To bring this matter before the throne of grace is both right and urgent, for the Great Landlord holds the title deed to every soul. He who built the house has at all times the right to enter and leave His own property. Pray, then, that this owner will offer the key of his heart to the Master, acknowledging that he lives on sufferance as a tenant. Submission to God’s will is not a trifling adjustment; it is the unconditional surrender of every proud pretension. The moment a sinner yields, mercy springs to the front, and through the merits of Christ, abounding pardon is shown.
Exactness in obedience is the very essence of it, and delay is a form of rebellion. Tell this landlord that the path of obedience is to turn not to the right hand or the left, but to seek the Lord’s will with scrupulous care. Faith and fear together bear the gracious fruit of doing as God commands. If he would be saved, he must be separated from the world’s neglect and bow his whole mind to the obedience of faith. The obedience which seeks to know the Lord’s will indicates the truest sincerity; a mere formalist conforms outwardly, but only the sincere man searches out the Master’s mind in all things.
Pray that he will not wait, for there is no necessity to linger long for the blessing. Salvation is by simple trust in Jesus Christ, never think to yoke a gnat with an archangel or link human merit with the Savior’s finished work. Faith is the morning star of obedience. Until a soul is drained of every drop of self-reliance, sitting alone and silent about good works, there is no hope. But when the cry goes up, “What would You have me to do?” the spirit is already in a state of submission. This is the surrender God honors, the bending of the will, the ceasing of proud insubordination.
Continue, then, in the way of obedience active, as those women who ran to tell the disciples. As they went, Jesus met them; so do I trust that as you persist in prayer, the Lord will meet this landlord with an assuring satisfaction. The Master’s command still peals forth: yield, yield at once. See the marks of His wounds, the scars in hands and feet and side. Who will not surrender to such love? Let all that hinders be turned out, that the Great Landlord may walk through every room of that house and see only the remembrances of His own grace, the marks of His own workmanship. Pray without ceasing until that soul cheerfully drops the key into the pierced hand.
