We come before You, Lord God Almighty, with hearts laid bare, acknowledging our constant need for Your wisdom and humility. The prayer you’ve shared resonates deeply with us, for we know the danger of self-deception, how easily we can mistake earthly success, knowledge, or status for true wisdom. Proverbs 28:11 warns us plainly: "The rich are wise in their own eyes; one who is poor and discerning sees how deluded they are." This verse is not merely about wealth in material terms but about the poverty of spirit that comes when we rely on ourselves rather than You.

Father, we confess that we are prone to pride. Even in our service to You, we can become puffed up with knowledge, thinking our understanding is complete. We forget that "the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding" (Proverbs 9:10). Without You, we are fools, no matter how much we may know or possess. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we have trusted in our own reasoning, our own strength, or our own righteousness. Strip away the delusion that we are sufficient apart from You.

We lift up this prayer for wisdom and humility, asking that You would cultivate in us a discerning heart, one that sees through the lies of this world and clings to Your truth. The world exalts the proud, the self-made, and the self-assured, but You have chosen "the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and the weak things of the world to shame the strong" (1 Corinthians 1:27). Teach us to boast only in You, for "let him who boasts boast in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 1:31).

Lord, we pray that You would root out every trace of arrogance in our spirits. Show us where we have elevated ourselves above others, where we have dismissed the wisdom of the poor in spirit, or where we have failed to listen to Your voice because we were too busy listening to our own. Humble us, Father, not by shame, but by the gentle conviction of Your Holy Spirit. Remind us daily that "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble" (James 4:6). May we walk in that grace, always aware of our dependence on You.

We also pray for those who are struggling with pride in their wealth, their intellect, or their position. Soften their hearts, Lord, and open their eyes to see that "what is highly esteemed among men is detestable in God’s sight" (Luke 16:15). May they find true riches in You, the "unsearchable riches of Christ" (Ephesians 3:8). For those who are poor in material things but rich in faith, we ask that You would strengthen their discernment and use them to expose the folly of the proud.

Father, we thank You for Your Word, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). May we never stray from its truth, no matter how the world may mock or dismiss it. Keep us teachable, always ready to receive correction, always willing to learn from those You place in our lives. Help us to value Your truth over human applause, to seek Your approval above all else.

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh, who humbled Himself even to the point of death on a cross (Philippians 2:8). It is only through Him that we have access to You, Father, and it is only by His name that we are saved. There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). May we never forget that our wisdom, our strength, and our very lives are found in Him alone.

Lord, we surrender our pride, our self-sufficiency, and our delusions of grandeur to You. Fill us with Your Spirit, that we may walk in humility and truth. May our lives reflect the wisdom that comes from above, "pure, peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy" (James 3:17). Use us, Lord, to point others to You, the source of all wisdom and the giver of every good gift.

Thank you for sharing this honest prayer with us. It takes a measure of humility just to name the desire aloud, to ask God to keep us from the quiet drift toward thinking our own insight is enough. That openness is a grace in itself, and we’re grateful to stand with you in it.

What we’ve seen, both in our own lives and in walking with others, is that humility rarely arrives through a moment of insight. It’s more often formed in the ordinary friction of relationships and the ache of our limitations. When we fail, when we’re wrong about something we were sure of, or when someone gently points out a blind spot, that can feel like a bruise, but it’s often the kindest gift God gives us. He uses those times to loosen our grip on self-reliance and to teach us what it means to depend on Jesus, the true Bread that sustains us from the inside out.

One small, practical way to keep that awareness alive is to regularly ask a trusted person, “Where have you seen pride or self-wisdom creeping into my life, and how can you pray for me to stay close to Christ?” It can be uncomfortable, but inviting honest eyes into our hidden places starves the delusion that we’re fine on our own. Combined with unhurried time in prayer, opening ourselves to the Spirit’s searching, that practice can keep our hearts pliable.

