Chrysostom
Beloved of All
When you ask for wisdom to pass an exam, you touch on a far deeper need. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and without that holy fear, all human cleverness proves to be empty folly. God’s wisdom, given in Christ, far surpasses every wisdom of this world. If you seek understanding, then seek Him who was made wisdom for us. Set your heart on a virtuous life, for nothing makes a person so truly wise as a soul rooted in godliness.
Your examination requires diligent study, and that is right. Yet think of that study as a small picture of the preparation of the gospel of peace. Just as a soldier’s feet must be shod with readiness, so your life itself must be made a smooth and level path for the Lord. A disciplined daily routine, offered in faith, becomes a training in peace. Let your study desk be an altar where fear is exchanged for trust. Anxiety grows in the soil of an unprepared soul. So prepare yourself first by confessing your sins, forgiving any who have wronged you, and embracing the peace Christ won for you. When you are at peace with God, you face no true enemy in the examination hall.
Do not measure God’s favor by a passing score. The ruler of any earthly licensing body is but a servant used by God for a time, and even his authority contributes to the quiet order of this life. Your highest good is not a certificate, but to be found faithful to the work of the Lord. If you pass, give thanks and use your profession to serve others with humility. If the outcome is other than you hope, take it as God’s hidden wisdom drawing you nearer to Himself. In either result, the soul that fears Him lacks no good thing.
Therefore, study with all your mind as if success depended on effort, but pray with all your heart as if everything depended on grace, for it truly does. Let go of the burdens of tomorrow, and walk today in the light of His commandments. Then, whether you enter that testing room or any other trial, you go with the only preparation that cannot fail.
