Some reason the other one clicked to post it & I didn't mean to.

In order to love my neighbour as I myself, I need to love myself first, but how do i love myself & how do i know if I already do? How do i even know that I love God? Is it the action rather than the feeling for both cases? Is that the same for family, friends, & romantic relationships?

As Christians, we know what true love is & God is love. So how do i use that initiative? Declaring His Word, like He will never leave me nor forsake me & I'm fearfully & wonderfully made?

I've been a Christian for 3 years & ever since a young age I have always struggled with self image & loving myself. Obviously before I was a Christian, I was looking for that in the wrong things like affirmations, boys & self help books & videos. I pray for those who are looking for love in the wrong things that they find Jesus, Love loving.

How do I go about stop being insecure about my looks? I know God knitted me in my mother's womb, that He knows the number of hairs on my head & that He knows me better than I know myself, but do I believe it? With that in mind, am I supposed to just declare God's word daily, so that I actually do start believing these things?

Also, I know that God's looks at the heart & not outward appearances like we do, but I just feel that maybe to love myself is to love my neighbour. That's why I don't like saying that thing of I will love my neighbour as I love myself, because I don't think i actually love myself. I wanna treat my neighbour better, be others-centred like Christ, rather than self-centered.

Thank you to anyone who replies or prays for me, God bless you

We hear your heart, dear sister in Christ, and we stand with you in prayer and encouragement as we seek the Lord’s wisdom together. Your questions are deeply important, and we praise God for drawing you to Himself three years ago, what a beautiful work He has begun in you! Let’s walk through these matters with Scripture as our guide, trusting the Holy Spirit to illuminate truth and bring healing to your heart.

First, let’s address the foundation: how do we know we love God? The apostle John gives us clear insight: "This is love for God: to keep His commands. And His commands are not burdensome" (1 John 5:3 WEB). Love for God is not merely a feeling, though feelings may accompany it, but a deliberate choice to obey Him, even when it’s difficult. Jesus Himself said, "If you love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15 WEB). So, our love for God is proven in action, in surrender, and in daily walking in His ways. The same is true for loving others, including ourselves. Love is not just a warm emotion; it is a commitment to honor God in how we treat ourselves and those around us.

Now, loving ourselves biblically is not the self-centered, prideful love the world promotes. Rather, it is recognizing that we are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14 WEB) and that we are deeply valued by our Creator. Jesus commanded us to "love your neighbor as yourself" (Matthew 22:39 WEB), which assumes that we do, in fact, love ourselves in a healthy, God-honoring way. But how? The key is seeing ourselves through God’s eyes. You mentioned declaring Scripture, this is powerful! Romans 10:17 (WEB) tells us, "So faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." When we speak God’s truth over our lives, "I am chosen, holy, and dearly loved" (Colossians 3:12 WEB), we combat the lies of the enemy and renew our minds (Romans 12:2 WEB). This is not empty repetition; it is warfare against insecurity and self-hatred. The more we meditate on God’s Word, the more we will believe it.

You also asked about insecurity regarding your appearance. Sister, the world’s standards are fleeting and deceptive, but God’s Word is eternal and true. 1 Samuel 16:7 (WEB) reminds us, "Yahweh doesn’t see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart." Your worth is not defined by your reflection in the mirror but by the fact that Christ died for you (Romans 5:8 WEB). When you feel insecure, reject the enemy’s whispers and replace them with truth: "I am God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for good works" (Ephesians 2:10 WEB). Ask the Holy Spirit to help you see yourself as He sees you, beloved, purposeful, and beautiful in His sight.

Regarding your struggle with self-centeredness versus others-centeredness, we want to gently correct a misunderstanding. Loving yourself biblically is not selfishness; it is stewardship. You cannot pour from an empty cup. Jesus did not say, "Love your neighbor instead of yourself", He said, "as yourself." This means we must first receive God’s love for us before we can extend it to others. Think of it like an oxygen mask on an airplane: you must secure your own before helping others. When you struggle to love yourself, you may unintentionally seek validation from others or become overly critical of yourself, which can hinder your ability to love others well. But when you rest in God’s love, you can serve others from a place of overflow, not depletion.

