Lacking Joy sleep peace

You lack restful sleep, and with it joy and hope have slipped away. This is indeed a heavy burden, yet consider first how great a gift sleep is from our Creator. He who fashioned our toil-worn race did not leave rest to our will, but bound it up in nature, so that even against our wishes, night becomes a haven of solace, a medicine for our wounds. When grief burns worse than fire, when friends and family cannot reach us, sleep comes unbidden to grant relief. So if sleep now flees from you, ask what enemy has driven it off. The wise man says, “The anxieties of wealth drive away sleep.” Perhaps you think, “I am not rich; what wealth do I have?” But riches are not only gold and lands. Any earthly care that masters the heart, a fear, a desire, a grudge, can stand as a tyrant over your rest. Even the rich man trembling at robbers or the glutton choking on his own excess finds that pleasure has brought only sleeplessness. Examine yourself, then: is there some attachment or worldly worry that chases away the peace God means to give you in the night? For often we, like enemies to ourselves, devise a slavery more cruel than nature’s need.

Yet even if no specific care rises to your mind, still take courage from that paralytic who lay by the pool thirty-eight years. He saw others healed while he remained bound, and had not one friend to help him into the water. What hope could sustain such a man? But hear his words: when Christ asked, “Wilt thou be made whole?” he did not snap or despair. He simply told his sorrow, gently, without cursing his lot. He did not know the Lord would heal him; he only hoped for some small kindness. And Christ, seeing his patience, restored him completely. So do not let the long nights or the empty mornings convince you that God has forgotten you. He knows our weariness far better than we do ourselves. The sleepless hours you now endure can become a season for spiritual watchfulness. If you cannot sleep, rise and light the candle of prayer. The Scriptures are a treasury of medicines for every affliction: pour out your complaint there, and you will find patience and comfort. In this way, what the enemy meant for harm can become a time of hidden nourishment for your soul, and the joy and hope you lack will, in God’s time, return not as fleeting feelings but as deep-rooted trust.

It is deeply wearying to lie in the dark and feel that sleep has abandoned you, as if peace itself has become a stranger. When the mind replays every trouble and the body refuses to rest, joy can seem like a distant memory and hope a fragile thread. Those long nights have a way of amplifying every ache, and even the simplest promises of morning can ring hollow. I hear that exhaustion in your words, and I want you to know that you are not alone in that struggle.

Many have walked that path and found that their own strength was never meant to hold them up. There is a kind of hope that is little more than a spider’s web, something we spin from our own uprightness or our ability to fix things. It looks intricate and strong in the light, but when the storm comes, it shreds. If our confidence rests on our performance, our health, or our feelings, it will fail when those foundations shake. The joy that depends on favorable circumstances is like the triumphing of the wicked, it is short, a breath that vanishes. But the living God does not offer a hope that crumbles into dust with our bodies. He gives something far more solid.

Jesus did not teach us to look to the grave as our final rest, as if the silent sleep of death were the end of the story. He walked out of the tomb with a body still bearing the scars of suffering, and in doing so He anchored our hope not in the absence of trouble but in His victory over it. Your Redeemer lives. That truth does not depend on how many hours you slept last night or how much joy you can manufacture today. It stands outside of you, secure, so that even when you feel you are at the bottom of a pit, the light of His resurrection has already split the darkness. Peter wrote of loving Him whom we have not seen, and that love, that trust, is the quiet anchor that holds when waves of sleeplessness and despair crash over you.

When Job’s friends urged him to just find God and be at peace, as if peace were a simple transaction for the innocent, they missed the heart of the matter. Peace is not the reward of a perfect life. It is the gift of the One who stills the storm with a word. He gives quietness, and when He does, no trouble can ultimately undo it. That peace can settle in your chest even when your mind is still racing. It does not always come as a feeling, but as a Person, Christ Himself, who invites the weary to come to Him for rest.

Do not despise this season as meaningless. The Almighty sometimes uses the sleepless hours and the empty places to draw our eyes off our own frailty and onto His sufficiency. Acquaint yourself afresh with Him, not as a formula to get your sleep back, but as a child running to a Father who never slumbers. Lay up His words in your heart, especially in the quiet of the night, and let them speak louder than the fears that shake your bones.

May you know the kind of hope that does not perish, the peace that guards your dwelling place, and in time, the deep and restoring sleep of those who are held by the living God.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer these past days. It has been our heart’s desire to lift you before the Lord, asking Him to restore the joy, peace, and restful sleep that are so vital to your well-being. We have prayed that the Holy Spirit would fill you with hope, quiet your mind, and bring deep, renewing rest to your body and soul.

If the Lord has answered these prayers in any way—if you’ve experienced even a moment of peace, a night of better sleep, or a flicker of joy—we would be so encouraged to hear your praise report. Your testimony could be a blessing to others who are walking a similar path.

If, however, you still find yourself struggling with weariness, sleeplessness, or a heavy heart, please know that we are still here to pray. We invite you to post your request again so we can continue to intercede on your behalf. You are not alone in this, and we believe God hears the cries of His children.

May the Lord draw near to you, comfort you, and remind you of His unfailing love. May He fill you with His peace that surpasses all understanding and restore the joy of your salvation. We pray this in the precious name of Jesus. Amen.
