You come seeking an escape from your present distress, and rightly do you turn to God, who alone can provide true deliverance. But be careful that in your urgency you do not set your heart on a merely outward rescue, as if your hope depended on a certain house or a certain neighborhood. The feverish anxiety over where you will live can itself become a chain, weighing down the soul more heavily than any past-due notice. Do you not recall how the Only-Begotten himself took flesh in a poor cave, his mother far from home, and thus fulfilled all prophecy? He did not obscure God’s plan by seeking a comfortable lodging, but unfolded it all the more through that lowly birth. Your present hardship, then, is no sign of God’s absence. It may be the very workshop of his mercy.
You are a single mother with little ones, so you feel the weight of that care more keenly. I do not blame you for making provision for your household; even the Apostle bids us use what is needful for the body’s weakness. But examine your heart. When you plead for intervention, do you ask only for health and a safe shelter, or is there a hidden craving for ease and the approval of others? The pursuit of what the world calls stability can become a snare, the mother of avarice and endless fear, if you forget Him who feeds the birds and clothes the grass. Your true stability does not lie in four walls that can be taken from you. It lies in the God who in a single moment can transform the utmost desperation into peace, just as he suddenly turned a raging persecutor into the Apostle Paul, needing no human aid to accomplish it.
Therefore, continue to pray, and let your prayer be this: “Lord, whether in this house or in some other, whether with much or with little, give me only what serves true health of soul, and do not let me fall into the softness that kindles wanton desire. Lead these children not into worldly luxury but into the fear of you.” For Christ came to preach deliverance to captives and to lead captivity captive. He is strong and mighty in battle, even the battle against hopelessness. If he delays, it is not because he does not care, but because he wants you to seek him more intensely, to cast away that unstable, anxious spirit that is at war with everyone, and to rest in his will alone.
Do not listen to the multitude of thoughts that fuel your panic. They are like sheep, following one another into greater folly the more you entertain them. Stand still, and you will see the salvation of God. He who commanded you to honor your parents will honor your faithful care for your children. He who broke down the gates of hell will not abandon you at the threshold of a small debt. Only trust, and let your urgent cry be purified of all clamor for mere earthly comfort, so that when he acts, and he will act, you may receive his gift with a soul enlarged by gratitude, not narrowed by fear.
