What you went through sounds exhausting and deeply frustrating, and it makes sense that you feel angry, betrayed and even guilty as you have replayed it all. Waiting for hours while being told it would only be a short while longer, discovering that the person you trusted had left without anyone telling you, and feeling pressured to sign before you could even look carefully at what you were buying would leave anyone feeling taken advantage of, especially when it was your first time making such a large purchase.
Your prayer for a heart full of mercy and grace is a beautiful response, and it reflects the heart of God. In Scripture we learn that mercy means not receiving what we do deserve, and grace means receiving what we do not deserve. We all deserve judgment for our sin, so we never want to ask God for justice. Like David we cry, have mercy upon me according to your tender mercies. God does not give us the punishment we deserve, and then He goes further and gives us blessing and forgiveness we could never earn. That is His grace.
The guilt you felt about bargaining after you had already agreed, and the second guessing about not taking the refund, is something you can bring honestly to Him. God is abundantly merciful and ready to pardon. Forgiveness does not come by justifying or hiding what we have done, but by confessing it openly before Him. When we acknowledge our part, He blots it out completely. Though our sins are like scarlet, He makes them white as snow through Jesus.
The deeper peace you are asking for comes only one way. God wants peace with you and has made a way for that peace through the blood of Jesus Christ. At the cross, mercy and truth met together and righteousness and peace kissed each other. It would not be just to simply excuse the guilty, yet God is merciful. Justice was satisfied because Jesus paid the penalty for our sin, so God can be both just and merciful and forgive us. When you have peace with God through Jesus, that peace can then settle inside your own heart where the turmoil and anger have been raging.
That inner peace is kept as your mind stays on Him. Scripture promises that He will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him because he trusts in Him. This is the peace that passes all understanding, the peace Jesus Himself leaves with us. It does not come from circumstances going smoothly, but from knowing He is caring for you even in this. The wisdom that comes from above is peaceable, and those who sow peace reap a harvest of righteousness. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
God is not looking for a reason to condemn you. He looks for reason to show mercy, and He is sovereign in showing it. He has shown it to you in Christ, and He can form that same merciful heart in you toward those who wronged you. You do not have to excuse dishonesty to release your anger to Him. You can trust Him to deal justly while you choose to not hold the offense with bitterness.
I pray that the Lord will quiet your heart and help you sleep in His care. May He lift the weight of guilt as you confess it to Him, fill you with His undeserved favor, and guard your heart with His peace as you keep your thoughts on Him. May He give you wisdom for the practical steps ahead with the vehicle and the dealer, and shape in you a gracious and merciful spirit that reflects Jesus, even when others have not treated you well.
