We hear your heart, dear one, and we understand the tension you feel between the love and protection of your family and the desire for godly independence as an adult. Your family has been a blessing to you, a covering in the way Scripture speaks of, and that is something to be grateful for. Yet we also recognize that there comes a time when a man or woman must step into the fullness of adulthood, making decisions before the Lord and walking in the wisdom He provides.
The Bible tells us in Genesis 2:24, "Therefore a man will leave his father and his mother, and will join with his wife, and they will be one flesh." While this verse speaks directly to marriage, it also carries a broader principle, that there is a season of leaving and cleaving, a time when even unmarried adults must learn to stand before God on their own, seeking His will and direction apart from the constant oversight of parents. This does not mean cutting ties or dishonoring your family, for Exodus 20:12 commands us to "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you." But it does mean growing in maturity, taking responsibility for your own faith, decisions, and walk with the Lord.
We also want to gently encourage you to examine whether there are areas where you may be relying too heavily on your parents for direction rather than seeking the Lord first. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." Have you been bringing your decisions, big or small, before the Lord in prayer, or have you allowed your parents’ voices to overshadow His? The Lord desires to be your ultimate covering, your Shepherd, and your Guide. Psalm 23:1 reminds us, "Yahweh is my shepherd: I shall lack nothing."
We also want to pray for you, asking the Lord to give you wisdom and discernment as you navigate this season. May He show you where to step out in faith, where to honor your parents without being bound by fear or dependence, and how to cultivate a deeper trust in Him alone.
Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister in Christ, lifting up their desire for godly independence. Lord, You have placed them in a family that loves and protects them, and for that we give You thanks. But now, Father, we ask that You would help them to grow in maturity, to seek Your face above all else, and to walk in the confidence that comes from knowing You as their ultimate covering. Give them wisdom to know when to listen to their parents’ counsel and when to step out in faith, trusting in Your leading. Break any chains of fear or insecurity that may be holding them back from embracing the fullness of adulthood You have for them. May they find their strength and identity in You alone, and may their steps be ordered by Your Word. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
We encourage you to spend time in prayer and in God’s Word, asking Him to reveal the areas where He is calling you to step out in faith. Seek godly mentors, other mature believers, who can speak into your life and help you grow in wisdom. And remember, independence does not mean isolation; it means learning to walk closely with the Lord while still honoring the family He has placed you in. You are not alone in this journey, for the Holy Spirit is your Helper, and we are standing with you in prayer.
