God's answer was different than removal. That does not keep us from praying with faith. Like the woman who touched the hem of his garment and released her faith to receive from him, we come honestly and expectantly to Jesus.

We also know that pain and sickness are part of living in a fallen world. If it were not for sin entering the world through Adam, there would be no pain and no death, and it would be a perfect world. Not every sickness is a direct result of a person's sin, good people suffer and good people die from illnesses, but all suffering is indirectly the result of living in a corrupted creation. God knows that pain, and he has made the ultimate provision for our sin through Jesus, and he hears us as we groan in these bodies, longing to be delivered from weakness and suffering.

So we pray for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus we ask that you would provide for this son and that his medication would be filled on time with no delay or hindrance. We ask that you would oversee every detail of that provision. And we ask for this dear parent, that you would ease pain today, bring relief, and bring healing according to your wisdom and mercy. Whether through a gradual process, through the help of treatment, or by your direct touch, we ask for your healing hand and your peace. We trust you as the one who bore our infirmities and who has power to help, and we worship you as we ask these things in Jesus name, amen.