Now, let’s address how to practically grow in self-love and confidence in Christ. Here are some steps we encourage you to take:

1. Immerse yourself in Scripture daily. Memorize verses about your identity in Christ (e.g., Ephesians 1:4-5, 1 Peter 2:9, Zephaniah 3:17). Write them on cards, speak them aloud, and let them sink into your heart.
2. Repent of self-hatred. If you have believed lies about your worth, confess them to God and ask Him to replace them with truth. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9 WEB).
3. Serve others. Paradoxically, one of the best ways to combat self-centeredness is to focus on others. Volunteer, encourage a friend, or pray for someone in need. Jesus said, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35 WEB).
4. Guard your heart. Be mindful of what you consume, social media, movies, music, that may feed insecurity or comparison. "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it" (Proverbs 4:23 WEB).
5. Pray for transformation. Ask God to help you see yourself as He sees you and to fill you with His love. "I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power... to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ" (Ephesians 3:17-18 WEB).

We also want to gently rebuke the lies you’ve believed in the past, seeking love in affirmations, boys, or self-help apart from Christ. These things cannot satisfy because they are not rooted in the One who is Love Himself (1 John 4:8 WEB). But praise God, He has rescued you from that empty pursuit! Now, you are learning to find your worth in Him alone. Keep pressing into Him, sister.

Lastly, let’s pray together:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, grateful for Your love that never fails. Lord, we lift up our sister to You, asking that You would heal her heart from the lies she has believed about herself. Help her to see herself through Your eyes, as Your beloved daughter, fearfully and wonderfully made. Fill her with Your truth and cast out every spirit of insecurity, comparison, and self-hatred. Teach her to love herself in a way that honors You, not as the world does, but as You do. May she rest in Your love and extend that love to others from a place of overflow, not lack. Strengthen her faith as she declares Your Word over her life, and let her heart be transformed by the renewing of her mind. We ask that You would continue Your good work in her, drawing her closer to You each day. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen."

Sister, you are not alone in this journey. The same God who knitted you together in your mother’s womb is walking with you now, and He is faithful to complete the work He has started in you (Philippians 1:6 WEB). Keep seeking Him, keep declaring His truth, and trust that He will lead you into greater freedom and love, for yourself and for others.

Thank you for sharing this struggle so honestly, so many of us can relate to the tension you describe. We want to love our neighbor, but we’re not sure we even love ourselves, and it all feels tangled.

You asked whether loving God and loving ourselves is about action more than feeling. In many ways, yes. Feelings can be real, but they’re not always reliable. Love for God shows itself in trusting His Word and stepping out in obedience even when warm feelings aren’t there. Loving yourself, in a healthy biblical sense, doesn’t mean having a glowing self-image all the time, it means accepting that you are valued and beloved by God because He says so, not because you’ve earned it or because you like what you see in the mirror. That’s a trust issue more than an emotion issue. So when you ask if you should declare God’s Word daily so that you actually start believing those things, you’re onto something important. But what often helps even more than just repeating verses is catching the negative thoughts as they come and gently challenging them. When you notice insecurity about your looks whispering “I’m not enough,” pause and remind yourself: “God knit me together and knows every hair on my head. He doesn’t make mistakes.” That’s not denial, it’s renewing your mind with truth, slowly retraining the way you see yourself.

You also said that maybe loving your neighbor is how you love yourself. That’s a beautiful instinct. When we pour ourselves into serving others with Christ’s love, we often find that our own preoccupations loosen their grip. So keep leaning into being others-centered, it’s not selfish to also receive God’s love in that process.

We’re praying with you now.

Lord Jesus, thank You for this honest, seeking heart. Give deep assurance of Your love that steadies every insecurity. Help with the daily practice of challenging lies with Your truth, and as they love the people around them, let them taste how fully loved they are by You. In Your name, amen.

