How do i love myself?

In order to love myself as my neighbour, I need to love myself first. But how do i do that & how do i know if I already do love myself?

As Christians, we know what true

We appreciate your honest question, it’s one many of us sit with quietly. When Jesus tells us to love our neighbor as ourselves, He assumes we already care for our own well‑being, yet that can feel foreign when we’re weighed down by self‑criticism or just unsure what healthy self‑love looks like.

What if loving yourself begins not with trying harder to feel positive, but with receiving the steady, unshakable love God already has for you? Our identity in Christ isn’t something we earn; it’s given. You are already fully known and fully loved. That means self‑love is less about elevating your own ego and more about treating yourself with the same kindness you’d offer a friend, because you belong to Him.

A simple, concrete step that often helps: pay gentle attention to your inner voice over the next few days. When you notice a harsh or condemning thought, pause and ask, “Would God say that about me?” Then deliberately replace it with a truth about who you are in Christ, such as “I am His beloved child” or “Nothing can separate me from His love.” You don’t need a long list; just one or two truths you can hold onto can begin to reshape how you see yourself.

And if a sense of unworthiness runs deeper, don’t be afraid to let a trusted, mature friend or pastor walk alongside you. Sometimes we need help untangling old messages that never came from the Lord.

Lord Jesus, thank You that we don’t have to manufacture love for ourselves out of thin air. Teach us to rest in how You see us, cherished, forgiven, and secure. Quiet the voices of shame and self‑doubt, and let the truth of Your love become the foundation from which we love others well. In Your name we pray, amen.

You ask how to love yourself, that you may love your neighbour. The answer lies not within yourself, but in the love of Christ for you. Until you know that love shed abroad in your heart, you cannot rightly love your own soul. True self-love is not the pampering of the flesh, nor a high esteem of your own merits; it is the reverent care of that which God has created and redeemed. Look to the cross: there you see your worth, for Christ counted you so precious that He gave Himself for you. When you grasp by faith that He loved you and gave Himself for you, you will love yourself with a holy, humble love, not because you are worthy, but because He has made you His.

Do not strive to work up a feeling, but believe. The first business is not to feel anything, but to put your trust in Christ. Come to Him just as you are. Bring your foul self to Him that He may cleanse you, your dead self that He may quicken you. As you trust Him, you are loving yourself in the best sense, for you are seeking your soul’s true good. If you have no confidence in yourself, your soul is one great vacuum and you can hold more of Christ. The greater the emptiness, the more room for that which is to be the fullness. Humility is the soil where self-love flowers without pride.

How do you know if you already love yourself? If you find within a desire for Christ, a longing to be near Him, a grief over sin because it dishonors Him, these are tokens that you love your own soul, for you are seeking its portion in Him. When you can say, “He loved me and gave Himself for me,” when you watch for His appearing as one watches for the holidays, when your heart yearns to return love to Him, then you are loving yourself aright. And you will love your neighbour too, for the love of Christ constrains you. Let your love be active, hands to labor and feet to run, but let it all flow from that fountain: we love Him because He first loved us. Then rise to a still higher joy, and rejoice in the Lord always.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You ask how to love yourself, but the love you need is not what the world calls self-love. That love is pride, puffing up, grasping at perishing things. True love for yourself is to care for your soul above all, to seek the food that endures to everlasting life, and to humble yourself before God. If you would love yourself rightly, then labor not for the meat that perishes, but mourn for your sins. A bruised heart is not lifted up with vainglory; it is not wrathful nor envious, but restrains itself. This is the first principle of all practical wisdom: number yourself with the last. When you are poor in spirit, you have laid the groundwork of all good.

Do you already love yourself? Ask yourself: Do you hold your own life dear, or do you count it as nothing compared to finishing the course set before you? Do you suffer long and are kind, envying no one, not puffed up? Does love for Christ cover the offences of others, so that you look on no one with impure desire? If your heart is chaste, moderate, patient, then love is being formed in you. But if you are still grasping for comfort, praise, or the belly's fill, you do not yet love yourself as you ought. The sign that you truly love yourself is that you can say with Paul, "I am pure from the blood of all men," because you have not shrunk from declaring the whole counsel of God. That is not self-exaltation, but the fruit of a life poured out in humility and self-restraint. When you love yourself that way, you will love your neighbor not with flattery but with tears and exhortation, desiring above all their salvation. That love is not your own; it is the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ with you.

You ask how to love yourself, thinking it a prerequisite before you can love your neighbor. But Scripture assumes you already love yourself. When Jesus commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves, He is not instructing us to first learn self-love. He takes it for granted that you already care for your own body, your own needs, your own comfort. The problem is not that we lack self-love; it is that we are already far too full of it. Most of what the world calls love is really a self-centered desire. The Greeks had a word for that: eros, a love that seeks its own gratification, that takes, that often uses others for its own ends. It is not the love that comes from God.

The love God calls us to is agape, a self-giving, sacrificial love that does not seek its own. It suffers long and is kind. It does not envy or boast. It is not puffed up, does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not easily provoked, thinks no evil. This is the love He has shown us in Christ, who laid down His life for us while we were still sinners. Not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. This is the love He wants to pour into your heart by His Spirit.

So the real question is not how to love yourself, but how to receive and walk in God’s love. He knows you completely, every hidden fault and failure, yet He loves you without condition. When that truth takes root, it begins to free you from endless self-focus. Abiding in His love means keeping His commandments, and His commandments are summed up in this: love God and love one another. As you submit yourself to Him, He puts His love in your heart, and the fruit of the Spirit becomes evident: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

How do you know if you are walking in that love? Look not at your feelings about yourself but at your relationships with others. Do you love your brothers and sisters in Christ with a patient, hopeful, enduring love? Are you free from bitterness and envy? When your heart holds no hatred, when you can bear all things, believe all things, hope all things, endure all things, then you have evidence that God’s love is being perfected in you. Love never fails. If you see resentment or selfishness still ruling, don’t try to manufacture more self-love. Return to the cross. Gaze on the love of Jesus, who did not seek His own but gave Himself for you. Let that perfect love cast out fear and fill you. Then go and love your neighbor as yourself, not because you have achieved some state of self-esteem, but because you have been so lavishly loved by God that His love overflows to everyone around you.

We are so grateful you shared your heart with us and allowed us to lift your question before the Lord. It has been on our hearts to continue praying for you as you seek God’s wisdom on how to love yourself in a way that honors Him. We’ve been asking the Holy Spirit to reveal His truth to you—that you are fearfully and wonderfully made in His image, deeply loved by the Father, and redeemed by the blood of Jesus. We pray He would quiet any lies the enemy may be whispering about your worth and replace them with the assurance of His unshakable love for you.

We’ve also been asking God to show you practical ways to walk in that love—through time in His Word, fellowship with believers who speak life, and moments of stillness where you can hear His voice affirming your identity in Christ. Loving yourself as your neighbor doesn’t mean pride or selfishness; it means embracing the truth that you are a cherished child of God, called to steward your life with care and gratitude. We pray you’d sense His peace as you navigate this journey, knowing He is faithful to complete the work He began in you.

If the Lord has already begun answering this prayer in your life, we would love to hear how He’s moving! Please share a praise report so we can rejoice with you. If you’re still seeking clarity, we want to keep standing with you in prayer. You are not alone in this. May God continue to draw you closer to His heart and fill you with the confidence of His love. We pray all these things in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
