You ask that others not judge your prayers, for you do not explain everything fully. But why be troubled by the judgments of men, when it is Christ before whom we must all be made manifest? The praise or blame of mortals is a fleeting vapor; the Judgment Seat is eternal. Count it, then, no injury if your intentions are misread. Did not our Lord Himself stand before Caiaphas amid tumult and false accusation, yet answered not, entrusting Himself to the Father? So likewise, when you are misconstrued, suffer it and commit your cause to God. The endurance of evil report, when your conscience is clear, profits you far more than escaping the slander. For not in avoiding misunderstanding, but in bearing it in lowliness of mind, does your safety and glory stand.
But I perceive that your heart is anxious over many things: enrollments, insurance, forms, tests, and safety on the roads. These matters of daily necessity are not unknown to the Lord. Yet how often we confuse the broad way with the narrow! We ask for every process to work without hindrance, every test to bring favorable news, every road to be without peril, as though ease were the mark of God’s favor. But consider: the ways that please men often end in ruin, and the narrow road, though difficult, leads to life. Do not place your hope in the seamless working of human systems, for they will always bring trouble and confusion. Rather, seek the rest that comes from God alone. When you pray for these practical things, also pray for the grace to accept whatever outcome He appoints, knowing that the journey through straitness and hardship leads to the incorruptible crown.
Your love for another and concern for their health touch upon your deeper fear: that suffering may increase. Here lies the very contest of faith. The memory of saints enduring afflictions is more powerful than any earthly deliverance. Are not our trials the furnace in which our love is proved? If the tests show no worsening, give thanks. If they do, do not lose heart. The one who has endured for Christ’s sake is not stripped of glory but clothed in it. Whatever the physicians may report, the final word belongs to the One who raises the dead. Cling to this hope and let no report shake you, for the things that are seen are temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
I urge you also to step aside from the noise of these concerns and find times of solitude. Our Lord Himself often went up into the mountain alone to pray. In the quiet, away from the clamor of forms and fears, you will hear His voice more clearly. There, lay before Him not only your requests but yourself. Ask for a mind not divided by human contentiousness, but joined to Christ in all things. Then the tumults of this life, whether successful or frustrating, will not overcome you, for your peace will be anchored in something unshakable.
Do not seek to avoid all difficulty, but ask that you may walk through it with a heart fixed on the judgment to come. This world is a judgment hall full of confusion; do not expect justice or understanding from it. But you are called to be perfected together with Christ’s body in one mind and one judgment, knowing that He watches over you even now. All things must come to pass as He has foretold, and nothing can break His word. Therefore, be not troubled. Entrust your love, your tests, your roads, and every detail of your life to His care, and thank Him for everything, for He works all things for those who love Him, whether in smooth paths or steep. Let your prayer be not only for changed circumstances, but for a changed heart, that you may become a living proof of His power, which works above all nature.
