How would we forget?

In Revelation we're told "The former things will not come to mind". And we've heard many times that there are no negative thoughts in Heaven. However, I wonder how this is done, if we have memories. Will God give us amnesia, like wipe out our memories?

What a profound question about the eternal state of believers in the presence of our Lord! The promise you’re referring to is found in Isaiah 65:17, where God declares, *"For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former things will not be remembered, nor come into mind."* This is echoed in Revelation 21:4, where we’re told, *"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; neither will there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more. The first things have passed away."*

The question of how God will remove the pain of past memories while preserving our identity is a beautiful mystery that points to His perfect redemption. We don’t believe God will erase our memories entirely—after all, we will still recognize one another (1 Corinthians 13:12) and recall God’s faithfulness throughout history. But the *sting* of sorrow, the weight of sin, and the scars of this fallen world will be gone. How? Because in His presence, all things are made new. The pain of the past will no longer have power over us. The memories that once brought grief will be transformed by the glory of Christ, just as our bodies will be transformed into incorruptible, glorified forms (1 Corinthians 15:42-44).

Think of it like this: when Jesus was resurrected, He still bore the marks of the nails (John 20:27), yet those wounds no longer caused Him pain. They were now signs of victory, not suffering. In the same way, our memories will be redeemed—not erased, but perfected. The brokenness of this life will be swallowed up in the joy of eternity with our Savior.

Let’s pray together for a deeper trust in God’s promise of restoration:

*"Heavenly Father, we thank You that in Christ, all things are being made new. The sorrows of this life often feel overwhelming, and the weight of past sins or hurts can linger in our minds. But Your Word promises that one day, the former things will not even come to mind—the pain will be gone, the tears wiped away, and every memory will be bathed in the light of Your glory. Lord, we ask for faith to believe this fully. Help us to release the burdens of the past into Your hands, trusting that You will redeem even our memories for Your glory. Let us live today with our eyes fixed on the hope of that perfect day when we will see You face to face, and all things will be made right. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Redeemer, who has already conquered sin and death. Amen."*

Friend, cling to this hope: the God who created your mind is the same God who will perfect it. The memories that now bring pain will one day be part of a story of His unfailing love—a story with no more tears, no more regret, only endless worship and joy in His presence. *"He who sits on the throne said, ‘Behold, I am making all things new.’"* (Revelation 21:5). That includes you.

We've been pondering this too, haven't we? It's a mystery, this life after, but isn't it beautiful to imagine? We won't forget because God doesn't want us to, not really. He wants us to remember His faithfulness, His love, even through the hard times. It's like when we look at our hands, we see the lines, the marks of our journey, but they don't hurt anymore. They're just a part of who we are, a testament to where we've been.

Bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to trust You with all my heart, acknowledge You in all my ways, and lean not to my own understanding.

God heal me in every area of my life. Deliver and cleanse me of everything in my life that doesn't honor You. Transform and renew my mind. Bless me with love, power, and a sound mind. Let the mind that is in Christ Jesus be in me. Bless me to have and operate with a God solution focused heart, mind, spirit, and attitude. Bless me to have a God Kingdom Culture Mentality. God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. God, all that I have asked of You, in this prayer, please do the same for the writer of the prayer, all those who love and care about me, and all those I love and care about. We want to thank you for allowing us to join you in prayer as you seek understanding about the glorious hope we have in eternity. It has been a blessing to lift your questions before the Lord, asking Him to reveal His truth in ways that bring peace to your heart and deepen your trust in His perfect plan. The mysteries of heaven are far beyond our earthly comprehension, yet we serve a God who promises that one day, every tear will be wiped away and every sorrow will fade in the light of His presence.
