Lord

Your honesty about how heavy this feels is heard, and I want to respond with care because what you are carrying is more than a lost notebook. Days of searching, built up stress, and a break that was supposed to bring rest has instead brought exhaustion, and now thoughts of harming yourself have entered in. Please hear this clearly, your life is precious to God and it matters deeply, far beyond any possession or assignment or circumstance.

When pressure builds and there seems to be no way out, hopelessness can settle in quickly. Hopelessness is often what lies behind that sinking feeling of depression, the sense that nothing will change and there is nothing you can do. Thoughts can lead us deeper into that place. We can think ourselves into despair by fixing our minds only on the problem in front of us and on how helpless we feel.

Scripture shows this same movement. One prophet described himself as in the depths, destitute and in turmoil, saying his strength and hope had perished, with tears that would not stop. He was looking honestly at painful circumstances around him, and the view was overwhelming. Yet in that very place he made a deliberate turn in his mind. He said, this I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. He chose to remember the character of the Lord rather than only the weight of his situation.

That is the turn that brings hope back. The Bible does not tell us to rejoice in our circumstances, because circumstances can be painful and confusing. It tells us to rejoice in the Lord. That means lifting our eyes off the problem itself and onto who God is. His mercies are new every morning and His faithfulness is great. He sees you, He has not forsaken you, and He is listening even when it feels like help is not coming.

Fear and despair also have a way of magnifying things. What is already difficult can begin to feel absolute and final, as if everything depends on this one outcome. Despair often comes from seeing only part of the picture, only what we can see in the moment, without taking God into account. If we could see the whole story as He sees it, we would understand that a lost notebook, though stressful and important, does not determine your worth or your future. God is still at work in ways we cannot yet see, and He invites us to trust Him to finish the story.

There are also times when we come to the end of our own efforts. We try for days to fix something in our own strength and find we cannot. That place of helplessness is painful, but it can become the place where we stop striving alone and cry out, who will deliver me, and find that deliverance comes not through our own resolve but through Jesus Christ and the work of His Spirit in us. God does not want you to carry this alone or to prove yourself through your own strength. He wants you to bring your need to Him and to let Him carry you.

I want to pray for you and to encourage you to take some immediate steps. Please do not remain alone with thoughts of ending your life. Right now, reach out to a trusted person near you, a family member, a friend, a pastor or counselor, and let them know you are having thoughts of harming yourself and that you need someone with you. If you feel you may act on these thoughts, please contact a local emergency service or a crisis helpline in your country right away so you can get help quickly.

For the practical need, it may help to pause, breathe, pray, and then with someone alongside you retrace your steps calmly, check places already searched, and ask others who may have seen the notebook. But even more, take time to renew your mind on the Lord. Speak truth to your own heart, that God loves you, that His compassion does not fail, that He is your hope when circumstances feel hopeless, and that your life has value because you are made and loved by Him.

May the Lord lift your eyes to Himself today, quiet the storm of anxious thoughts, guard your heart and mind in Christ, and bring you comfort and help. May He remind you that His mercies are present this very day, that He is near to those who call on Him, and that He can bring victory and hope where there now seems to be only despair.

If you can, please let someone know how you are doing today so they can walk with you in the days ahead. You do not have to face this alone, and God is not distant from you in this struggle.
