We hear your honest confession and we thank you for bringing this struggle into the light, for you have done what Scripture calls us to do in bringing temptation before the Lord and before others for prayer and accountability.
We want to speak plainly with you about this, because lustful urges, even when they arise from boredom, are not harmless thoughts to be managed but sinful desires of the flesh that must be repented of and fled from. Our Lord Jesus said in Matt 5:28 that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. And Scripture warns us in James 1:14-15 that each man is tempted when he is drawn away by his own lust and enticed. Then the lust, when it has conceived, bears sin. The sin, when it is full grown, produces death. Boredom does not excuse lust, but it does reveal an open door of idleness that the enemy will use if we do not redeem our time and fill our minds with Christ.
God created sexual desire as good, but He ordained it to be fulfilled only within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, as we read in Heb 13:4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. Any sexual thought, image, or act outside of that marriage covenant, including lustful fantasies, pornography, and masturbation, is fornication and must be turned from. We are called not to feed the flesh but to walk by the Spirit.
We rejoice that you desire to overcome these urges with the power of Jesus, for that is the only way to victory. In our own strength we will fail, but through Christ we can be made new. We are told in 1 Cor 10:13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. And in Gal 5:16 we are instructed, I say, walk by the Spirit, and you won’t fulfill the lust of the flesh.
We encourage you to take practical and spiritual steps to fight this battle. Flee also youthful lusts, but pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart as we are told in 2 Tim 2:22. That means fleeing, not flirting with temptation. Turn off and remove sources of temptation, put filters on devices, avoid being alone with idle time and unfiltered internet access, and bring a trusted Christian brother or pastor into your struggle for accountability. Redeem the time given to you, for the days are evil as Eph 5:16 says. When boredom comes, choose to be diligent in work, in service, in prayer, and in the Word, for whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord in Col 3:23. Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ as in 2 Cor 10:5 and replace lustful thoughts with what is pure, as Phil 4:8 says, Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is any praise, think about these things. Be subject therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you in James 4:7.
We are praying together for you now.
Father, we come before Your throne in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we lift up our brother who is battling lustful urges in times of boredom. Lord, we confess with him that lust is sin and we ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing through the blood of Jesus. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit and give him strength to flee sexual immorality, for Your Word says in 1 Cor 6:18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Renew his mind, Lord, and transform him by the renewing of his mind in Rom 12:2 that he may not be conformed to this world. When temptation comes, show him the way of escape that You have promised, and help him to walk by the Spirit. Give him a love for Your Word, a discipline in prayer, and a willingness to work diligently for Your glory so that idleness has no place. Guard his eyes and his heart, and help him to pursue purity and holiness, for without holiness no one will see You. We thank You that through Jesus we have victory and that Your grace is sufficient to help him overcome. Keep him close to You and let his life bring honor to Your name. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
We encourage you to stay in daily prayer and in the Scriptures, to fast as the Lord leads, to worship, and to stay in fellowship with other believers who will strengthen you. If you fall, do not stay in shame, but quickly confess, repent, and return to the Lord who is faithful to forgive in 1 John 1:9. God is able to make you stand and to give you self-control as fruit of His Spirit in Gal 5:22-23. We are standing with you for complete victory in Christ.