The greater the emptiness, the more room for that which is to be the fullness! If you have no confidence in yourself, your soul is one great vacuum and you can hold more of Christ. Are you content to believe God's bare Word and to be saved by God's Word alone? He that cannot believe God's Word without wonders really fixes his belief in the wonders and not in God's Word!

Believe the more in Christ because you cannot, in any degree, believe in yourself. Its source is not in ourselves, but in love eternal, love immeasurable, love which caused itself, Free-Grace love, love to the unworthy, love to enemies, love to those who had no life, no strength, and no hope apart from Him. Christ loved us so that He deigned to join Himself to us in eternal union. In this loving union, Christ's love to us and our love to Christ flow in the same channel. We love sinners for Christ's sake! There is, in fact, but one love in the Head and in all the members.

Love must express itself in deeds. Actions speak more loudly than words. Love delights, too, in sacrifices. She rejoices in self-denials and the more costly the sacrifice, the better is love pleased to make it. Now there is such a union between every Believer and Christ as can never be destroyed! Who shall separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord? You will, as you live in full assurance of God's love, grow quite indifferent to the opinions of the carnal. That which attracted me to Christ was the doctrine of the safety of the saints. I fell in love with the Gospel through that Truth.

Do you glory in His Cross? Then it is well with you. In loving thy neighbour thou dost love thyself; for there is such a connection between him and thee, that in loving him the stream of thy love returns into thine own heart again. He has loved you right on, and never ceased to love you. He has loved you in your backslidings and loved you out of them. His loving heart was still eternally the same.

Was Jesus bound for you? Then let us be bound for Him and to Him. I rejoice in the sweet inability that results from perfect love to Christ. No salvation will ever serve your turn but one which is Divine from top to bottom! If ever you are saved, your salvation must be God's in the beginning, God's in the carrying on and God's in the concluding. Behold the righteousness of the saints, this work of Christ is making a robe in which the saints shall be arrayed.

Let me tell you, poor soul, He is our Ishi, our Husband. This name is a name of love, suggesting the mutual engagement between Christ and His people. I will love You in life, I will love You in death, and praise You as long as You lend me breath! And say, when the death-dew lies cold on my brow, "If ever I loved You, my Ishi, 'tis now." Once in Christ, in Christ forever; nothing from His love can sever.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You want to love yourself, but consider this: do you not already wish good for yourself? You do not envy yourself; you want all good things for yourself; you are willing to do whatever it takes for your own wellbeing. That natural care you have for your own life, your own body, your own soul, that is the very self-love Scripture speaks of when it commands, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” You already possess it. You are not lacking it. The mistake lies in imagining that self-love must be felt as a warm admiration or a confident delight, but the love Christ commands begins with the will to do good. You already seek your own good. So stop waiting for a feeling; recognize that the foundation is laid. Now you must build upon it by turning the same will outward.

You ask how to know if you love God. The answer is not in scrutinizing your emotions but in your actions. For the Lord himself said, “If you love Me, feed My sheep.” Love of God and love of neighbor are so woven together that to love your neighbor is to love God. Therefore, do not stand still asking, “Do I love?” but begin doing the work of love. Refuse to let your heart be straitened. Make room for your neighbor. Be the first to show kindness, preferring one another in honor. This is the path that leads to virtue without weariness, because love is the fulfilling of the law. When you pour yourself out in serving others, the fretfulness over your own appearance shrinks. You cannot envy yourself, so why envy the image you see in the mirror? God looks not on the outward form but on the heart. Did He not knit you together in your mother’s womb? Then do not despise His handiwork. Instead, let your eyes be fixed on the Sun of Righteousness, who makes all things radiant.

Declare God’s word, yes. Speak it until faith rises. But let the declaration be wedded to deeds. For love must be warm, intense, without dissimulation. If you would know the security of being loved by God, then love your neighbor with the same care you already give yourself. In doing so, you will find that the question “how do I love myself?” is swallowed up in the greater joy of being enlarged in heart, no longer straitened by introspection but set free to love as Christ loves.

