I need help to forgive others

I really want to forgive anyone for anything I think I'm holding onto things, wrongs committed against me but I really don't want to, Jesus endured the cross for us how can I not let this go? Please pray that God would no matter what it takes to reveal areas of unforgiveness and lead me to forgive permanently, that it could not rise up again.

We hear the cry of your heart, and we stand with you before the throne of grace, asking the Lord to move mightily in this area of unforgiveness. Your desire to forgive, even when your emotions resist, is a powerful testimony to the work of the Holy Spirit within you. Jesus did indeed endure the cross, not only for the salvation of the world but also as the ultimate example of forgiveness. He prayed, "Father, forgive them, for they don’t know what they are doing" (Luke 23:34 WEB), even as He was being crucified. If He could forgive those who mocked, betrayed, and murdered Him, then by His strength, we too can forgive those who have wronged us.

Unforgiveness is a heavy burden, one that the enemy uses to keep us in bondage. It poisons the heart, hinders prayer, and blocks the flow of God’s peace. Jesus warned us, "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14-15 WEB). This is not to condemn you but to remind us all of the seriousness of holding onto bitterness. Forgiveness is not a feeling, it is a choice, an act of obedience to God, and a release of the debt we feel others owe us.

We also recognize that forgiveness does not mean excusing sin or pretending the wrong never happened. It does not always mean reconciliation, especially if the other person remains unrepentant or unsafe. But it does mean surrendering the right to hold onto anger, resentment, or the desire for vengeance. It means trusting God to be the righteous Judge (Romans 12:19 WEB) and choosing to walk in the freedom Christ died to give you.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister in Christ, who is struggling with unforgiveness. Lord, You see the depths of their heart, the wounds that have been inflicted, and the pain that lingers. We ask You to reveal any hidden areas of unforgiveness, anything they may not even be aware they are holding onto. Search their heart, O God, and lead them into the fullness of Your healing (Psalm 139:23-24 WEB).

Father, we ask that You would soften their heart and fill them with Your love, which covers a multitude of sins (1 Peter 4:8 WEB). Give them the strength to release every offense into Your hands, trusting that You will deal justly with all things. We pray that the Holy Spirit would empower them to forgive permanently, so that bitterness cannot take root again. Guard their heart from the enemy’s lies, which seek to keep them in bondage. Instead, fill them with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7 WEB).

Lord, we declare over them the truth of Your Word: "Bear with one another, and forgive each other, if any man has a complaint against any; even as Christ forgave you, so you also do" (Colossians 3:13 WEB). Help them to see those who have wronged them through Your eyes, broken people in need of Your grace, just as we all are. May they experience the freedom that comes from walking in forgiveness, and may their life be a testimony to Your transforming power.

We also ask, Father, that You would heal the wounds that have been caused by others. Pour Your balm of Gilead over their heart (Jeremiah 8:22 WEB) and restore what has been stolen. Let them know, deep in their spirit, that You are close to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18 WEB).

Finally, Lord, we ask that You would help them to forgive themselves for any ways they have held onto this burden for too long. Remind them that Your mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 3:22-23 WEB) and that You are not holding their struggle against them. Help them to press forward into the fullness of what You have for them, a life marked by Your love, grace, and freedom.

We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who forgave us while we were still sinners (Romans 5:8 WEB). Amen.

Beloved, we encourage you to take practical steps as the Lord leads you. Write down the names of those you need to forgive and pray over that list, releasing each person to God. If possible, consider reaching out to them in love (not to rehash the past but to extend grace). If reconciliation is not possible or wise, still choose to forgive them in your heart. You may also find it helpful to meditate on Scriptures about forgiveness, such as Ephesians 4:31-32, which says, "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you" (WEB).

Remember, forgiveness is a journey, and the Lord will meet you in it. You are not alone, and His grace is sufficient for you (2 Corinthians 12:9 WEB). Keep pressing into Him, and He will lead you into the freedom He has promised.

We can hear how much you want to be free from this heaviness. The very desire to let go is already God’s kindness stirring in you, you’re not clinging to bitterness, you’re longing to release it. And we know how frustrating it is when you’ve truly decided to forgive, yet the hurt seems to resurface on its own. Please don’t let that surprise convince you you’ve failed.

Forgiveness often works in two layers. There’s the act of your will, the decision to cancel the debt, to refuse revenge, and that’s something you do in a moment before God, and he honors it. But then there’s the emotional side, where the sting can still echo and catch you off guard. That doesn’t mean you haven’t forgiven; it means you’re still healing. The heart takes

time to catch up with the choice, and God is not impatient with you in that.

