Heavenly Father, we bow our knees before You, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. We come before You in humility, acknowledging that apart from You, we can do nothing. Lord, we ask that You would grant us, according to the riches of Your glory, to be strengthened with power through Your Spirit in our inner being. May Christ dwell in our hearts through faith, so that we, being rooted and grounded in love, may have the power to comprehend with all the saints what is the width, length, depth, and height of Your love, yes, to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge. We also rebuke any spirit of complacency or lukewarmness that may have crept into our lives. The enemy would love nothing more than for us to settle for less than all that You have for us. But we declare, Lord, that we will not be satisfied with a shallow faith. We hunger and thirst for more of You, more of Your power, more of Your love, more of Your presence. Stir within us a holy dissatisfaction until we are fully surrendered to Your will and walking in the fullness of what You have called us to be.

Father, we thank You that You are able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us. To You be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. We trust in Your faithfulness, knowing that as we seek You with all our hearts, You will reveal Yourself to us in greater measure. When the apostle penned that prayer, he wasn't looking for a fleeting emotional lift but for a deep, steady anchoring of the heart in a love that holds us up when everything else shifts. We have found that God often answers this request not with a single dramatic moment but through the ordinary grace of showing up day after day, a quiet confidence that the Spirit is fortifying our inner person even when we don't feel it.

One simple way we've seen this unfold is when we pause in the middle of daily life, before a meeting, while washing dishes, in a moment of anxiety, and quietly re-offer the same prayer for ourselves and someone we care about. It trains our eyes to see how Christ's love is already at work in the wide, long, high, and deep places of our actual lives. The fullness of God rarely rushes in like a flood; more often it rises like a tide, slowly filling every crevice as we keep our hearts turned toward Him.

We join you in that holy ache for more of Him.

Lord Jesus, we ask together that Your Spirit would strengthen us in our inmost being, that You would make Your home in our hearts through trust. You have lifted up a prayer straight from the inspired Word, and it is a petition after the very heart of heaven. Mark well that every clause hinges upon the work of God the Holy Spirit. Strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man, this is the foundation. Christ dwelling in the heart by faith, this is the Spirit’s grand design. To comprehend the dimensions of a love that surpasses knowledge and to be filled unto all the fullness of God, these are no achievements of the flesh, but the sovereign operations of the Comforter who takes of the things of Christ and shows them unto us.

How many miss this! They would exalt their own doings, willings, feelings, and prayings into the place of Christ’s blood and righteousness. That is not of the Holy Spirit, for He glorifies Christ. He never leads a soul to say, “I am not fit to come to Christ,” as though fitness were found in us. That is the whisper of the destroyer, not the Spirit’s gentle voice. The Spirit lays you low to reveal the greatness of Christ’s salvation, bringing you to utter dependence, for without Him you can do nothing. Therefore, honor, reverence, worship God the Holy Spirit, in whom lies your only hope of seeing Jesus.

And what does He show? A fullness in Christ, all the fullness of the Godhead bodily, an inexhaustible treasury of grace, wisdom, power, and love. In Him there is a fullness of comfort in affliction, guidance in prosperity, and every divine attribute. It pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell, and it dwells there now. Do not think you serve a little Christ or a stingy Lord. His is the God of the hills and the valleys, and He is able to do exceeding abundantly above all you ask or think. This fullness is in Christ for you who trust Him, not locked away, but vested in His people. You have only to ask and receive.

But it needs the Holy Spirit to direct your heart into the love of God. Many know of that love as a blind man knows of an Alpine landscape, poor knowledge indeed! Others have tasted, talked, and sung of it. Yet to be rooted and grounded there, to grasp its width, length, depth, and height, is a transfiguring work of the Spirit, setting Christ before you in the light of God’s own glory. See the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ! In every incident of His life, from Bethlehem’s manger to Calvary’s cross and the open tomb, God shines forth. He is the power of God and the wisdom of God; He has borne the consequences of sin for all who believe, making a full atonement, satisfying divine justice, and bringing peace.

Cry mightily to God, then, that the Holy Spirit would so illuminate the words of Christ that they shine like fixed stars in your soul. Expect that He will expel every unbelieving thought that limits the Holy One of Israel. Does a voice whisper that you will not live up to your profession? Cast it out, Christ is your life. Your sufficiency is of God. The Spirit’s office is to glorify Jesus by receiving of His fullness and announcing it to your heart. So bow your knees with boldness, not fearing to ask for all the apostle prayed, for the Father delights to grant these riches according to His glory. To Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

The weight of this prayer you carry presses upon your own soul because the Apostle bows his knees for you, not to a distant overlord but to the Father from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named. When you ask for strength in the inner person, you ask for nothing less than the Holy Spirit to fortify the very core of your being, where no human eye can see and no human power can reach. That strength is given according to the riches of His glory, not measured out sparingly, and its purpose is singular: that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith. This indwelling is not a passing visit. It is a permanent habitation, and from it flows everything else you seek.

You long to comprehend the dimensions of Christ’s love, its width and length and depth and height. But note well: this knowledge is impossible to human reason alone, for it surpasses knowledge. How then can you grasp it? Only by being rooted and grounded in love, together with all those set apart for God. Love is both the root and the soil, the foundation that enables you to apprehend what the intellect cannot. The love of Christ is not merely a doctrine to be studied; it is a living reality tasted by those in whom He dwells. When Paul says this love surpasses knowledge, he does not mean it is hidden, but that human comprehension cannot exhaust it. Yet you will know it truly, even intimately, if Christ takes up residence within you. From that indwelling, the Spirit leads you into the fullness of God, which is not a distant vision but a filling with every virtue of which God is full, so that you become a vessel brimming with His own character.

Do not separate this filling from daily life. The same grace that promises eternal glory demands a present transformation. You cannot strain forward to the heights while your feet are mired in petty passions. Gluttony, ease, and lust have destroyed many, as they did those in Sodom and the wilderness. A soft and dissipated life closes the heart to the Spirit’s strengthening. If you desire to be filled with all the fullness of God, then make room for God. Cast out whatever competes for that inner space, entertainments that dull the soul, desires that chain you to the belly, ambitions that feed pride. The love of Christ is a jealous love; it will not share its dwelling.

And remember, this prayer is not solitary. The Apostle prays that you may comprehend with all the holy ones. The knowledge of Christ’s love is given in the communion of the church, where love binds hearts together in one mind. Strive for unity, not a mere human agreement but a like-mindedness rooted in Christ Jesus Himself. Love one another with that same love that considers another’s good as one’s own. Where such love reigns, God grants patience, consolation, and a foretaste of eternal blessings.

The power at work within you is the same power that can do exceedingly abundantly above all you ask or even think. Do not be discouraged by your own weakness; that is the very condition for the Spirit’s might to be perfected. Glorify God in your body and spirit, for the glory belongs to Him in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all generations. Lay hold of this promise not as a distant hope but as a present reality, using every effort to walk worthy of the calling, and you will find your life itself becoming a doxology. The fullness you seek is not a future acquisition but a present saturation, if only you will bow your knees and open your heart. The Father gives the Spirit without measure to those who ask, and the Spirit makes a temple of your soul. Christ seated there becomes your light, your love, your very life. And in that union, you will know the love that surpasses knowledge, filled to the brim with the life of God Himself. Amen.
