We hear the deep pain and weariness in your cry and we stand with you together before the Lord lifting up your marriage and your family. For years you have carried this burden five days and nights a week and we know the Lord sees your tears and hears your prayers. He is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit as Psalm 34:18 reminds us, and we join our faith with yours for your husband's deliverance and for healing in your home.
We want to speak the truth in love about what the Bible says concerning drunkenness because God loves your husband and desires to set him free. Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler, whoever is led astray by them is not wise, Proverbs 20:1. And we are commanded do not be drunken with wine in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, Ephesians 5:18. Drunkenness is not merely a habit or a sickness but sin that enslaves the will and harms the precious covenant of marriage which God ordained as a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman. It dulls the spirit, wounds the family, and opens the door to further destruction, for the enemy prowls seeking whom he may devour and we are called to be sober and self-controlled, 1 Peter 5:8. Yet we also hold fast to hope, for such were some of you, but you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, 1 Corinthians 6:11. What sin has bound, Christ can break, for if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and no temptation has taken you except what is common to man, but God is faithful who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, 1 Corinthians 10:13.
We also want to gently encourage you concerning how you have prayed. You cried out Please Lord and we know your heart is turned toward God, yet we want to remind you that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and it is only by that name we are saved. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me, John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. So we pray to the Father in the name of Jesus, trusting in His shed blood and resurrection, and we encourage you to continually bring your petitions in the name of Jesus with confidence that He intercedes for you, Hebrews 7:25.
We pray together for you and for your husband now.
Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and we lift up this dear sister and her husband and their family to You. Lord, You see the years of pain, the nights of drinking, the damage done to this marriage and to this home. We ask You to break the chains of addiction that bind this husband. Convict his heart deeply by Your Holy Spirit, open his eyes to see what this sin is doing to his own body which is meant to be a temple of Your Spirit, to his wife whom he vowed to love and cherish, and to his family. Grant him godly sorrow that leads to repentance, 2 Corinthians 7:10, and give him a hunger for sobriety and self-control which is fruit of Your Spirit, Galatians 5:22-23. Deliver him from the desire for strong drink and fill him instead with Your Spirit. We pray for this wife, Lord, strengthen her when she is weary, for You have promised that those who wait for You will renew their strength, Isaiah 40:31. Give her wisdom to love without enabling, to speak truth without bitterness, to set godly boundaries and to seek wise counsel from her pastor and from mature believers in the church. Surround her with support, with prayer warriors who will not grow weary in well doing, Galatians 6:9, and let her know she is not alone. We pray for this marriage, Lord, restore what has been broken, bring honesty, forgiveness, and renewed commitment. Lead this husband to humble himself, to confess his sin, to seek accountability and help, and to walk in newness of life. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our only hope, amen.
We encourage you to continue steadfast in prayer and to not carry this alone. Share this burden with a trusted pastor or godly older women in your church, James 5:16, and encourage your husband in love to seek help and accountability, both spiritual and practical, for overcoming this bondage. Fast and pray as you are able, keep your own heart guarded in the Word, and trust that God is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, Ephesians 3:20. We are praying with you for his complete freedom and for the restoration of joy and peace in your marriage.
