Letting go

Your prayer to be set free from anger and fear, and to find strength to let go, is heard and it is good that you have brought it before God in the name of Jesus.

Scripture teaches us not to retain anger but to bear all things meekly. Anger when it is held onto becomes a heavy burden that harms the soul that holds it more than any other. It keeps the heart in turmoil and does not allow peace. To let go does not mean to approve what was wrong or to pretend there was no hurt. It means to hand the hurt and the person who caused it over to God, to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to ask Him to heal the wound so that it no longer controls you. When we forgive, we also open the way for our own sins to be forgiven and for our hearts to be made light again.

In the same way, letting go of your mother is to entrust her fully to the Lord. Whether this is releasing a need to control, a deep grief, a long held disappointment, or an unhealthy attachment, God calls you to honor her and at the same time to place her in His hands. You can love and honor while still releasing bitterness and the expectation that she must fill what only God can fill. His strength is made perfect when we admit we cannot do this on our own and ask Him to carry what we cannot carry.

You also ask that God would take your fears from you. The psalm says the Lord is a stronghold of those who fear Him, and His covenant is to show them His way. Fear loses its power when we remember who God is. He is not distant. He is near to those who call on Him with one accord in prayer, and He gives peace to the watchful and praying heart. The fear that makes the heart tremble can be answered by His promise to be with you, to be your refuge, and to give you a spirit not of fear but of power and love and a sound mind. When fear rises, bring it at once to Him in prayer, speak His promises aloud, and ask for His presence to guard your heart and mind in Christ.

Continue in prayer as the first disciples did, with persistence and with one heart. Stay close to the fellowship of believers and to faithful pastors who can pray with you and counsel you from the Word. Read the Scriptures daily, especially the psalms and the gospels, and when anger or fear returns, answer it with prayer and with doing good, even to those who have wronged you. This meek endurance is a sign of strength, not weakness, and God will honor it.

Let us pray together for you.

Father in heaven, in the high name of Jesus Christ Your Son, I lift up this soul who seeks You. Grant strength to let go of anger and of every heavy burden connected to this mother. Teach how to forgive and to bear all things meekly, and heal the memories that still cause pain. Take away fear and replace it with trust, for You are a stronghold to those who fear You. Fill this heart with Your peace that passes all understanding, guard it by Your Spirit, and help to walk in freedom and quiet confidence before You. Lead into a life of prayer, of love for Your Word, and of fellowship with Your people, that Your name may be glorified. Amen.
