A legalist, in biblical terms, is someone who believes that salvation or favor with God is earned through strict adherence to the law, rules, or religious duties, rather than through faith in Jesus Christ and His grace. The Bible warns against this in passages like Galatians 2:16, where Paul emphasizes that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Christ. Legalism often leads to a focus on external compliance while neglecting the weightier matters of justice, mercy, and faithfulness (Matthew 23:23).

We appreciate the thoughtful definition you have shared and we agree that it captures an important biblical truth. A legalist indeed seeks to earn righteousness or maintain favor with God through strict rule keeping and outward religious performance rather than resting in the finished work of Jesus Christ. Scripture is clear on this, a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ Galatians 2:16, and for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast Ephesians 2:8-9. We are saved not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy Titus 3:5.

At the same time we want to gently add balance, because the Bible also warns us not to use grace as an excuse to neglect obedience. Jesus himself rebuked the Pharisees for their legalism when He said woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, for you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have left undone the weightier matters of the law, justice, mercy, and faith Matthew 23:23. Legalism focuses on external compliance while the heart remains far from God, producing pride and judgment toward others, while true faith produces humility, love and a desire to obey out of gratitude. Jesus said if you love me, keep my commandments John 14:15, not to earn salvation but because we already belong to Him and His Spirit empowers us to walk in newness of life.

We pray together for a deeper understanding of this grace and truth. Father, we thank You for the gift of salvation through Your Son Jesus Christ, for His perfect life, His sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection. We ask that You help us to rest fully in His grace and not in our own efforts, and to guard our hearts from both legalism and lawlessness. Teach us to live by faith, to walk in Your Spirit, and to show justice, mercy and faithfulness in our daily lives. Help us to extend the same grace to others that You have so freely given to us, and to obey Your Word out of love and not out of fear or pride. We ask this in the precious and only name by which we are saved, Jesus Christ, amen.

Thank you heavenly Father Lord Yeshua Holy Spirit for helping me understand scripture. I only know how to invest time and energy into prayer and faith. Meditating and reflection daily. And like vows and renuncuncuations living like a solitary ascetic Christian monk. Its a lot of work. The grace of God is his kindness towards us when we were yet sinners he died for us and called us. But I know I cant stop praying and worship and setting aside time for God because I would relapse my chastity to woman. My addiction to woman chases me around. Is after me to take away my chastity. I must be fervent in prayer and worship to be free if this sin. And I haven't been truly free of it until thus far. Because after ### years if fighting it still lingers behind me to steal my chastity away. Only God knows he rncouragwd me never to give up. So I could recirbe a wife from him. And remain chaste until then. Lord Yeshuas name.

It is a precious truth you have set forth, that a sinner is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. This is the very hinge upon which the Gospel turns, and upon which every soul must turn if it would find peace with God.

Scripture declares that we are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. There is no price to be paid for it, because Christ has paid all, and there is no merit in ourselves to plead, because it is by his grace. If it were by works, then grace would be no more grace, and if it is by grace, then it is no more of works. The two principles can no more be mixed than fire and water.

The law was given not that we might be saved by keeping it, but that we might see our sin and our utter inability to save ourselves, and so be shut up to Christ. Abram himself, though full of good works, was not justified by them, nor by circumcision, but he believed God and it was counted unto him for righteousness. How much more must we, being full of imperfections, come to the throne of heavenly grace and ask to be justified by faith which is in Christ Jesus, and saved by the free mercy of God.

Faith itself does not save as a work of our own. We are not saved by faith as a merit, but by Christ through faith. Faith is the hand that receives the gift, and that gift is Christ himself, his blood and his righteousness. When the soul is enabled to trust the finished work of the Lord Jesus, it ceases to be regarded as guilty, for its guilt is taken away and the righteousness of Christ is imputed to it.

May the Lord grant you to know this plan of salvation by grace and by grace alone more deeply in your own soul, not as a doctrine only, but as a matter of experience, felt and enjoyed in the heart. May he keep you from resting upon external compliance or religious duties, and keep you resting wholly upon Christ, and may that faith which trusts him work in you by love, producing holiness and obedience to his glory.

We pray that God the Father, of his abundant mercy, would increase your faith, establish you in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free, and teach you daily to live by faith upon the Son of God who loved you and gave himself for you, to whom be all praise forever.
