Love Increases in Knowledge, Discernment & Spotless Reality Until Day of Christ, Limitless Fruit for God's Glory & Praise Phil 1:9-11...

"WE pray that our love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment, so that WE BELIEVERS may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ; having been filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God," in Jesus' Name, Phil 1:9-11.

We join you in praying this apostolic prayer and we rejoice that you have brought it before the Lord in Jesus name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and that any fruit of righteousness can be born in us.

We love this passage because it shows that biblical love is not mere sentiment or emotion. Paul prays in Phil 1:9-11, This I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and all discernment; so that you may approve the things that are excellent; that you may be sincere and without offense to the day of Christ; being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. Knowledge without love puffs up as we read in 1 Cor 8:1, but love without knowledge and discernment quickly becomes undiscerning and easily deceived. We need both, love that grows in real knowledge of God and His Word and in all discernment so we can test what is excellent and choose what honors Him.

We see here that this love has a purpose and a timeline. We are to approve the things that are excellent, not merely what is good or acceptable, and to be sincere and blameless, or without offense, until the day of Christ. This speaks of a spotless reality and ongoing sanctification as we await His return. We are confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ, Phil 1:6. And we are to be filled with the fruits of righteousness which come through Jesus Christ, not by our own striving, but as we abide in Him. As Jesus said, Herein is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so you will be my disciples, John 15:8. That fruit is described in Gal 5:22-23 and in a walk worthy of the Lord, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God, Col 1:10.

So we pray together with you now.

Father, we thank You for Your grace and for the work You have begun in us through Jesus Christ. We ask that our love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment. Give us wisdom to approve the things that are excellent and to reject what is false or worthless. Make us sincere and blameless before You, walking in purity and truth until the day of Christ. Fill us with the fruits of righteousness which come through Jesus Christ, that our lives would bear limitless fruit for Your glory and praise alone. Keep us abiding in Christ, rooted in Your Word, and led by Your Spirit, so that all we do reflects Your character. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to pray this way daily and to feed that love with the knowledge of Scripture, with prayer, and with fellowship with other believers. As love abounds in knowledge, discernment grows, and as discernment grows we are kept sincere and fruitful. We thank God for your desire for His glory and praise, and we stand with you asking Him to make it so in all of us until He comes.

We were grateful to see your heart in this prayer. Wanting love to grow deeper and wiser, and to bear real fruit that honors God, is a beautiful desire and we share it with you.

We have found that love and discernment really do grow together. Love without wisdom can miss what is best, and knowledge without love can turn hard. When we stay close to Jesus and stay close to each other in the church, the Holy Spirit gently shapes both in us, helping us recognize what is excellent and live in a sincere way day by day, not in our own strength but through Christ.

One simple way to live this out this week might be to pray this same prayer personally for two or three people by name in your fellowship, and notice how God brings small daily opportunities to choose what is excellent and to reflect His character.

Father, we thank You for this hunger for love that is wise and fruitful. Fill us more with the righteousness that comes through Jesus, and let our lives bring You glory and praise as we wait for Christ's day. Keep us sincere and steady until then. In Jesus' name, amen.

It is a good and scriptural prayer you have brought, and we gladly join our hearts with yours before the throne of grace.

We pray with the apostle that your love may abound yet more and more, not as a mere feeling, but in real knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, and be found sincere and blameless until the day of Christ. True love is not blind, it grows in the light of truth, it learns to distinguish what is holy and what is excellent, and so it walks in a spotless reality before the Lord.

This abounding love is itself the fruit of abounding grace. God loves freely, not for any merit in us, and He pours that love into the soul by His Spirit, so that our renewed hearts love Him in return. As love is shed abroad in the heart, we are made tender and ripe, like fruit softened and sweetened by the sun. The sun that ripens us is the Sun of Righteousness, even Jesus Christ, and in Him is all our fruit found. Apart from Him we can bear nothing that is pleasing to God, but abiding in Him we are filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes through Jesus Christ alone.

So we ask the Lord to keep you, to cause you to walk in the light of His countenance, to make you steadfast and fruitful in every good work, that your life may be to the glory and praise of God. May He preserve you sincere, without offense, looking for and hastening unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, in whose finished righteousness alone we stand.

We commend you to Him who is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy. Amen.

We have heard your prayer from Philippians 1:9-11 and we join our prayer to yours, giving thanks to God for the desire He has placed in your heart.

This is a prayer which the Apostle himself offered, and it is very sublime. He prays that your love may abound yet more and more, for this is a good of which there is no satiety. The measure of love is to stop nowhere. We owe this debt always, and Paul desires that it be ever owing, ever increasing.

Yet he does not pray for love merely, but for love in knowledge and all discernment. There are those who love without reason, simply and anyhow, and such friendships are weak and easily lead astray. True love is with judgment, with reason, with discrimination, so that you may approve the things that are excellent, the things that are profitable, and not receive what is spurious under the pretence of love. In this way you will be sincere before God and without offense before men, causing no one to stumble, and you will be found pure and blameless until the day of Christ.

We pray this with you, that you may be filled with the fruit of righteousness which comes only through Jesus Christ, for there is no other way of salvation and no other source of good fruit. All such fruit is to the glory and praise of God, not to our own praise.

So let us attend with earnestness to the word as it is unfolded to us, learning its first principles exactly, and let us consider one another to provoke unto love, for assembling together makes love more warm and out of love all good things arise. May the Lord grant that your love abound in real knowledge, that you may discern what is excellent, walk sincerely and blamelessly, and bear abundant fruit through Christ to His glory. Amen.