One thing that helped us was to notice when an old wound stirred, and instead of feeling defeated, simply say quietly, “Lord, I’ve already forgiven that. I trust you with the justice. Please heal this part of me again.” Then, if you can, offer a very short prayer for the person, not because they deserve it, but because it loosens the memory’s grip. Some of us have also found it freeing to remember a time we were forgiven ourselves, and let that mercy soften our own heart just a little more toward the one who hurt us.

We’ll join you in asking God to do exactly what you said: no matter what it takes, reveal anything still lurking and lead you into forgiveness that stays.

Jesus, thank you for this honest, aching desire. You see every wound and every lingering shadow. Gently bring to light anything still clinging, and then, by your Spirit, quiet the inner storm. Replace the ache with your steady peace, and when the memories rise, let your nearness be stronger. We ask for a freedom that lasts, not by our own grit, but because you are faithfully at work in us. Amen.

Holding on to wrongs committed against you while pleading your own pardon before God is a contradiction that should alarm the soul. The very prayer that teaches you to ask for mercy bids you say, “Forgive us, as we forgive our debtors.” Unless you have forgiven others, you read your own death-warrant when you repeat the Lord’s prayer. Do not attempt to deceive God, He sees the heart, and He knows whether the release you offer is real or only a pious word while the accounting ledger stays open.

Yet what a glorious pattern is set before you. Christ forgave you completely. He does not forgive and afterwards accuse, His forgiveness is eternal, and there are no “buts” in it. He not only forgave you at the first all your sins, but continues daily to forgive, for the act of forgiveness is a continuous one. Some of us have had so much manifest forgiveness, so much outward sin forgiven, that for us to forgive ought to be as natural as to open our hands. You have been released from a debt you could never pay, now the Lord expects you to release those who owe you. At the end of every seven years you shall make a release, and this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release it; he shall not exact it of his neighbor, because it is called the Lord’s release.

That release must be complete, a non-exacting of the penalty forever. I heard one man say of his friend, “Yes, I forgive him, but I will never trust him again.” Not so the Lord, and not so must it be with you. You ask God to reveal areas of unforgiveness and to lead you to forgive permanently, so that it cannot rise up again. This is a right prayer, for only God can give such thorough grace. Turn to Him and whisper this certainty into your own heart: “There is forgiveness.” Where God draws no limit, do not you draw any. As He is so ready to forgive, let us be ready to be forgiven, and equally ready to forgive. If He has blotted out your transgressions for His own sake, can you not for His sake let go these lesser debts?

Therefore, renounce that lingering bitterness. Pass by your enemy’s castle in safety and say, “I cannot renounce my hope of forgiveness, therefore my enemy shall have his release from me.” God will do what you ask, He will search out those hidden roots of unforgiveness and pluck them up by the Spirit’s power. As you stand before the Cross where Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them,” see there both your pardon and your pattern. Go now and do likewise, with no delay, for “behold, now is the accepted time.”

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The very desire you have to be searched and cleansed is itself a sign of grace. You are not trying to excuse the wrongs done to you. You are asking God to remove the hidden roots of bitterness, and that is the right prayer. Do not be afraid of what He may reveal. When He shows you an area of unforgiveness, receive it as mercy. Do not hide it or defend it. Bring it into the open and confess it as sin, because holding onto a wrong done against you is not the same as enduring it patiently.

The master had already willed to forgive the servant, but He drew from him the entreaty so that the servant would learn compassion from his own need. In the same way, your part is not to manufacture a feeling of forgiveness but to will it and to keep bringing the offense to God. For forgiveness of our own sins there is a road that requires no labors, no expense of wealth, no long travels; it requires only the choice of the will. So when you choose to release each person into the justice and mercy of God, you are doing what Christ taught, not once or seven times, but without limit.

You are right to look at Jesus enduring the cross. He bore sins to the Father, not to determine anything against mankind, but that He might forgive them. If He did that with your sins, no wrong committed against you is greater than what He has already pardoned in you. Let that comparison humble the anger and soften the memory.

I will pray as you ask: that God would no matter what it takes reveal every place of unforgiveness, and that He would establish permanent forgiveness in your heart so that the offense cannot rise up again. When it does rise, do not conclude that nothing has changed. Bring it back to the Lord as often as it appears. Each time you surrender it, it loses a little more of its power, until what was once a festering wound becomes a scar that no longer controls you.

Pray then in this way: Lord, search me and know me. Show me every wrong I have stored up. I confess my unforgiveness as sin. I release each person into Your justice and Your mercy. Forgive me as I forgive them, and make this forgiveness permanent, not by my strength, but by Your grace. Amen.
