Lost child

Your cry ascends to the throne of God, where the Father and the Son dwell in perfect, eternal unity. This is no small grief you bear, and the Lord who sees all things knows the ache of a heart longing to be bound again to a beloved child. The love between a father and his son is a living image of that divine bond, and the wound you feel now is a shadow of what our own rebellion inflicts upon the heart of God. Yet He does not cease to call us to Himself. So neither must you cease to call upon Him, and to stretch out your heart toward your son, even when your own strength fails.

Consider that even in the blessed Trinity, the Son says, “All Mine are Thine, and Thine are Mine.” There is no distance, no coldness, no estrangement in the divine nature; yet think what the Son has done to draw us who were far off into that very intimacy. He did not wait for us to return. He came to us, clothed in our weakness, bearing our sorrows. The death of your wife has cast a heavy shadow over your household. Your son, in his grief, has withdrawn, perhaps not from you alone, but from the unbearable pain of remembering, from the vulnerability of needing comfort. He is a child lost in a cloud, and you are the father who must stand at the edge of that cloud, calling and waiting, never retreating.

Do not imagine that your prayers are unheard because the change tarries. The Father reveals the Son, and the Son reveals the Father, and this revelation is often accomplished through patient, enduring love. Your steadfast presence, your unceasing prayer, your refusal to let bitterness take root, these are the means by which the Spirit works. The same Spirit who is the love between the Father and the Son will, in His time, breathe upon your son’s heart and turn it back to you. Strive together with the grace of God in your prayers, as the Apostle says, and cling to this truth: He who suffered to give us the adoption of sons will not despise the groaning of an earthly father. He who allowed a slave to be called His father according to the flesh, in order that He might make the Lord a Father to us slaves, knows how to mend what is broken.

Wait on the Lord with bold expectation. Be for your son what the Father is to us, always ready to receive, slow to anger, abounding in mercy. Let your love be a quiet fire that warms him from a distance until he is able to draw near again. I will pray with you, that the God of all consolation will lift the heaviness from your son’s spirit, that the memories of his mother will one day bring sweetness rather than only pain, and that the two of you will once more be bound together, not only by blood, but by a shared taste of the love that holds Father and Son in eternal embrace. Take courage. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted.

The ache you carry is one Scripture understands deeply. From the very beginning, the first time love appears in the Bible, it is the love of a father for his son. That love was tested and stretched, and you are living in a season of stretching right now. The silence you feel from your son since his mother’s death is not the end of the story. God knows what it means to give His only Son, and He knows the longing of a father’s heart.

What you are asking for is a restoring of that bond, a return to closeness. In that, you are asking for something that echoes the very heart of the Father toward the Son. The oneness they share is the pattern for all other restored relationships. The Son Himself prayed that those given to Him would be kept and brought into that same unity. So your prayer is not a small one; it touches the deepest current of God’s own love.

In your pain, you may feel like your son is lost to you, as if a wild beast has torn him away. But consider this: what looked dead in Abraham’s mind, his son, was actually being held for a greater return. The Lord saw the father’s heart that would not withhold his only son, the son he loved. That story was a shadow of a greater sacrifice, but it was also a proof that what is surrendered in grief can be given back in joy. The Father who gave His only begotten Son to adopt us as sons has not forgotten your tears.

The influence of a mother is powerful, for good or for ill. Your son has lost that guiding voice in his life, and the grief has turned him inward. But remember, the Spirit of the Son sent into our hearts cries out, “Abba, Father.” That Spirit is the one who draws a son back. No one can come to the Father unless the Father draws him, and no one truly knows the Son unless the Father reveals him. Pray that the Father will do this revealing work in your son’s heart, that the Spirit will stir in him a cry for his earthly father as a reflection of the true Father’s love.

You say he is your only son. So hold fast to this: the Son who was lifted up promised that whoever sees the Son and believes will have everlasting life, and He will raise them up at the last day. More than that, He commits to keeping those given to Him. Entrust your son to the keeping of the Father. He kept His own through every trial. The life we now live, even in these sorrowful places, we live by the faith of the Son of God who loved us and gave Himself for us. That is the ground beneath your feet when everything else feels like it is giving way.

Your prayer is heard. Do not let go of the promise that the son of the free woman is an heir. Your son is an heir of more than grief. Keep your heart open to him, not with pressure, but with the patient, steady love of a father who, like the father of the prodigal, is always looking down the road. What is broken is not beyond the reach of the One who glorified the Son through a cross and brought life out of death.

We are so grateful you entrusted us with your heartfelt prayer request for your precious son. Our hearts have been united with yours these past days, lifting him and your relationship before the Father, asking Him to mend what has been broken and to draw your son close to you once again. We continue to stand in faith, believing that God hears the cries of a father’s heart and is at work even now, softening hearts and restoring what has been lost.

If the Lord has already moved in a tangible way—if you’ve seen glimpses of His healing in your relationship—we would be overjoyed to hear your praise report so we can rejoice with you. If, however, the distance still feels heavy and the answer hasn’t yet come, we encourage you to post this request again so we can persist with you in prayer. We will not grow weary in interceding for your son and for the restoration of your bond, for we know the Father delights in bringing families together under His love.

May the Lord bless you with His peace as you wait on Him, and may His presence surround you both, guiding each step toward reconciliation. We pray this in the powerful and precious name of Jesus. Amen.
