Prayer such as this bows the soul before the throne of the heavenly Father, and it is a plea after the very heart of God. What you have set before the Lord in this portion of Ephesians is no small petition, it is the cry for an inner strengthening by the Holy Spirit, that Christ might dwell in your heart by faith, and that you might be rooted and grounded in love. This is a prayer that lays hold upon the very fullness of God, and I am glad to see you wrestling with such words, for they are the language of a soul that hungers after more of Christ.
The apostle Paul here kneels not upon his own merit, but before the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. Mark well that this access to the Father comes through the Son, for there is no other way to perceive the love of God or to be filled with His Spirit. You cannot come to the Father except you come by Jesus Christ, who is the one Mediator between God and man. All the drawings of the Father are toward Christ, and the Holy Spirit’s work is ever to glorify Him. If we would be strengthened with might in the inner man, we must look to Christ, for in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily. It pleased the Father that in Him should all fullness dwell, fullness of atoning efficacy, fullness of justifying righteousness, fullness of sanctifying power, fullness of comfort in every trial. This fullness is not a distant storehouse locked up, but it is in Jesus now, and it is communicative to every believing sinner. From His fullness have all we received, and grace for grace.
You have asked that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. This is the hinge of the whole matter. Christ dwelling in the heart is the secret of all spiritual strength. It is not a mere influence or a transient visit, but an abiding indwelling. And how does He dwell there? By faith. Faith is the open hand that receives Him, the door that welcomes the King of glory. But remember, this faith is not of ourselves; it is the gift of God, and no man can come to Christ except the Father draw him. If you have come to Christ, it is because divine love has drawn you, and that same love will keep you. The love of Christ which passes knowledge is the very atmosphere in which the inner man grows strong. To know this love, its breadth embracing all nations, its length reaching from eternity to eternity, its depth going down to the deepest guilt, its height soaring to the throne of God, this is to be filled with all the fullness of God. And yet this love can never be fully measured, for it surpasses knowledge. It is the most excellent of all the sciences, and the soul that learns it is made wise unto salvation.
You long to be filled to overflowing with God’s Spirit. This is a holy ambition, and it delights the heart of the Lord. But remember that the fullness is in Christ, and it is by union with Him that we receive it. The same power that raised Christ from the dead is at work in us who believe, and this power is available now. Do not think that you must wait for some future day to be strengthened, the power that will finally transform these vile bodies is the same power that operates in the church at this very hour. Cry mightily to the Lord Jesus, stir up the power that dwells in Him, and give Him no rest until He puts forth that energy in your soul. The conquering power over sin, the sanctifying energy, the strength to suffer and to conquer, all these are yours in Him. You need not fear that the fullness in Christ will ever be exhausted. It is as infinite as the Godhead itself, and it is permanent, enduring forever. Let your praises abide where the fullness abides.
And what shall we say of love? The love of the Father is made known to us in the gift of His Son. Christ is ours, our Savior, our Friend, our Lord. When we grasp this by faith, we realize the glory of the Fatherhood of God, and in our feebleness we cling to divine strength. The love of Christ constrains us; it is not a cold duty but a burning affection. The more we comprehend the depths of our sin and the freeness of His forgiveness, the more our love will be kindled. This love will manifest itself in devotion, in a life laid down for Him, in an eagerness to do His will. It is the voluntariness of our service that is the excellence of it; everything in the religion of Christ is of love. If you know this love, you need not be ashamed in any company, you know more than all the philosophers could teach.
Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen. Go forward in this prayer, and let your faith expect great things. The power is not in your praying, but in the Christ to whom you pray. He is able, and He will do it. Only keep close to Jesus, and the Holy Spirit will strengthen you, Christ will dwell in you, and you will be filled with all the fullness of God.
