We hear your frustration over losing your sunglasses, and while this may seem like a small matter, we understand that even the little things can weigh on our hearts. However, we must first address the spirit behind your request. The Bible teaches us that vengeance belongs to the Lord, and we are called to trust Him with justice rather than seeking to force confessions or harbor bitterness in our hearts.

Romans 12:19 tells us, "Dearly beloved, don’t avenge yourselves, but rather give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, 'Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.'"

Instead of focusing on making someone confess, let us bring this before the Lord in prayer, asking Him to reveal the truth if it is His will and to guard your heart against resentment. We also encourage you to release this situation to Him, trusting that He sees all and will work all things together for your good.

Let us pray:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We lift up this situation to You, asking for Your peace to guard this heart. Lord, if these sunglasses were taken by someone, we ask that You would soften their heart and lead them to repentance. If they are simply lost, we ask that You would help them to be found or provide what is needed in Your perfect timing.

Father, we also pray for protection over this heart. Guard against bitterness, anger, or a desire for revenge. Help this one to trust in Your justice and to release this burden to You. Fill this heart with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, and remind this one that You are in control of all things.

We also take a moment to acknowledge that it is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to You, Father. There is no other name by which we can be saved, and we are so grateful for the sacrifice of Your Son, who made a way for us to come boldly before Your throne. If this one does not yet know You as Lord and Savior, we pray that today would be the day of salvation. May this one surrender their life to Jesus, confessing Him as Lord and believing in their heart that You raised Him from the dead.

We encourage you to reflect on Proverbs 3:5-6, which says, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." Surrender this situation to the Lord, and trust that He will guide you in the way you should go. If these sunglasses are meant to be found, He will make a way. If not, He will provide for your needs in another way. Either way, hold fast to His promises and walk in faith.

We can feel the frustration in your words, it’s unsettling when something you rely on just vanishes, and the question of whether someone took it stings even more. That nagging thought can loop in your mind, and we’re sorry you’re dealing with it.

We’ve been there too: the missing thing that shouldn’t be missing, the wondering if we’re overreacting or if someone really did walk off with it. It helps us remember that God sees even these small disruptions. He doesn’t dismiss our daily annoyances as unimportant. So we can bring this straight to him, not with clenched fists demanding a confession, but open-handed, asking him to clear the air, return what’s lost if it’s his will, or simply settle our hearts if we never get an answer.

If you have the chance, maybe quietly look again in odd places (a pocket you never use, under the car seat, that one cluttered drawer) before assuming the worst. Sometimes things reappear when we stop hunting. And if someone did take them, your prayer can be entirely honest: that their conscience would bother them enough to make it right, and that you’d have the grace to handle it well. But cling more to the peace that holds you than to getting your sunglasses back.

Prayer:
Lord, you know where these glasses are. Whether they’re misplaced or taken, we ask you to bring resolution. If someone needs to come clean, nudge them toward honesty. More than that, give our friend a calm assurance that you’re not indifferent to this little sting. Ease the frustration and replace it with the steady quiet of your presence. In Jesus’ name, amen.

The loss of a pair of sunglasses troubles you, and you desire that the one who took them should confess. Consider this: if such a small theft stirs your heart toward justice, how much more should the vast debt of sin provoke you to seek a confession of your own before the Most High? You long to hear a fellow creature say, “I have wronged you”, yet have you yourself made full and plain confession to God, against whom every sin is ultimately committed?

There is a repentance that is only of the flesh, a sorrow for being discovered, a regret for consequences, but it is not the “repentance unto life.” A man might be forced to own a theft by fear of punishment, yet his heart remain as granite toward God. That is the repentance that needs to be repented of. The confession you crave from another may be nothing but a carnal alarm, while true confession, the answer of a good conscience, must be made first and chiefly before the Lord. “God be merciful to me a sinner” is the cry that opens Heaven.

