Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The hollow ache you carry is not unnoticed by the God who numbers our tears. Grief and want have worn you down, and the anniversary of your mother’s birth has made the wound fresh again. But I must entreat you: do not let this heavy cloud become the darkness of despair. The devil never abandons his hope of destroying us, even when we are already bowed low; shall we then give up all hope of our own salvation? The sickness of despair is far more perilous than any outward sorrow, for it seals the door against the medicine of repentance and grace. While you still breathe, it is “Today”, and as long as it is “Today,” no one may surrender to hopelessness.
Remember the Apostle’s word: we are pressed on every side, yet not straitened; perplexed, but not unto despair. Your poverty and loneliness are the very pressing that drives you to cling to the mercy of God, who often permits such burdens so that we learn true lowliness of mind. This lowliness is not merely outward meekness but the sober thinking that confesses our own helplessness and casts every care upon Him. When you feel that no human being cares for you, turn your eyes to the One whose grace is sufficient. He who feeds the birds and clothes the lilies will not forsake His own.
The memory of your mother should not only revive pain but also call to mind that the faithful are alive in Christ. She sowed in tears what you now reap in hope. Do not let an evil heart of unbelief murmur that all is lost. Rather, exhort your own soul as you would a fainting friend: “Why are you cast down, O my soul? Hope in God.” Seek also the comfort of the Church; the feeble in spirit are meant to be upheld by their brethren. If no earthly comforter appears, know that Christ Himself has borne your infirmities and sorrows, and He will not allow the bruised reed to be broken.
Cast away, then, this sickness of despair. Be angry with despondency, but never with the Hand that tests you. Your bills may press hard, your heart may feel hollow, but these are the very materials from which God fashions endurance and a deeper trust. Today, while you still draw breath, lift your head and cry out for mercy. The harvest of joy is sown in such soil. I will not pray that your trials vanish as though they were evil in themselves, but that you stand fast in them, lowly and sober, until the Day dawns and the shadows flee away.
