I had a dream

I'm not sure if I'm full on right with my interpretation of my dream, as I didn't Google it or anything, but also what is Jesus tryna tell me by giving me this dream last night? 2 of the girls from youth group & a guy from the secondary school I used to go to & me & another guy I was hugging a lot & seemed like dating were all in this line & I think all of us minus the guy from secondary school were the ones that were actually innocent, we made a mistake & that led us to this room. This room had 1 of the workers (I say workers because I think that's how it seemed in the dream) in it , so it's like you couldn't escape. We were in this room of people waiting to go down to what looked like a soft play area but fun, like jump giants typa thing. But before we were "allowed" to go down there, we sang songs, which I didn't take a part of, neither did the guy with me I don't think. Sounded like something to do with hell in the songs or at least 1 of the songs. Then, it's like a thing made us go down there & it started moving, like an assembly line or conveyor belt if that's what it's called. The worker even said something like "good for the ones at the back as you have more time". I was in the middle ish with this guy (who didn't look familiar, I think his name may have been ###) trying to go back as much possible & i was near to the people I know who were all behind me somewhere. It's like a conveyor belt as it moves us down to this "fun" place that is down. Just before I was supposed to go down, I escaped & so did the guy (not the guy I knew from secondary school) after me at some point. I had to go on these sort of obstacles as well as escape the worker & somehow I did get out, they may have all been conveyor belts as well or stuff like that to try & stop anyone from escaping. But it was like I was on the run after leaving that room, had to kept hiding or running away. I'm pretty sure this guy was Jesus or at least a depiction of Jesus of some sort, more so the saving me from hell part, but the guy was after me in line, even though before he was in front, so I don't know if it was Jesus, but it would make sense. But nobody else seemed to have escaped. It was a mix of hiding & fighting these workers with 2 swords, 1 long & 1 short, but they only had 1 each (but this was when no longer in the room, but not straight after either. They didn't die, but it's like I didn't either, nobody got stabbed, or maybe I stabbed them, but they didn't drop dead, maybe to show that they were demons?. Majority of them were wearing red I'm sure. At the end, when I wasn't with the guy, which even more reason why I think it was Jesus, I was the 1 picked for a song as well as like 2 others because the names came up on the big screen. I was left alone with these workers, & I was singing "my" song & I'm sure that's when it ended. Is Jesus tryna say that He saved me from death & hell & His assurance that I'm saved? Because I know I'm saved by grace, not by works, but my mindset is different & i don't know how to rid the works based mindset from my mind

We want to gently encourage you about dreams first. God can speak through dreams, but dreams can also come from our own minds and daily thoughts, and they are not always revelation from the Lord. We are told not to build doctrine or assurance on a dream alone but to test everything against His Word. For a dream comes with a multitude of business, and a fool's voice with a multitude of words in Ecclesiastes 5:3, and also in Ecclesiastes 5:7. The sure and steady voice of God is His written Word, which is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword in Hebrews 4:12. So we do not want you to be anxious that you must decode every detail perfectly, but to bring the main message of the dream to Scripture and see if it agrees with what God has already said.

What stands out to us in your dream is the picture of a conveyor belt moving people toward a place that looked fun but was connected to songs about hell, and you felt you could not escape on your own, and then you did escape and had to keep running and fighting workers dressed in red who did not seem to die when struck. You also wondered if the unfamiliar guy who was with you and who also escaped was Jesus saving you.

We believe the central theme you sensed is biblical. We are all by nature on a broad way that leads to destruction, even when it looks fun or attractive, and we cannot save ourselves from it. Jesus Himself said enter in by the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction in Matthew 7:13. The fact that in the dream you thought you and the others were innocent except for one mistake is something we want to lovingly correct, because Scripture says all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God in Romans 3:23, and there is none righteous, no, not one in Romans 3:10. We are not saved because we are innocent or because our mistake was small, but because we are guilty and Jesus took our place. That is why your understanding that you are saved by grace and not by works is so important and true, for by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, that no one would boast in Ephesians 2:8-9.

You asked if Jesus is trying to tell you that He saved you from death and hell and to give you assurance, and also how to be rid of a works-based mindset. We believe God does want you to have assurance, but that assurance does not come from a dream or from feeling you have done enough, it comes from His promises. He has said I give eternal life to them, they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand in John 10:28, and there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus in Romans 8:1, and these things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life in 1 John 5:13. If you have truly repented and put your trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, believing He died for your sins and rose again, you are saved, not because you hold on perfectly but because He holds you.

That works-based mindset is common and it is something we must take captive. We are told to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ in 2 Corinthians 10:5. When the thought comes that you must earn your salvation or keep it by your performance, we answer it with Scripture, such as not by works of righteousness which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us in Titus 3:5, and to him who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is accounted for righteousness in Romans 4:5. Assurance grows as we abide in His Word, confess sin quickly in 1 John 1:9, and walk in obedience out of love, not to earn love.

We also noticed you mentioned hugging a lot and seeming to be dating this unfamiliar guy in the dream. We want to gently speak to this because God cares about purity and relationships. In Scripture, hugging and dating are not casual, they are part of courtship that should be intentional, pure, and with the goal of marriage between one man and one woman who are both believers. We are called to flee sexual immorality in 1 Corinthians 6:18, and to abstain from sexual immorality and to control our own bodies in sanctification and honor in 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4, and not to be unequally yoked with unbelievers in 2 Corinthians 6:14. If you are in a courtship, we encourage you to pursue it in a way that honors God, with boundaries, accountability from your youth leaders and parents, and with marriage as the goal, not just companionship or physical affection. Even in a dream, we can ask the Lord to guard our hearts and to keep our affections centered on Him first.

