There is no sweeter word for a weary soul than this which you have brought before us, Come to Me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Our Lord speaks of two rests, and both are to be found in Him alone. The first is a rest from the burden. The soul that comes to Christ by faith, trusting in Him alone for salvation, finds that the great burden of sin is lifted, for He Himself bore it in His own body on the tree. You cannot bear that burden yourself, it would crush you beyond all hope, but He gives rest from it when you come to Him empty handed and believe on Him.
Then there is a second rest, a rest in service. When you have been relieved of the old burden you are not left idle. The Lord says, Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me. At first this seems strange, that one who was heavy laden should be called to take another yoke, yet His yoke is easy and His burden is light. It is a yoke for activity and a burden for endurance, but it is a blessed yoke, for it is His. He who is a Christian will not find rest in being idle, but in loving service to his Master. In this service he does rest, like a bird that sleeps upon the wing. It is rest to labor for the Lord Jesus.
This rest is to be found only in the Lord Himself. The text does not say rest in something about the Lord, but rest in the Lord. We who have believed do enter into rest even now, and there remains a perfect rest for the people of God hereafter, when toil and Monday mornings shall be no more. Trust and you shall rest. Rest in His mercy which blots out sin, rest in His power which keeps you, rest in His love which will never let you go.
If you are laboring and heavy laden today, hear His invitation and come at once to Him. Do not look to another. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and rest is in Him alone. Come just as you are, confess your sin, and take His yoke upon you in humble obedience, learning of Him who is meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest unto your souls.
We will bear your burden in prayer before the throne of grace, asking our gracious Lord to give you that inward rest which the world cannot give, to teach you to bear His easy yoke, and to bring you at last to that perfect rest which remains for all who are in Christ.
May the Holy Spirit bless this word to your heart, and may you find in Christ both rest from sin and rest in His service, till you enter into His eternal rest.