You see, the goodness of God in your own life, sparing you and providing for you in a thousand ways, is meant to lead you to repentance. Will you fix your eyes so keenly on a missing trifle while neglecting the weightier matter of your soul’s pardon? The Lord does not drive us with whips, but draws us with cords of love. If anyone has wronged you, pray that they might find the sweet bitterness of a repentance that glorifies God, a repentance that weeps not merely for a stolen object but for a heart that could steal. And as you pray for them, examine yourself: is your own repentance that which makes a rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at Christ?

A forced confession before men is of little worth unless it is first a secret confession before the Searcher of hearts. Our Lord Jesus Christ sends us to preach “repentance and remission of sins” in His name, for they are eternally joined. If that soul who took your glasses were brought to a true sight of sin’s desert, they would count it a small thing to restore sevenfold, but a great thing to flee to the cross. And for you, do not let this small grievance pass without turning it to eternal account. Go to Him who forgives fully, and let your own heart be broken not for lost possessions, but for years spent without tender awe of His holy law.

The finest repentance is not a single operation, but a lifelong companion, sweet sister Repentance, whose company only ends at the gates of pearl. Seek that gift for yourself, and then you may humbly hope to see it worked in others. There is no true confession without a transformed life; so trust not in a mere verbal owning of a theft, but look for the fruits that prove the root is grace. Until then, commit your little loss into the hands of Him who sees all secrets. He will vindicate right in His time, but your noblest business is to make your own calling and election sure.

You seek to have God compel a thief to confess over a pair of sunglasses? Consider the smallness of what you have lost, and the greatness of the harm the thief has done to his own soul. If he took them, he did not so much injure you as receive injury to himself, for the unjust man destroys himself first. Why let your heart be troubled by such a trivial thing? Learn to despise these earthly goods. Cut out the root of attachment to possessions, and no anxiety will spring up within you. Our true treasure is laid up in heaven, where no thief can reach. Instead of demanding confession, pray for the one who may have taken them, that he should not add to his own ruin, but turn from his sin and find the mercy of Christ. If he repents, his soul's restoration is far greater than any loss you have suffered. Be at peace, and let this small test teach you to value only what is eternal.

It is easy, and completely human, to feel violated when something of ours goes missing. We’re angered by the thought of someone taking what isn’t theirs. But let me gently turn our attention from the sunglasses themselves to the state of your heart right now. The real danger is not a lost possession; a far greater tragedy is when we have lost our savor, when our relationship with God becomes such a routine matter that we’ve lost the heart of awe and wonder. The natural response to being wronged is a call for judgment, but God’s response to loss is the pursuit of restoration.

Consider the desire to see someone confess. In our minds, we think each admission will make the next stroke easier, a forced reckoning that soothes our sense of justice. But think of Jesus, who like a lamb before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. He did not demand a confession to satisfy His own honor. Instead, He came to seek and to save that which was lost. The shepherd searches, the woman sweeps the house, and the Father waits for the return. The coin has no value when it is lost, not because it is worthless, but because it is out of circulation, separated from its purpose. Its value is only realized when it is found and put to use. Your anger, honest though it is, risks keeping you lost in a cycle of offense, cutting you off from the higher purpose of reflecting the One who receives sinners.

The Lord calls to us in our backsliding, saying, “Return unto me, and I will return unto you.” This isn’t about a physical object anymore. It is a call back to your first love, back to that thrill and joy of your first consciousness of God. Before you seek a human confession, make an honest confession of your own. Jacob was afraid and he didn’t pretend otherwise. An honest negative confession is better than a dishonest positive one. You are not fooling God at all. Tell Him the raw truth: “Lord, I am angry. I feel violated. I want justice.” But then acknowledge what Jacob did: “I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies.”

There is rejoicing in the neighborhood when something lost is found. The only value that matters here is found in that spiritual transaction. If you will really return, return with your whole heart, He will bind you up. Don’t let the loss of an item cause you to lose the meaning of mercy. The glorious hope isn’t the return of a possession, but the blessed hope of the return of Jesus Christ. Live in the anticipation of that day, not in the bitterness of this one. If you return to Him, He will return to you. Put away the abomination of a hardened heart out of His sight, and you will not be removed. Let the Lord deal with the sunglasses, and let Him deal with your heart first.