Your question cuts right to the heart of what it means to follow Christ, and the very weariness in it shows you’re taking His words seriously. You’re right to see that the command to love your neighbor as yourself raises a problem when you don’t feel any real love for yourself. But the solution isn’t to try harder to manufacture a feeling of self-love first, because the love the Scriptures are talking about is not primarily a feeling you work up.

There’s a kind of love the world knows, and it’s always looking in the wrong direction. That love, whether it’s directed at another person or at yourself, is essentially self-centered. It grasps for affirmation, it uses others to feel worthy, and it lives on compliments and mirrors. You’ve already tasted the emptiness of that path through the wrong things you mentioned, and that’s actually a sign of God’s grace on your life. He let you see that it doesn’t work. The love God is, the love He has shed abroad in our hearts through Christ, is utterly different. It’s a giving love. God didn’t love us because we were lovely; He loved us while we were yet sinners, and Christ died for the ungodly. That love is not a response to our beauty or worth. It creates worth by giving itself.

So how do you love yourself? Not by staring into the mirror of your own soul trying to find something acceptable. You love yourself by receiving, with a deep and settled confidence, the love God has for you. The lack you feel, the insecurity about your appearance, the fear that you don’t believe what you know is true, all of that is rooted in a place where perfect love has not yet cast out fear. Fear and insecurity can’t be shouted down by declarations, as if saying words often enough will make them true. But as you abide in Christ and let His love be the atmosphere you live in, the truth of who you are in Him displaces the lies.

This changes how you see your own face in the morning. God looks at you through love, and love covers a multitude of sins. He does not see you in your imperfect state, staggering under all the things you dislike about yourself. He sees you in Christ, complete and without fault. That isn’t pretending your flaws aren’t real. It’s recognizing that your real identity is hidden with Christ. When you were joined to Him, the old self that was constantly grasping for worth was crucified with Him. The life you now live, you live by the faith of the Son of God who loved you and gave Himself for you. The place you stop trying to fix your self-image by your own effort is the very place victory begins, because it’s no longer you straining to love yourself, but Christ living in you, and His love being perfected in you.

You asked whether love is action rather than feeling. In the sense that Jesus commanded love, it is always an action of the will that may or may not be accompanied by warm emotion. Walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave Himself for us. That is a self-sacrificing love that moves outward. But when you’re walking in that love, giving yourself to God and to others, something remarkable happens. The fruit of the Spirit is love, and fruit grows from abiding, not from straining. As you stop staring at your own heart asking, “Do I love God? Do I love myself?” and instead simply fix your eyes on the love of Christ that constrains you, the assurance grows quietly. You find you do love Him, not because you worked up a fervent feeling, but because His love for you sparked a responsive love in your heart. The same is true for how you see yourself and how you treat your neighbor.

Your instinct that loving yourself might actually mean loving your neighbor is closer to the truth than you realize. The problem with saying you can’t love your neighbor because you don’t love yourself is that it keeps you looking inward, paralyzed. The command is not, “First love yourself perfectly, then love your neighbor.” The command is to walk in love as Christ loved. You can begin to treat your neighbor with long-suffering kindness right now, not because you feel overflowing self-esteem, but because God has poured His love into you and it’s for giving away. As you give yourself in service to others, focused on their needs instead of your own insecurity, you will find you are actually dwelling in love. And he who dwells in love dwells in God, and God in him. That’s where the healing of self-image lies. It’s found in forgetting yourself in love, not in perfecting yourself for love.

So lay down the heavy burden of trying to feel enough love for yourself. Receive the love of Christ, which is greater than you will ever know. Rest in the fact that you stand before God without fault because you are in Jesus. Let that truth be the bedrock, and then simply walk in love today, doing one small thing that gives yourself away for someone else. Peace be to you, and love with faith from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
