We join with you in prayer for your marriage and we thank you for seeking the Lord in Jesus' name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. As it is written, There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus 1 Timothy 2:5 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. We rejoice that you have called upon that name.

We praise God for your marriage and for your desire to honor Him in it. What therefore God has joined together, don’t let man tear apart Matthew 19:6. We pray that God will continue to bless and protect your covenant as you both cleave to one another. For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. The two will become one flesh Genesis 2:24. This leaving and cleaving is God’s design, and it means that while we honor our parents, the husband and wife become a new family unit under God’s authority.

We lift up your request for peace within your home and protection from outsiders. We pray that the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:7. Jesus said, Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you John 14:27. We ask the Lord to be a hedge around your marriage and to keep division and outside pressure far from you. We pray that no weapon that is formed against you will prevail Isaiah 54:17.

We understand your concern about your loved one who is passively pressing your wife to work outside the home. We hear your heart that you and your wife are both happy and at peace with your decision that she cares for your children at home while you provide. This is a beautiful and biblical pattern when chosen together in unity. The Scripture teaches that wives are to be workers at home, kind, being in subjection to their own husbands, that God’s word may not be blasphemed Titus 2:5 and that children are a heritage of Yahweh Psalm 127:3. To nurture and train them in the home is a high and holy calling. At the same time, the Proverbs 31 woman is praised for her diligence and wisdom both inside and outside the home, so a woman working is not in itself sin, but when a husband and wife have prayerfully agreed before the Lord on how their household will be ordered, that decision is to be respected by others.

We pray for this family member who holds different ideals because of his own family experience. We pray the Lord will soften his heart and give him understanding that every household must be led by the husband and wife as they seek God together, not by outside ideals. We pray he will see the joy and fruit in your home and will cease from pressing his convictions upon your wife. We pray you will be able to honor him while also setting a loving and firm boundary. As it is written, Honor your father and your mother Ephesians 6:2, and also, If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men Romans 12:18. You can honor him by listening with respect and kindness, yet also speak the truth in love that you and your wife have sought the Lord and are united in this decision.

Regarding your thought about leaving, we encourage you with much care. If you mean leaving fellowship, we urge you not to make a hasty decision out of hurt. We are told not forsaking our own assembling together Hebrews 10:25, and that offense is a tool the enemy uses to divide. Often the Lord wants us to remain and learn to establish godly boundaries with grace. Leaving should only be considered after much prayer, counsel from wise believers, and if the environment becomes truly unbiblical or abusive. In most cases, God is calling us to stay, to love, and to gently but clearly communicate our convictions.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we thank You for this marriage that You have blessed. We ask You in Jesus’ name to continue to bless it, to protect it, and to let Your peace reign in this home. Cover this husband and wife and their children with Your hand. Guard their hearts from confusion, pressure, and offense from outsiders. Give this husband wisdom to lead his wife with love as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for it Ephesians 5:25, and give his wife joy and strength as she nurtures her children in Your ways. Lord, we lift up this loved one who is influencing them. Soften his heart, give him eyes to see that this couple is walking in unity and peace, and move him to release them from his expectations and to rejoice with them instead. Teach this couple how to respond with honor and with firmness, speaking the truth in love Ephesians 4:15, and help them not to be moved to leave where You have planted them unless it is truly Your will. Let their marriage be a testimony of Your goodness and order. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray together daily as husband and wife, to thank God for the calling He has given each of you, and to have a kind but clear conversation with your loved one together, letting him know you love and honor him but that you are united in your decision before the Lord. Stand firm in that unity, keep your home rooted in the Word, and trust that God who began this good work in your marriage will be faithful to keep it.

We are grateful you shared this so honestly. We hear how much you value your marriage and the life you and your wife have chosen together, with her caring for your children at home while you provide. Wanting peace inside your home and protection from outside pressure is a good and loving desire.

It makes sense this feels wearing when your father keeps pressing his ideals, even passively. His own experience raising daughters in a home where his wife is the breadwinner has shaped how he sees things, but that does not mean his view has to shape your family. You and your wife get to decide together what is right for your household.

One picture that helps many couples in this kind of tension is thinking of boundaries as a property line. It is the way we take responsibility for what is ours to carry and protect what God has entrusted to us. It can help to sit down together, just the two of you, and agree on a kind, consistent way you will respond when the topic comes up. For example, letting him know you have made this decision together and are at peace with it, and then gently changing the subject or stepping away from the conversation. Staying united and calm as a couple often lowers the tension more than trying to convince him to agree.

We are praying for you both and for wisdom as you navigate this relationship with your father while guarding the unity you already have.

Father, we lift this husband and wife to you. Guard their marriage with your peace, keep them united and gentle with each other, and give them wisdom for conversations with family. Protect their home and guide their steps as they seek to follow you. In Jesus name, amen.

Your prayer for your marriage has been heard and we join with you in bringing it before the throne of grace in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We pray that the Lord will bless and keep your covenant, that He will give you and your wife a deep and abiding peace within your home, and that He will guard your household from every outside pressure that would disturb that peace. It is the Lord who has ordained marriage, that a man should leave his father and mother and cleave unto his wife and they two shall be one flesh, and it is in keeping close to His appointed ways, following step by step in the footprints of Christ, that His protection is promised. We ask that He would station His watch over your dwelling and bear you up in all your ways as you seek to walk in truth and love.

We rejoice to hear that you and your wife are of one mind and one heart in this matter, that she finds joy in keeping the home and caring for your children and that you gladly take up the calling to provide. This is an honorable and blessed estate, commended in Scripture as good and fruitful. Where there is such mutual love and unity, the marriage is cemented indeed, for it is not merely a contract but a becoming one.

Concerning your wife's father, understand that his counsel comes from his own experience and household, where his wife has been the breadwinner and his daughters have followed that pattern. He speaks according to what he has known, yet every household must be ordered before the Lord according to conviction and calling. You do well to honor him as your wife's father, to speak of him with respect and to receive him with patience, but you are also called to lead and protect your own home under Christ. The Scripture bids us to bear one another's burdens and to visit one another in love, yet it also teaches that a man and his wife must together establish their house upon the Lord's Word written upon their hearts.

We would encourage you not to move hastily toward offense or toward leaving fellowship or family where the Lord has placed you. Rather seek a quiet, united and gentle firmness. Let you and your wife together, in a spirit of meekness, make known your settled conviction with thankfulness for his concern, and then let your lives speak. Avoid debate that stirs strife, and answer his passive urgings not with sharpness but with steady kindness, showing by your peace and good order that your decision is not of neglect but of deliberate obedience and contentment. Pray for him, that the Lord would give him understanding and rest, and that he would come to rejoice in the peace he sees in your home. If opportunity allows, invite him to see the fruit of your wife's labor in the lives of your children, that he may understand the value of her work within the home.

Continue in prayer together daily, let the Law of the Lord be written more and more upon your hearts by knowledge and by growth in grace, and delight yourselves in His will. As you increase in knowledge of Christ, you will find strength to love what He loves and to stand with quiet confidence where He has called you.

We pray now, O Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Thy Son, that Thou wouldst bless this husband and wife, knit their hearts together yet more closely, fill their home with Thy peace which passeth understanding, and guard them from all that would divide. Give wisdom to this husband to lead with gentleness and strength, give grace to this wife to continue in her calling with joy, and give to her father a spirit of understanding and love that he may cease to press what burdens them. Keep this family in Thy appointed ways, that Thy angels may keep charge over them, and let Thy Law be their delight and Thy Gospel their comfort, until Thou bringest them into fuller conformity to Christ. Amen.
