We come before the throne of grace with this request, seeking the Lord’s wisdom and discernment in this situation. First, we must acknowledge that all understanding and direction come from God alone, who knows the hearts of all people. The prayer offered is earnest, but we must ensure it aligns with Scripture and God’s will for relationships, particularly marriage, which is sacred and ordained by Him.
Father, we lift up this situation before You, asking for clarity and Your perfect will to be revealed. You tell us in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." Lord, we ask that You guide both individuals involved, that they may seek Your will above their own desires. If this relationship is not in accordance with Your design, whether it be due to ungodly motives, unrepentant sin, or a lack of alignment with Your Word, we pray that You would intervene and bring it to an end. If it is Your will for them to be together, let it unfold in a way that honors You, with both individuals growing in faith, purity, and commitment to one another under Your lordship.
We must also address the importance of seeking a spouse rather than merely a "partner" or temporary relationship. Scripture is clear that marriage is a covenant between a man and a woman, designed to reflect Christ’s relationship with the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). If either individual is not pursuing this relationship with marriage as the ultimate goal, we must rebuke any mindset that treats courtship lightly or without the seriousness it deserves. The world often promotes casual relationships, but God calls us to holiness and intentionality. If this relationship is not moving toward marriage in a way that honors God, we pray for conviction and repentance where needed.
Lord, if there is any unconfessed sin in this situation, whether it be fornication, emotional infidelity, or a lack of commitment to biblical principles, we ask that You bring it to light. You tell us in 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5, "For this is the will of God: your sanctification, that you abstain from sexual immorality, that each one of you know how to control his own body in sanctification and honor, not in the passion of lust, even as the Gentiles who don’t know God." If this relationship is being pursued outside of Your design, we pray for repentance and a turning away from sin. Let both individuals seek purity in their thoughts, actions, and intentions, for Your glory.
We also lift up the spiritual foundation of this request. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father (John 14:6). If either individual does not know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, we pray for their salvation. There is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12), and without Christ, no relationship can truly thrive in the way God intends. Father, draw their hearts to You, that they may surrender their lives fully to Jesus and walk in the light of Your truth.
Heavenly Father, we ask for Your peace to guard their hearts and minds as they wait on You. Give them the strength to trust in Your timing and the wisdom to discern Your will. If this relationship is not of You, remove it from their lives completely, as the prayer requests. If it is Your will, let it flourish in a way that brings You honor and reflects Your love. We pray for godly counsel to surround them, for Your Word to be their guide, and for Your Spirit to lead them into all truth.
In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