Lord Jesus, you are the Word made flesh, the wisdom we so desperately need. When we begin to lean on our own understanding, gently turn us back. Expose the subtle pride that masquerades as strength, and give us the courage to receive correction and the grace to rest in your sufficiency. Hold us close, day by day, in simple, childlike dependence. In your name we pray, amen.

The prayer that has been lifted up is one after God’s own heart, for it recognizes that every man’s wisdom, when it is his own, is but folly with a fine coat on. Pride is the prelude to destruction, and it is the shadow that goes before a fall. You have rightly seen that the rich in this world are prone to be wise in their own eyes, but what is that to any of us, whether rich or poor, if we still cling to our own judgments and refuse the teaching of the Spirit? True humility does not merely confess, “I am poor and discerning,” but looks to the poverty of spirit that knows it has nothing save what it has received. The man who truly sees how deluded pride has left him will never dare to trust his own sight again until first he has looked through the eyes of Christ.

Keep ever in your mind that the Word of God is the sword of the Spirit. It is not your wit that pierces the darkness, but that blade which the Holy Spirit alone can wield. When a man sets up his intellect as the measure of Scripture, he is like a fly judging an elephant; his chattering is not wisdom. The Spirit of God must illuminate every soul that looks to Jesus, and that illumination comes not to the proud, but to the teachable. The throne of humility is the heart, and in that heart the Spirit works to take of the things of Christ and show them to us. Never allow success, knowledge, or even the praises of men to make you think that you can advance an inch in the heavenly race by your own strength. “Serving the Lord with all humility of mind” means that the goodness of God, instead of becoming a couch for your sloth, must be an incentive to your industry. Let your dependence be on the blood of the Son, not on any seal or experience, and let the Spirit bear witness that you are a child of God, even while you cry, “I am not worthy of the least of all Your mercies.”

Lay hold of this truth: Christ is your wisdom. In Him are hidden all the treasures, and apart from Him every thought that lifts itself up is a phantom. Pray, then, without ceasing for that Spirit of wisdom and revelation, that you may be kept from the delusion that shipwrecks so many, who begin in the Spirit and then think to be made perfect by the flesh. The humble soul, the one who trembles at God’s Word, is the one who finds that the sword of the Spirit cuts down pride, self-righteousness, and unbelief with equal edge. You will then bring forth humility as one of the sweet fruits of the Spirit, and your end shall be everlasting life, by the grace of God. Walk in this way of humility, and you will find that the way of wisdom is indeed the path of the just, shining more and more unto the perfect day.

You pray to be kept from the delusion of thinking yourselves wise on your own. This very prayer is a sign of wisdom, for pride is the fountain of all wickedness, and humility is the principle of all self-command. Consider how the rich, puffed up by their wealth, are wise in their own eyes, but the one poor in spirit, with true discernment, sees through that hollow display. That show of wisdom has no real power, no truth; it is only an appearance of piety and modesty. The wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. It ends here, still unable to help those who cling to it.

A proud person suffers from a grievous and foolish disease of the soul, one that defiles more than fornication and offers not the slightest excuse. It was this sickness that cast the devil from his former confidence and sent him to the pit of fire. Yet Christ, the very Bread of Heaven and Word of Life, the Wisdom of God and the Messenger of great counsel, though He is the Mighty God, did not seize equality with God as something to be exploited, but humbled Himself. In this we learn what true humility is: to humble the mind not under compulsion, but when we have power to be high-minded. The Canaanite woman showed such wisdom. She heard herself called a dog, and she neither bristled nor fell silent; instead, she owned that truth and still begged for the crumbs that fall from the Master’s table. Her humility became her crown.

Hold fast, then, to nothing except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. In what the world calls folly is the power of God and the hidden wisdom that God foreordained before the ages for our glory. Let your faith stand not in the persuasive words of human cleverness, but in that power alone. If you truly wish never to be deluded by self-wisdom, flee pride as the source of all evil, and embrace with all humility of mind Him who is the Word. Root out every trace of arrogance, and He will guard you from that snare.
