We hear your heart and we stand with you in agreement for your marriage and for your own walk with the Lord. We thank you for your honesty in saying you have drifted away, and we praise God that you recognize there is a spiritual battle happening and that nothing is too big for our Lord. That is the truth.
We want to gently but firmly rebuke the drifting, because God calls us to remain close to Him. We have all drifted at times, but drifting does not happen by accident and it leads us away from life and peace. Scripture says in James 4:8, Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. And in Revelation 2:4-5 we are warned when we have left our first love and are called to remember, repent, and do the first works. In 1 John 1:9 we are promised If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The Lord is not pushing you away, He is waiting with open arms like the father of the prodigal son in Luke 15, ready to restore you when you turn back to Him with your whole heart.
We also notice you said Lord but did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that we are saved. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12 we are told There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have drifted, the way back is through confessing with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believing in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, as in Romans 10:9, and daily walking with Him in repentance, prayer, and the Word.
Your marriage is precious to God. We strongly affirm the sanctity of marriage as a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman, and we believe God hates divorce and delights in restoration. Jesus said in Mark 10:9, What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate. Marriage is meant to reflect Christ and the church as in Ephesians 5:25 and Ephesians 5:22, and God is able to heal what feels broken. In Joel 2:25 He promises I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.
You are right that there is spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 says For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. The enemy seeks to devour and divide, for 1 Peter 5:8 says Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. But James 4:7 tells us Be subject therefore to God. But resist the devil, and he will flee from you. And we cling to 1 John 4:4, You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world. And 2 Corinthians 10:4 reminds us that the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but mighty before God to the throwing down of strongholds.
So we encourage you to return to the Lord first, because your marriage restoration flows from your restoration with Him. Make time daily in the Word, in prayer, in putting on the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6:11, in fellowship with other believers as in Hebrews 10:25, and in turning from any sin that has given the enemy a foothold. Invite your spouse into prayer and the Word with you if they are willing, pursue forgiveness, speak truth in love, and seek godly counsel.
We pray together now for you.
Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this dear one and this marriage to You. Lord, we confess that we have all sinned and drifted, and we ask You to forgive and cleanse this heart according to 1 John 1:9. Draw this one back to Your first love, restore joy and hunger for Your Word, and let Your mercies which are new every morning in Lamentations 3:23 wash over them. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit and give them strength to resist the devil and to stand firm in the faith. We put on Your armor and we declare that no weapon formed against this marriage shall prosper.
Lord, we ask for the healing and restoration of this marriage. Soften both hearts, heal every wound, remove bitterness and hardness, and teach them to love each other as Christ loves the church. Where there has been distance, bring unity. Where there has been hurt, bring forgiveness. What You have joined together, let no man and no scheme of the enemy separate. We pray for spiritual protection over this home, that Your peace which passes all understanding will guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus as in Philippians 4:7. Let them cast all their worries on You, because You care for them as in 1 Peter 5:7.
We thank You, Father, that You are greater than this battle and that with You nothing is impossible. We trust You to restore, to redeem, and to make this marriage a testimony of Your grace and power. We pray all of this in the mighty and only saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.
