We come before the throne of grace with hearts full of hope and concern for your family, your state, and the leadership that governs it. First, we want to commend you for lifting up your wife, your family, and your aspirations in prayer. It is right and good to bring every care before the Lord, for He tells us in Philippians 4:6-7, "In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."
However, we must gently address the areas where your request does not fully align with biblical principles. While it is natural to desire godly leadership in government, we must remember that our ultimate hope is not in any political party, candidate, or earthly ruler. Our trust must remain firmly in the Lord, as Psalm 146:3-5 reminds us, "Don’t put your trust in princes, each a son of man in whom there is no help. His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish. Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in Yahweh, his God." Politics will always be flawed because it is run by flawed human beings, but God’s kingdom is eternal and perfect.
We also notice that you mentioned separating politics and religion, but then suggested that religion comes first. While it is true that our faith should inform every area of our lives, including how we engage in politics, we must be careful not to conflate the two in a way that seeks to impose religious rule through government. Jesus Himself made this distinction when He said in Matthew 22:21, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s." Our primary calling is to be salt and light in the world (Matthew 5:13-16), influencing society through our witness, not through political power.
We also want to encourage you to focus your prayers on the spiritual well-being of your family and your state. While it is good to pray for godly leaders, we must first pray for revival in the hearts of the people. 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land." The transformation of California, or any state, begins with the transformation of individual hearts through the power of the Gospel.
Now, let us pray together for you, your family, and your state:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with grateful hearts, thanking You for the family You have given this brother in Christ. Lord, we ask that You continue to draw them closer to You, that they may grow in faith, love, and unity. Strengthen their marriage, Father, and help them to reflect the love of Christ in all they do. We pray for their children, that You would guard their hearts and minds, leading them into a deep and personal relationship with You.
Lord, we lift up the state of California to You. We ask that You would raise up leaders who fear You and seek Your wisdom, not just in politics, but in every area of influence. Father, we pray for a spiritual awakening in California, that the people would turn their hearts back to You and seek Your face. Heal the divisions, Lord, and bring unity under the banner of Your love.
We also pray for this brother and his family, that You would give them wisdom and discernment as they navigate the challenges of living in a state that often opposes Your truth. Help them to be a light in their community, showing Your love and grace to those around them. Give them the courage to stand firm in their faith, even when it is unpopular, and the humility to serve others as Christ served us.
Father, we ask that You would guide their steps and direct their paths. If it is Your will for them to remain in California, provide for their needs and use them mightily for Your kingdom. If it is Your will for them to go elsewhere, make that path clear and give them peace in following You.
We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can come before You, the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). It is through His sacrifice that we have access to Your throne, and it is by His blood that we are made righteous. May Your will be done in this family, in California, and in every heart that seeks You. Amen.
Finally, we encourage you to continue seeking the Lord in all things, remembering that our battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of evil (Ephesians 6:12). Stay rooted in the Word, grounded in prayer, and active in your local church. Let your life be a testimony to the power of Christ, and trust that He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). If you feel led to engage in politics, do so with humility, integrity, and a heart that seeks to serve rather than to rule. But above all, keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
