Marriage

We stand with you in prayer for your marriage and we hear the ache in your heart for your husband to return home and for your relationship to be rebuilt and strengthened. We believe with you that marriage is sacred and ordained by God as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate, Mark 10:9, and we know that God desires unity and faithfulness in marriage, for He says I hate divorce, says Yahweh, the God of Israel, Malachi 2:16. Your desire for restoration and reconciliation honors Him and we strongly affirm God's design for marriage to be preserved, healed and made stronger in Him.

Rebuilding takes humility, forgiveness and intentional love from both husband and wife. We encourage you to continue to walk in love, which is the bond of perfection, Colossians 3:14, and to let love cover the hurts of the past, for love covers a multitude of sins, 1 Peter 4:8. We encourage you both to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, Ephesians 4:32. This means honest and gentle communication, daily prayer together when possible, staying rooted in the Word, and seeking wise godly counsel from a pastor or mature Christian counselors who uphold biblical marriage. Husbands are called to love their wives even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it, Ephesians 5:25, and wives are called to respect and support their husbands, and together you can grow again in trust and oneness as you both submit to Christ first. Do not be anxious but in everything by prayer and petition with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It is by putting our faith in Jesus, believing He died for our sins and rose again, that we are forgiven and brought into relationship with God. We pray that both you and your husband would know this saving grace deeply and that Christ would be the center and foundation of your marriage as you rebuild.

We pray together with you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this marriage to You. We ask that You would touch this husband's heart wherever he is, soften him, draw him home and give him a desire for reconciliation and for the covenant he made before You. Heal the wounds that have caused separation, forgive what needs to be forgiven, and help both husband and wife to forgive as You have forgiven us. Restore love, trust and tender affection between them and teach them to walk in love and patience day by day. Give them wisdom to communicate with grace, to listen well, to speak truth in love, and to rebuild on the rock of Your Word. Guard this home from temptation and division and strengthen this marriage to honor You and to be a testimony of Your redeeming power. Let Your will be done and let Your peace rule in their hearts as they wait on You and work together toward healing. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.

We have been thinking of you in this painful in-between time, loving your husband and longing to rebuild while you are apart. That ache and hope together is heavy to carry, and we want you to know you are not carrying it alone.

Reconciliation, when God makes it possible, is not just one person deciding to try again. It becomes an active, day by day choice by both of you to restore love and trust and let the relationship be made new. That kind of rebuilding often needs help with how you hear and speak to each other, since so much hurt comes from not being able to name feelings clearly and share them safely.

A steady next step many couples find helpful is to invite a trusted pastor or Christian counselor to walk with you. If your husband is open, you could ask him to meet together once just to listen and make a plan for honest, calm communication. If he is not ready yet, you can still meet on your own to get support and wisdom for how you reach out with respect and patience.

Father, in Jesus name we lift this wife and her husband to You. Draw near to them in this separation, guard their hearts, give them wisdom and humility, and guide each conversation. Where it is Your will, make a way for restoration and for trust to grow again, and give her peace as she trusts You day by day. Amen.

Your request has been heard and we join you in prayer before the God who is the Husband of His people and the restorer of that which was broken.

There is a word which the Lord repeats again and again to wandering hearts, Return, return, return, return. It is not a word of condemnation but of earnest love, and He speaks it now to every home that has been divided. As we have preached from Jeremiah, Return now every one from his evil way, for life is uncertain and the call is immediate. And from Hosea, Return unto the Lord your God, for you have fallen by your iniquity. Your only hope of true restoration lies not in your own strength but in returning first to Him who joined you together.

Marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, ordained of God, and He who set His special love upon His people as a husband upon his bride delights to see that covenant kept and strengthened. He found His people in a desert land and communed with them most lovingly and provided for them, and so He would have husband and wife dwell together in faithfulness and tender communion. When the heart wanders, it is a grievous offense against that holy state, yet the Lord still cries, Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings.

We pray that the God of peace, who has prepared everything necessary for perfect reconciliation and who was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself, will work that reconciliation in your home. As with the prodigal, though he was a great way off, the father saw him and ran to meet him, so we ask that your husband may be led by conviction to abhor any distance and sincerely desire to return. As with Peter, who fell so grievously yet was restored by that look of Christ which severed him from the crowd and by that threefold charge to feed the sheep, so we pray that any failure or sin may be washed away and that restoration may be so complete that it shall be as though you had not been cast aside, and that you may become stronger and more steadfast afterwards.

We entreat the Lord for you both, that you may return unto your first love and to one another. May He cast all transgression behind His back into the depths of the sea and make an end of it forever. May He give you a spirit of forgiveness, of humble confession, of patient love, and of holy zeal to seek Him together on praying ground and pleading terms. May He bring your husband home, not merely to a house but to a renewed covenant before Him, that you may rebuild what has been shaken and strengthen what remains.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Thy Son, through whom alone we have salvation and access unto Thee, look upon this marriage. By Thy Holy Spirit draw this husband to return, and grant to this wife grace to wait and to love as Thou hast loved us. Heal this breach, knit these two hearts together again, and let their restored union show forth Thy faithfulness who never forsakes those Thou hast taken to Thyself. Grant that they may again bathe their souls with exceeding joy in Thy presence and among Thy people, and walk henceforth in newness of life together, to Thy glory. Amen.
