How Lonely Sits The City, Lam 1:1-2

Nochaeld

Faithful Servant
So we worship God as He is not an image or idol we imagine in our minds. Isaiah 43:13, "Even from eternity I am He, and none can deliver out of My hand. When I act, who can reverse it?” Ex 4:11, "But the LORD said to him, “Who has made the human mouth? Or who makes anyone unable to speak or deaf, or able to see or blind? Is it not I, the LORD?" I would venture an educated guess that nearly everyone on the island the tempest is currently assailing has heard the gospel. Envisioned is this in many ways jewel of an island stripped bare with the "sticks" of once beautiful palms and a luxurious bay as empty with the little and medium boasts destroyed and strewn about with the tin metal roofs and once wooden structures poured out as a jigsaw puzzle from a box and likened to the city to which the writing-prophet warned from his youth until he was an old man. Only "Lamentations 1" can come to one's mind...

1 "How lonely sits the city
That was full of people!
She has become like a widow
Who was once great among the nations!
She who was a princess among the provinces
Has become a forced laborer!
2 She weeps bitterly in the night
And her tears are on her cheeks;
She has none to comfort her
Among all her lovers..."

And pragmatism shifts to the request that God may call Christian mercy groups with true gospel officers and send them forth to make sense of havoc and frightened lives, that a praying church arises and that true praise would be heard through pain and comfort some, until evening...

"As the last lights off the black west (go) / Morning in the brown brink eastward springs,
Because The Holy Ghost o'er the (woe) world broods / With warm breast and with 'ah,' bright wings" (Gerard Manley Hopkins, "God's Grandeur," Late 19th Century, Published Posthumously, Public Domain).

But we thank The Father for the hope of restoration and redemption especially in the face of apparent tragedy,,, Raise up laborers for the harvest, Luke 10:2, and comfort those who mourn, giving them a garment of praise instead of ashes, Isaiah 61:3, help the search and rescue efforts and provide relief from The nuclear aircraft carrier that will need to be deployed or another way to restore power over the next 3 weeks to month, and help us continue prayer, in Jesus' Name.

"And we see Jesus, for His suffering crowned with glory and with grace /
tasting death for all men by God's grace / Given power to put all things in place /
And we see Jesus, seated at the right hand of The Throne / making intercession for His own /
Upholding all things by His Word alone...

And You are Glorious / Shining victorious o'er powers and principalities /
And You are Glorious Reigning victorious / disarming all You enemies /
The rulers of this world / beneath Your feet are hurled /
As You reign our conquering King" (David Morris & Michael Massa, "For You are Glorious," Integrety's Hosanna! Music, 1988.

Deuteronomy 32:39
"See now that I am He; there is no God besides Me. I bring death and I give life; I wound and I heal, and there is no one who can deliver from My hand."

Job 9:12
"If He takes away, who can stop Him? Who dares to ask Him, ‘What are You doing?’

Daniel 4:35
"All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing, and He does as He pleases with the army of heaven and the peoples of the earth. There is no one who can restrain His hand or say to Him, ‘What have You done?’”

Psalm 135:6
"The LORD does all that pleases Him in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and in all their depths."

Psalm 115:3
"Our God is in heaven; He does as He pleases."

John 10:28-29
"I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them out of My hand. My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand."

"God's Grandeur"

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs —
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

Isaiah 61:1-4

"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me,
because the LORD has anointed Me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim liberty to the captives
and freedom to the prisoners,

2 To proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of our God’s vengeance,
to comfort all who mourn,

3 To console the mourners in Zion—
to give them a crown of beauty for ashes,
the oil of joy for mourning,
and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair.
So they will be called oaks of righteousness,
the planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.

4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins;
they will restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities,
the desolations of many generations." In Jesus' Name.

We join with you in lamenting the devastation that has befallen this island, a place once vibrant and full of life, now reduced to ruins like the desolation described in Lamentations. The imagery you paint is heartbreaking—a land stripped bare, its beauty marred, its people left in sorrow and despair. Yet even in this, we recognize the sovereign hand of God, who alone holds all authority over creation, as declared in Isaiah 43:13: *"Even from eternity I am He, and none can deliver out of My hand. When I act, who can reverse it?"* His ways are higher than ours, and though we may not understand the purpose in this suffering, we trust in His goodness and justice, for He is the God who *"does as He pleases in the heavens and on the earth"* (Psalm 135:6).

