Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing this honestly and for asking for prayer. What you are experiencing is common to all people, and being tempted is not itself sin. Even Jesus was tempted, yet without sin. Sin comes when desire is allowed to conceive and we yield to it and follow the path that is suggested to us.
It helps to understand where temptation comes from. God does not solicit anyone to evil. That solicitation comes from the enemy, and it works through our own desires. Often it presents itself as an offer of immediate fulfillment if we will just step aside from God's path for a moment. When you are bored, that quietness can become the very opening where the suggestion feels strongest, because the flesh looks for something to satisfy it right now.
Scripture describes the things of this fallen world in three ways, the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life. These are not from the Father, they are from the world, and the world with its desires is passing away. Only the one who does the will of God will remain forever. That is why lust can never truly be satisfied. The worst thing you can do with it is feed it, because it will always demand more until it masters you. The only cure is to starve it, to deny the flesh its indulgence.
The battle is really for the control of your mind and heart. God wants to lead your life, and the enemy wants to lead it by deceit and force. You have a choice in each temptation whether you will walk according to the flesh or according to the Spirit. In Christ you have been given a new position. You are counted dead with Christ and alive to God, risen with Him. You do not have to be mastered by the flesh any longer, though the temptation will still come.
God is faithful and has promised that no temptation has overtaken you except what is common to humanity, and He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able to bear. With every temptation He makes a way of escape so that you can endure it. He will provide the way, but you must take it. That means deciding quickly not to linger, to turn away, to call on Him, and to fill your mind with something else that is of Him.
Jesus showed us the power of the Word in temptation. To each appeal to flesh, to sight, and to pride, He answered, it is written. Hiding Scripture in your heart is a guard against sin. When boredom comes, do not leave your mind empty and open. Fill that time intentionally with the Word, with prayer, with useful work and service to others, and with fellowship that strengthens you. If you sense the urge rising, take the escape God provides right then. Get up, turn off what tempts you, go to another place, open the Bible, pray aloud, call a trusted believer.
I am praying for you now that God will give you strength and victory in Jesus Christ.
Father, in the name of Jesus I lift up this one who has asked for help. Thank you that you know this struggle and that you are faithful. I ask that you would give power to choose the Spirit and not the flesh, to reckon this life dead to sin and alive to you. Fill the mind with your Word and guard the heart. When temptation comes, make the way of escape clear and give courage to take it quickly. Teach how to starve what would destroy and to hunger instead for what is holy. Bring patience and steadiness while waiting on you, and replace boredom with purpose and joy in your presence. Let there be growing victory in this area, so that what once felt uncontrollable is brought under your gracious control. Keep this one close to Jesus and strengthen faith day by day. Amen.
You are not alone in this fight, and God desires to give you real victory. Keep bringing this to Him honestly, stay in the Word daily, and do not hesitate to keep asking for prayer and accountability as you walk this out.
