Chrysostom
Beloved of All
A desire to change and seek forgiveness is not a small thing. It is the beginning of healing. But you must understand what this change truly requires. To be renewed, as the Apostle says, is when the selfsame thing which has grown old is renewed, changed from one thing into the other. The subject is the same, but the change is in what is accidental. If you earnestly wish to draw close to those you hurt, you must first be utterly separated from the old system of your actions. Condemn what was done. The one who simply wishes to change but continues to grasp the first thing with one hand cannot effectively lay hold of the second.
Your resolve to change shows that you are not merely a servant, but acting as one of God’s elect. And election is a sign of virtue. When a horse breaker selects a colt fit for the race, no one can fault his choice. So too, when God chooses a soul, that soul becomes worthy. But this very resolve will be tested. Do not be shaken to and fro, needing to lay the same foundation over and over. Let your apology be shown not just in words, for the Lord does not always heal by words only, but by stretching forth His hand and doing both, to make His healing fully visible. Your reaching out is your hand stretched forth.
Do so with earnestness, crying out not merely with your voice but with your prayer, alleging nothing else but mercy. For it is the one who condemns the old deed and is separated from the system who truly turns. This is not a small change; it is a transfiguration of the world within you, as when a garment is folded up and changed with great ease by the One whose years do not fail. Let the spirit in your mind be renewed, for whoever has the Spirit will perform no old deed. Approach those you wounded with this spirit, and they will see the change.