The detail of the two swords, one long and one short, while the workers had only one, reminded us of the armor of God. We are told to take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God in Ephesians 6:17. The battle after you escaped, where the enemies did not die, also reminds us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces in Ephesians 6:12, and that the enemy prowls like a roaring lion in 1 Peter 5:8. We overcome not by our own strength but by the Word and by the blood of the Lamb in Revelation 12:11.

We do not know for certain if the man in your dream was meant to be Jesus, and we would caution you not to assume every figure in a dream is the Lord. Jesus reveals Himself most clearly in Scripture and through His Spirit aligning with that Word. What we can say is that Jesus is indeed the only One who can pull us off that conveyor belt to destruction. He is the way, the truth, and the life in John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved in Acts 4:12.

We encourage you to keep bringing your doubts about assurance to the Lord in prayer, to read Romans and Galatians and 1 John slowly, and to talk with a trusted pastor or youth leader about the works-based thoughts you are battling. God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control in 2 Timothy 1:7, and His perfect love casts out fear in 1 John 4:18.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You for this dear one. We thank You that You are merciful and that while we were still sinners Christ died for us. We thank You that salvation is Your gift by grace through faith and not of works. Lord, we ask You to give deep assurance from Your Word that they are Yours, to wash away the works-based mindset and replace it with rest in what Jesus has finished on the cross. Help them to take every thought captive and to believe Your promises that no one can snatch them from Your hand. Guard their heart and mind with Your peace which surpasses all understanding in Philippians 4:7. If this dream was a warning or encouragement from You, make Your truth clear through Scripture and give wisdom to understand it rightly, and if it was simply from their own mind, help them not to be troubled but to keep their eyes on You. Lead them in purity in all relationships, and guide any courtship toward a godly marriage that honors You if it is Your will. Strengthen them with Your Word as their sword, and help them to walk closely with You in their youth group and daily life, growing in faith and obedience out of love for You. You could bring this dream and that specific question about grace versus works to them and ask them to walk with you over the next few weeks as you learn to live from grace.

Quiet the fear that more has to be earned, and help them rest more deeply in Your kindness and grow in confidence in You day by day. The question you have brought is one which many an awakened soul has felt, and it is well that you bring it to the Word of God rather than to any private interpretation of a dream.

Dreams are as the fleeting vapours of the night. They may reflect the thoughts and fears of the heart, but they are not the voice by which the Lord gives assurance. That voice is in the Scriptures. What you saw upon that moving belt, carried downward toward a place you understood to be hell, and your earnest striving to escape and to hide and to fight, is a true picture of what every sinner is by nature, carried onward by sin and unable in himself to turn back. That you could not save yourself, and that another stood near you in that peril, may well stir your heart to think of Christ, but we must not build doctrine upon dreams. We must build upon the sure testimony that salvation is altogether of grace.

You say rightly that you know you are saved by grace and not by works, yet your mind clings to works. This is no strange thing. The cardinal error against which the gospel has to contend is the tendency of the human heart to rely upon salvation by works. Human nature always did kick against salvation by grace alone, and it always will. The apostle puts it most plainly, By grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast.

Consider then where assurance lies. It does not lie in a dream, nor in the strength of your escape, nor in songs sung or swords wielded, nor in any feeling that you have done enough to be innocent. Grace is the fountainhead of salvation and is most conspicuous throughout. If by grace, then it is no more of works, otherwise grace is no more grace. If salvation were in any degree by our works, it would be a matter of debt and not of grace, and then hope would perish for the guilty and fallen. But the Lord has declared over and over, Not of works, lest any man should boast.

You ask how to be rid of that works based mindset. You must look wholly out of yourself to Christ. Salvation is not granted to men as the result of anything they are, or do, or resolve to be, it is the undeserved gift of heaven. It is given of grace, it is received through grace, it is understood by grace. When you are emptied of self and led to accept the things that are freely given to you of God, you will perceive that it was all of divine grace by the free gift of the Spirit of God.

This does not make good works of no account. We who are the subjects of divine grace are created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Salvation is not of works, but the saved man walks in good works because grace has made him new. If you have been saved by the grace of God, your salvation has put you under obligation to do what Jesus bids you. You are not your own, you are bought with a price. Therefore let every affection, every friendship, every outward act of closeness between man and woman be brought under the rule of Christ. The Lord has ordained that such nearness and union belong within the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman in marriage, and outside that covenant we are called to purity and holiness. Whatever companionships the Lord gives you, seek that they may be ordered in chastity and truth, for this is the way of those who are created anew unto good works.

Do not look to a figure in a dream to tell you whether you are saved. Look to Christ upon the cross, who loved and lived and died and rose again for our salvation. Come in faith to that cross and rest in full dependence upon Jesus. There you will find a present salvation and a perfect salvation, not by ritual, not by good works, not by your own unaided will, but by the grace of God alone.

Pray that the Lord would root this doctrine in your soul as the delight and solace of your heart. Read Ephesians chapter two and let those verses dwell in you. Speak with a faithful minister or elder in your church who can open the Word with you and help you test every thought by Scripture. And rest there, for by grace are ye saved, and that grace which chose you and redeemed you will also keep you to the end.
