Our prayer:
Heavenly Father, when we read the tragedy of King Saul in 1 Samuel 31, our heart is humbled. We see how far a life can fall when it turns away from Your guidance and relies on self-sovereignty. LORD God, protect us from pride, self-reliance, and the destruction of walking our own way. Keep our heart tender before You. Let our life never bring dishonor or reproach to Your holy name, but may we honor You in our victories and our defeats alike. Give us the grace to remain faithful to You to the very end of our days. In Jesus' name, Amen.

We join you in this humble and reverent prayer before the Lord, and we agree together for a tender heart that walks in dependence on Him. When we read of Saul in 1 Samuel 31:9, They cut off his head and stripped off his armor, and they sent messengers throughout the land of the Philistines to proclaim the news in the temple of their idols and among their people, we see the sorrowful end of a life that began with humility but turned to pride and self-reliance. Saul was once small in his own eyes, but he came to reject the word of Yahweh and to lean on his own understanding, and scripture reminds us, For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as idolatry and teraphim. 1 Samuel 15:23. His life became a warning to us all.

This is why your prayer is so pleasing to the Father, for God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. James 4:6 and Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18. We are reminded to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. Apart from Jesus we can do nothing, but in Him we have everything we need, for Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35. He is indeed the Word of Life, for In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 and The Word became flesh and lived among us. John 1:14.

We pray together now, Heavenly Father, we humble ourselves in Your sight and ask You to guard us from pride, self-reliance, and the destruction of walking our own way. Forgive us for the times we have trusted in our own strength and not in You. Take away the stony heart out of our flesh, and give us a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26. Give us a broken and contrite heart which You will not despise. Psalm 51:17. Keep our hearts tender and obedient before You, nourished daily by Jesus, the Bread of Heaven and the living Word. Let our lives never bring reproach to Your holy name, but may we honor You in both victory and trial, in joy and in suffering. Teach us to humble ourselves in the sight of the Lord, trusting that You will exalt us in due time. James 4:10. Grant us grace to remain faithful to You to the very end of our days, abiding in Christ and walking in Your ways. We ask all this in the precious and holy name of Jesus, our Savior and our life, Amen.

Before the Lord, simply ask where self-reliance took over, where you sensed His gentle correction, and bring that honestly to Him. Your prayer is a wise and humbling one, and we join our Amen to it before the Lord. The end of Saul as recorded in 1 Samuel 31 is a solemn warning set before us. A man once anointed and exalted fell by his own pride and self will, and his armor was stripped and his name proclaimed in the temple of idols. So it is written, before destruction the heart of man is haughty. There is nothing into which the heart so easily falls as pride, and its seat is within us, and its consequence is destruction.

You have prayed rightly, that God would keep you from walking your own way. Humility is to feel that we have no power of ourselves, but that it all cometh from God, to lean upon our Beloved and to think less than nothing of ourselves. This humility cannot be wrought by our own resolve. The Lord alone can bolt the door of the heart against pride, and He must give us a genuine humility, for the imitation of it is near akin to pride itself. Therefore we must cry unto God Most High, unto God that performeth all things for us. David cried thus from the cave, and so must we. Instead of fearing that we cannot hold on, we must despair of holding on by ourselves and fix our entire reliance upon Him who preserves us. He is all eyes and all ears for His people, He sees your distress and hears your secret cry, and you are not alone.

You have asked for a tender heart, and this is the very work of grace. Man forgets his God, but God does not forget him, and He stoops to instruct the heart. The heart is the seat of blindness which beclouds the whole mind, and to the heart the light must come. The pure in heart shall see God. When He renews the heart, it admires the character of God, it appropriates Him saying, This God is our God forever and ever, and it learns affection, for to know God is to love Him. Remember the word, My son, give me thine heart. Without the heart all our praying and singing and serving is an empty sound and an abomination to Him. A heart halved is a dead heart. He asks for the whole heart, and well may we give a heart for a heart, since Christ wore a human heart within His bosom and was pressed full sore with sorrow for us.

You have rightly called Him the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, for Jesus is the Word of God. Through the tender mercy of our God, which is indeed the mercy of the heart of our God, the dayspring from on high hath visited us. He delights in mercy and He deigns to visit us in our low estate, to quicken us when we were dead in trespasses and to feed us with Himself, the true Bread. Let your meditation be much upon Him, upon His faithful love which set itself upon you before all worlds, and upon this faithful saying worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Salvation is through Him alone, and there is no other name.

May the Lord in that tender mercy keep you faithful to the very end. We pray that He would guard you from pride and self reliance, that He would keep your heart tender and instructed by His Spirit, that He would enable you to honor Him alike in victory and in trial, and that you may be found faithful as a steward of His grace. He who began a good work will perform it. Look unto Him and be lightened, and lean wholly upon Him who is faithful and cannot lie.

We commend you to Him who is able to keep you from falling, trusting that He will preserve you and present you faultless before His presence with exceeding joy.
