This prayer is a profound declaration of our dependence on the Father, our faith in Christ’s indwelling presence, and our longing to be filled with the fullness of God. We join with you in seeking the Holy Spirit’s strength and power to root us in love, to comprehend the vast dimensions of Christ’s love, and to overflow with the presence of God in every area of our lives.

Father, we bow our knees before You, the Creator of heaven and earth, the One who names every family in heaven and on earth. You alone are worthy of all glory, honor, and praise. We ask that You would strengthen us with power through Your Spirit in our inner beings, so that Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith. Lord, we recognize that without Your Spirit, we are weak and prone to wander. But with You, we are more than conquerors through Christ who loves us (Romans 8:37). Fill us afresh today with Your might, that we may stand firm against the schemes of the enemy and walk in the victory that Christ has already won for us.

We pray that we would be rooted and grounded in love, Your love, Father, which surpasses all understanding. Help us to comprehend, with all the saints, the width, length, depth, and height of Christ’s love. This love is not merely an emotion but a sacrificial, unchanging, and eternal reality. Father, we long to be filled with all the fullness of God. Lord, if there are areas in our lives where we have grieved Your Spirit, through sin, unbelief, or resistance to Your will, we repent. Cleanse us by the blood of Jesus, and renew a right spirit within us (Psalm 51:10). Help us to walk in step with Your Spirit, bearing the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

We declare that no weapon formed against us shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we stand on the promise that You will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). Thank You, Father, for the privilege of coming before Your throne with boldness, knowing that You hear us and that Your power is at work within us. We’re so grateful for this prayer, it’s one we return to often for ourselves, and we’re joining you in it today with glad hearts. There’s something deeply grounding about praying Paul’s words over our own lives, not as a formula but as a shared longing: that the Spirit would strengthen us in the hidden places, that Christ would truly feel at home in our hearts, and that we’d begin to grasp just how wide and deep His love really is.

What’s helped us is realizing that this filling isn’t a one-time event but a daily yielding. The Spirit is always at work, and our part is simply to keep showing up, opening our hands in prayer, lingering over these very verses, and letting them sink from head to heart. As we do that, the inner strengthening happens quietly but steadily, often beneath the surface.

We’ve seen too that the “knowing” Paul describes doesn’t always come with a rush of feeling; sometimes it’s the slow, quiet confidence that we are rooted in a love that will never let us go. So as you keep praying this over yourself, maybe let it sit with you in silence for a few minutes each day this week, not to strive, but to let the words rest on you like a familiar song.

Father, we bow with our brother/sister before You, asking that out of Your glorious riches You would strengthen them with power through Your Spirit in their inner being. Your prayer breathes the very spirit of the apostle, and I rejoice that your heart longs for such inward blessings. To be strengthened by the Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith, this is the very marrow of true religion. All fullness dwells in Christ, as the Scripture testifies, and of that fullness you may receive. There is a fullness of essential Deity in Him, a fullness of atoning efficacy, a fullness of justifying righteousness, a fullness of comfort, guidance, wisdom, power, and love. It pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell, and it dwells there permanently, inexhaustibly, toward God and toward men.

But do you ask, How shall I know this strengthening, this indwelling, this love which passes knowledge? I answer, It comes not by straining, nor by striving, but by faith, by looking unto Jesus. Faith is not to believe that Christ died for you in some abstract sense; it is to trust yourself wholly into His hands, to lean your entire weight upon Him. As the hymn line melted a thoughtless heart, “Does Jesus really love me? Is He the Lover of my soul?”, so you must apprehend that He loved you long before the world was made, and everything God does to His people is love, even when it wears a disguise. The love of Christ is not earned by our devotion; He well knew that if He laid down His life, He would get no love in return from those for whom He died unless He Himself created it. And He does create it, by His own gentle power, as He calls us personally, by name, and binds us with the cords of a man, the bands of His love.

Oh, that you might have such a sight of Christ as God’s Salvation, not only from guilt, but from the power of sin, that your love would be inflamed! A deep sense of forgiven sin breeds a burning love. Have you looked to the cross and seen that love in its width and length and depth and height? Then love begets love, and you will spend and be spent for Him. The Spirit’s strength comes not by terrors that harden, but by that still small voice which melts the heart. Yield to it now; resist no more. What do you here, after so much love and mercy? Christ is the Husband of His Church, and He says, “Ishi,” my Husband, there is a union that can never be destroyed. Once joined to Him, you are filled with all the fullness of God, for all the necessary power dwells in Him. Then you will comprehend, with all the saints, that love which surpasses knowledge, and be filled to overflowing. Now unto Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think, trust Him now, and He will never fail you.

This prayer you offer from the Apostle’s words is a treasure beyond all price, a petition that reaches into the very depths of what it means to be a Christian. It is not a small thing you ask. To be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your heart through faith, to comprehend the vast dimensions of Christ’s love, and to be filled with all the fullness of God, these are the heights of what our Lord desires for His own.

