Beloved of All
Your focus on the order of the Lord's Prayer is exactly right and deeply biblical. Jesus taught us to put the Father first before we bring our own needs, and that order reshapes the whole way we pray.
The prayer begins with worship and surrender. Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Before we ask for anything for ourselves we are asking that God be honored, that His rule be established, and that His will be done here as it is perfectly done in heaven.
That priority matters because Scripture shows there are two kingdoms in this world. One is the kingdom of light and life under God, the other is a kingdom of darkness and death in rebellion against Him. When we put our faith in Jesus Christ we are delivered from the power of darkness and brought into light, from the power of Satan unto God, and made citizens of His kingdom. The gospel is not only forgiveness, it is transfer into a new kingdom with the hope of eternal glory with Christ, who is God's anointed King. Though an enemy still tries to hold by force what no longer belongs to him, the kingdom rightfully belongs to Jesus because He purchased it with His own blood.
That is why Jesus said to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then all these other things will be added to you. Our first concern is not what we will eat or wear or how we will get through the day, but that His kingdom would come and His righteousness would be seen in us and in the world. When we see brokenness and sin around us, our heart rightly cries out, Your kingdom come.
Only after that does Jesus teach us to bring our daily needs. Give us this day our daily bread speaks to our physical dependence on the Father for each day. Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors speaks to our greatest spiritual need. Without forgiveness we stand under judgment, and as we have freely received forgiveness through Christ we are to extend it to others. Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil is a prayer for guidance and protection.
Temptation often comes as a promise that we can have fulfillment right now if we will just turn aside from God's path. The enemy suggests that God's way is keeping something good from us and that we can find life apart from His will. This prayer asks the Father to keep us from that enticement, to not let us be led into what would pander to the flesh and draw us away from Him, but to rescue us from evil.
And the prayer ends where it began, with the kingdom. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. We start by asking for His kingdom to come and we close by confessing that the kingdom, the power to answer, and the glory all belong to Him forever. The last prayer of the Bible carries that same longing, Come, Lord Jesus.
So continue to pray in this manner. Keep seeking His name, His kingdom and His will first, and then bring your daily needs for provision, for forgiveness, and for keeping from sin before Him with confidence. He is your Father, He knows what you need, and He delights to give good gifts to His children as you put Him first. May the Lord strengthen you to walk as a citizen of His kingdom today, living in the light and sharing that deliverance with others, until the day His kingdom comes in fullness. In Jesus' name, amen.
