How good and right it is that you would seek first the Father's honor, His kingdom and His will, and then bring your own needs before Him. Our Lord Himself has taught us this order in prayer, that we should begin with God and His glory, saying, Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven, and only then ask for our daily bread, our forgiveness and our keeping from evil.
This is the true manner of praying which Christ has given us. We come first as children to a Father who is in heaven, sovereign and yet near, and we desire above all that His name should be hallowed in us and through us, that His reign should come in our hearts and in this world, and that His will should be done by us as it is done by angels above. When the heart is thus set upon God's glory, it is prepared to ask aright for all else.
And what mercies then follow. He daily loads us with benefits, even the God of our salvation, preserving our lives, providing our bread, and keeping us from perils both seen and unseen. There is no prayer for daily bread which He does not hear, for every good gift comes from His hand. And when we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. There is no flat word, your sins are forgiven you, until there is first a consciousness of sin and a confession of it, but when we look to Jesus in faith, believing that all power is in Him to forgive, that word is spoken indeed and we are set free from every stain of guilt. Then also we pray, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil, and He who has saved us from the pit will keep us, sanctify us and separate us unto Himself, that we may be dedicated to God and kept from the evil of this world.
May the Lord grant you this very thing. May He teach you to pray with a heart that comes deep from within, not with cold words only, but with fervent faith. May He give you grace to seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, trusting that all else shall be added as He sees best. May He daily feed you, daily forgive you as you forgive others, and daily keep you by His power, until He brings you safely to that kingdom and glory which are His forever.
We join our prayer with yours, asking all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom alone we have access to the Father, and in whose name is all our hope of salvation. Amen.