See first how Paul bends his knees to the Father. He does not begin with his own resolve or labors, but with humble prayer, acknowledging that such blessings come only from the riches of God’s glory. So you too must learn: this is not a gift earned by merit, but one bestowed by love. For the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts, not measured out sparingly, but poured out like a fountain before our struggles. He has given us the Holy Spirit, and where the Spirit is, there Christ is also. The whole Trinity, undivided, makes Its home with the one who believes. This is what it means to have Christ dwelling within: not a distant knowledge, but an indwelling presence that transforms the inner man.

Yet you ask to comprehend the breadth, length, depth, and height of Christ’s love, a love that passes knowledge. How can this be? The Apostle himself confesses it is a thing above human reach. But understand this: to know that it surpasses knowledge is itself a form of knowing. And it is given to us, not by reasoning, but through the indwelling of the Spirit. When Christ lives in your heart through faith, rooted and grounded in love, then you will know this love, not by measuring it, but by experience, as one who has been seized by its immensity. This is the knowledge vouchsafed to the saints: not a dry doctrine, but a living grasp of how wide and long and high and deep is the love God has for us, shown above all on the Cross.

And to be filled with all the fullness of God? This means being filled with every virtue of which God is full, and it points also to the right worship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The Spirit who raised Christ from the dead makes the body dead to sin and alive to righteousness. This is not a life that yields to death, but one that wears out death itself. Such is the ease of the race when the Spirit runs alongside us. So do not be frightened when you hear of mortifying the flesh; it is the viciousness, not the essence of the body, that is put to death, and in its place you receive immortal life.

Now, because you have prayed this Scripture, do not let any present sorrow or confusion overthrow you. Even the Apostles, when told Christ was going to the Father, had sorrow fill their hearts, yet they learned later what He meant. In all things, give place to God’s providence. He who did not spare His own Son but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him freely give us all things? The power at work within us is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think. Therefore, chase after virtue, flee vice, and set your hopes not on earthly riches or freedom from trouble, but on having confidence toward God. Those who are poor for Christ’s sake, those who possess the treasure of a bold faith, these are the truly rich.

To Him then be glory in the Church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

You are pleading for the very thing Paul bowed his knees to ask, and that is a cry the Father delights to answer. When we ask to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, we are asking for something only He can do. It is not about trying harder to muster up more discipline or forcing a feeling of devotion. It is about a power that works in us, a strength that comes from the Spirit taking hold of our deepest, hidden self. This is the doorway to what you long for, that Christ would settle down and feel perfectly at home in your heart through faith.

But notice what this prayer is rooted in and what it builds upon. You are praying to know a love that surpasses knowledge, to grasp the width and length and depth and height. That is immense. The breadth of His love sweeps across every boundary and every kind of person. The length of it endures forever, long before your first sin and long after your last failure. The depth of it is exposed fully at the cross, where He who was in the form of God emptied Himself and went to the lowest place for you. And its height lifts you to sit with Him in heavenly places. This is no shallow emotional sentiment. It is a divine, self-sacrificing, giving love, a love wholly unlike the self-centered impulses that masquerade as love in our world. God’s love for you is uncaused by you. You cannot buy it with your performance or quench it with your stumbling. It flows from the riches of His glory, and it is yours to receive.

To be rooted and grounded in such love means we draw our nourishment from it. Just as a plant sinks its roots into the soil for life, your whole inner being is designed to draw its worth, security, and joy from being loved by God. To be grounded in it means love becomes the foundation on which everything else in your life stands. This is where true comprehension begins. We do not learn the dimensions of Christ’s love by reading it like a map; we know it by experiencing it together with all the saints, by finding our place in the family of God where this love flows. We love one another with this very love, not with empty words, but in deed and in truth. That is the sign. It assures our hearts before Him. I cannot manufacture this kind of love for a difficult person on my own, but as He fills me and Christ dwells within, His love for them is what emerges.

And this leads to the highest petition: to be filled with all the fullness of God. That is a staggering request, that there would be so much of God Himself filling your life that your fleshly, self-seeking nature finds no empty corner to occupy. This is not about being a little improved; it is about being overflowing. The love that is shed abroad in your heart by the Spirit is the very thing that pushes out fear, selfishness, and pride. It is a love superior to any gift or sacrifice, for without it, even the most impressive acts of devotion amount to nothing. It is the fruit of the Spirit, the permanent mark of His indwelling.

So come before Him now with this prayer on your lips. Ask Him to strengthen you with His power in the inner man. Ask Him to so fill you that Christ would be the uncontested dweller in every room of your heart. Ask that you would know this love that takes an eternity to unfold, the love that says, “Rise up, my love, and come away.” He is able. He will do it. And He will do it far beyond even the boldest petitions you have just lifted before His throne. To Him be the glory, in the church, by Christ Jesus, through all generations.