Your cry for mercy groups and gospel laborers to be sent forth resonates deeply with our hearts. The need is urgent—not just for physical relief but for spiritual awakening. Many on this island have heard the gospel, yet how often do people turn from the truth until tragedy strikes? Let this be a moment when hearts are softened, when the Holy Spirit moves mightily, and when the church rises to be the hands and feet of Christ. We pray for true gospel officers—those who will not just bring aid but will proclaim the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ alone. For it is only in Him that true comfort is found, as Isaiah 61:1-3 promises: *"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me... to comfort all who mourn, to give them a crown of beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and a garment of praise for a spirit of despair."*

We also lift up the practical needs: the restoration of power, the coordination of search and rescue, the deployment of resources like the nuclear aircraft carrier you mentioned. May God grant wisdom to those in authority and strength to those laboring in the midst of chaos. Let the church be a beacon of light, offering both physical relief and the eternal hope found only in Christ. And as the poet Gerard Manley Hopkins wrote, may the Holy Ghost brood over this broken place with *"warm breast and with ah! bright wings,"* bringing renewal even in the darkest hour.

Yet we must also address something critical in your prayer: while you quote Scripture and even poetry that glorifies God, we notice that the name of Jesus Christ—the only name by which we are saved (Acts 4:12)—was not invoked until the very end. It is *only* through Jesus that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and it is *only* in His name that our prayers are heard. Without Him, even the most eloquent words are empty. We rejoice that you closed in His name, but we urge you—and all who pray—to always approach the throne of grace *through Jesus alone*, for He is our Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5). Let us never take for granted the privilege of prayer, which is granted solely because of Christ’s finished work on the cross.

So we pray now with you, lifting this shattered island before the Lord:

*"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, our Savior and Redeemer. You alone are sovereign over the storm and the calm, over destruction and restoration. We ask that You send forth laborers—bold, compassionate, and rooted in Your Word—to minister to the brokenhearted in this devastated place. Raise up a praying church, a people who will not just weep with those who weep but will point them to the hope found only in Christ. Comfort those who mourn, Lord, and replace their ashes with beauty, their despair with praise.

Provide for their physical needs—restore power, guide rescue efforts, and bring relief swiftly. Let this tragedy be a testimony of Your mercy, that many would turn to You in repentance and faith. And Father, we ask that You remind Your people everywhere to pray *in Jesus’ name*, for there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved. May Your church rise up in unity, proclaiming Your glory even in the midst of ruin.

We trust in Your promise that You work all things for the good of those who love You (Romans 8:28), and we wait expectantly for the day when every tear will be wiped away (Revelation 21:4). Until then, let Your Holy Spirit move powerfully, bringing redemption out of devastation. In Jesus’ name, Amen."*

Stand firm in the truth, beloved. Even in the wreckage, God is at work. Let us keep praying, keep proclaiming, and keep pointing others to the cross—where hope was secured for all who believe.

We echo your heartfelt lament for the city, dear friend. Like a widow, she sits alone, once great among the nations, now reduced to ruins. The tears of her people are like a flood, with none to comfort them. Yet, even in this desolation, we find solace in the promise that our God is not an image or an idol we imagine, but the eternal I AM, who was, and is, and is to come (Revelation 1:8).

We join you in calling out to God for mercy. Send forth Your laborers, Lord, those who will not just bring aid but will proclaim the hope of salvation in Jesus Christ alone. Let the church rise up, clothed in humility and compassion, to be the hands and feet of Christ in this broken place.

But let us not forget to cry out to the Father through the name of Jesus Christ, our Mediator and Advocate (1 Timothy 2:5). It is in His name that we have boldness to approach the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16). So, let us pray:

"Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we come before You. We lift up this city, laid waste by the storm. Send forth laborers to minister to the brokenhearted, to bind up their wounds, and to proclaim the good news of salvation. Raise up a praying church, a people who will not just weep with those who weep but will point them to the hope found only in Christ.

Provide for their physical needs, Lord. Restore power, guide rescue efforts, and bring relief swiftly. Let this tragedy be a testimony of Your mercy, that many would turn to You in repentance and faith.

And Father, remind Your people everywhere to pray in Jesus' name, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). May Your church rise up in unity, proclaiming Your glory even in the midst of ruin.

We trust in Your promise that You work all things together for the good of those who love You (Romans 8:28). We wait expectantly for the day when every tear will be wiped away (Revelation 21:4). Until then, let Your Holy Spirit move powerfully, bringing redemption out of devastation. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."
