I keep doomscrolling

We hear your honest confession about doomscrolling and the insecurity that drives it, and we join with you in bringing this struggle before the Lord together in Jesus' name. We understand how easily this habit can take hold, how one search or one scroll leads to another, and how it can leave us feeling more anxious, empty, and insecure than before. You are not alone in this, and we are grateful you reached out for prayer.

The Word shows us that what we feed our minds shapes our hearts. When we constantly consume fearful or unsettling content, we can become conformed to the anxiety of this world rather than transformed by God's truth. Romans 12:2 says Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. And Philippians 4:8 teaches us Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things. Doomscrolling often does the opposite, fixing our thoughts on what is fearful and uncertain. God also reminds us of our worth in Him when insecurity rises. Psalm 139:14 says I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your value is not found in what you see online or in how you compare yourself to others, but in being created and deeply loved by God. He also calls us to steward our time wisely, as Ephesians 5:15-16 says Therefore watch carefully how you walk, not as unwise, but as wise; redeeming the time, because the days are evil.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share why this is so important. It is only through Jesus that we have access to God and that our prayers are heard. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not yet put your trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior, we encourage you to believe in Him, that He died for your sins and rose again, and to call upon His name. It is through Him that we find forgiveness, peace, and the power to overcome.

We want to encourage you with practical steps as we pray for you. We urge you to bring this habit into the light, perhaps with a trusted Christian brother or sister for accountability, and to set clear boundaries for your phone and media use. When the urge to scroll comes, we encourage you to instead take every thought captive as 2 Corinthians 10:5 teaches, and to replace that moment with prayer or Scripture. God has not given us a spirit of fear, as 2 Timothy 1:7 says For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control, and He invites us to cast our anxieties on Him. 1 Peter 5:7 says casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. And Philippians 4:6-7 promises In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

We now pray together for you. Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this dear one to You. Lord, You see the insecurity and the restlessness that leads to constant scrolling, and You know the weariness it brings. We ask You to forgive us for the times we have sought comfort and answers from the world instead of from You. Grant this dear one Your power, love, and self-control to turn away from this habit. Renew their mind with Your truth and help them to dwell on what is true and pure and lovely. Heal the insecurity at its root and remind them that they are fearfully and wonderfully made and fully loved in Christ. Teach them to redeem their time and to find peace as they cast every worry on You. Fill them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding and guard their heart and thoughts in Christ Jesus. Draw them closer to Jesus each day and give them strength to walk in freedom. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We appreciate you reaching out and naming this so honestly. Doomscrolling when you feel insecure makes a lot of sense, it feels like you are looking for reassurance or answers, but it often leaves you feeling more on edge and more unsure of yourself afterward.

We are glad you asked for prayer, and we want you to know you are not alone in this struggle. Many of us know how hard it is to put the phone down once that cycle starts.

One small step that has helped others is to give the habit a clear boundary instead of relying on willpower in the moment. You might choose one practical limit for this week, like setting a daily time limit on the apps you scroll most, keeping your phone out of the bedroom at night, or deciding to leave it in another room during meals or before bed and doing something simple with your hands and mind instead, like taking a short walk, making tea, or talking with someone nearby. If the urge feels strong, noticing it and pausing for a minute before you unlock the phone can also break the automatic loop.

We are praying for you and care about you.

Father, we bring our friend to You and ask for Your peace and steady presence to guard their heart and mind. Help them to know how deeply they are seen and loved by You, and give them wisdom and strength as they take small steps away from scrolling and toward rest. Lead them in Your kindness day by day. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is much tenderness in your honest confession, and I have taken your request before the Lord with care.

That restless scrolling which feeds insecurity is a habit many know too well, and you are right to see it as something to be brought into the light. As I have often said to those given to worrying and fretting, have you ever made any profit by doing so? Anxiety has never comforted any soul, nor brought any grist to the mill. And more than that, the very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. To doomscroll is to drink again from a well that never satisfies, and it leaves the soul more weary and more unsure than before.

Your insecurity is not met by seeing more of what unsettles you, but by seeing more of Him in whom you may be secure. One main help to the believer is the habit of always making faith the most prominent point of consideration, to be able to say, I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him. There is a sacred anxiety which examines whether we are in the faith, and a holy filial fear that desires to please God, but the fretting that keeps you scrolling is not that. It is a burden the Lord never asked you to carry alone.

I pray for you now, that the Lord will give you grace to turn from that endless searching to seeking Him. May He show you your worth and your keeping in Christ, who surrounds His people as the mountains surround Jerusalem. May He help you to commit your cares and your sense of self into His able hands, and to find that He is able to keep what you entrust to Him. May He give you wisdom to set bounds to this habit, to redeem the hours, and to fill your mind with what is true and lovely and of good report, so that peace may guard your heart.

You are not alone in this struggle, and the Lord who sees you in secret is able to give you both forgiveness and strength for each day. I will continue to pray that He will quiet your heart, establish you in His love, and make faith, rather than fear, the daily habit of your soul.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
