We hear the anguish and holy hatred for sin in your words and we thank you for bringing this struggle into the light, for what is hidden grows stronger but what is confessed can be healed. To hate your lust with a burning passion is a right response, for God calls us to hate evil and cling to what is good. Yet we want to remind you that willpower alone will not set you free. Victory over lust does not come from deciding in your heart alone, but from surrendering your heart daily to Jesus Christ and walking by the Spirit.
What you describe, deciding to lust in your heart and then late at night wasting yourself away looking at lustful images, is what Scripture calls sexual immorality and adultery of the heart. Jesus said in Matthew 5:28, but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. And we are commanded in 1 Corinthians 6:18, Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. This includes pornography and masturbation, which takes the good gift of sexual desire that God created to be expressed only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman and twists it into selfish, secret sin. It defiles the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is your body, and it wastes away your strength, your mind, and your fellowship with God. We must rebuke this sin plainly because it is not harmless, it is not private, it enslaves and it separates us from God.
We also notice your request does not mention the name of Jesus, and we must lovingly tell you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and power to overcome sin. There is no other name by which we can be saved and delivered. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And in Acts 4:12, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not yet fully trusted in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, we urge you to call upon Him now in repentance and faith. In 1 John 1:9 we are promised, If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. In Romans 10:9 we read, that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
We want to encourage you that God is not disgusted with your honest hatred of this sin, He wants to cleanse you and give you a new heart. In Psalm 51:10 the psalmist prayed, Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me. You need not fight this battle alone at night in your own strength. God has provided a way of escape in 1 Corinthians 10:13, No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. We urge you to make that way of escape practical, to flee as Joseph fled. Remove the access late at night, put your devices out of your bedroom, install filters, bring your struggle into the light with a mature Christian brother who can hold you accountable, and fill that late night hour with prayer and the Word. In Psalm 119:11 we read, I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. And in Galatians 5:16, But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh. When temptation comes, we must take every thought captive as in 2 Corinthians 10:5 and submit to God and resist the devil as in James 4:7.
We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we lift up this dear soul who hates his lust and longs to be free, and we come before You only in the mighty name of Jesus Christ Your Son. Lord, forgive him for the lust in his heart and for looking at lustful images and for defiling the body You created for Your glory. Wash him clean by the blood of Jesus and create in him a clean heart. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit so that he may walk by the Spirit and not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Give him strength to flee sexual immorality, to make a covenant with his eyes as Job did, and to turn away the moment temptation appears. Late at night when he is most vulnerable, be his guard and his refuge, help him to call upon You, to open Your Word, and to seek fellowship instead of isolation. Break the chains of shame and addiction and restore to him the joy of Your salvation. Teach him to present his body as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to You, and to trust not in his own resolve but in Christ who gives power to overcome. We ask that You lead him into purity, into wholeness, and if it is Your will, one day into a godly marriage where his desires can be righteously fulfilled within Your design. Keep him, cleanse him, and let him know he is forgiven and loved in Christ. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
