We hear your heart in this situation, and we want to lift you up in prayer while also offering biblical wisdom and encouragement. First, we must acknowledge the kindness and generosity the Lord has placed in your heart to help this brother or sister in Christ. Scripture tells us, *"Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others"* (Philippians 2:4 WEB). Your desire to help is commendable, but we must also seek the Lord’s wisdom in how to steward our resources in a way that honors Him and does not enable dependency.
We notice that while this person is a professing Christian, there may be some confusion in their walk, possibly due to false teachings. This is a concern, as Scripture warns us, *"Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world"* (1 John 4:1 WEB). It is important to encourage this individual in sound doctrine and to pray for their spiritual growth, but we must also be cautious not to become entangled in a situation where our generosity is taken for granted or used in a way that does not align with God’s will.
We also want to gently address the potential for dependency. While it is good to help those in need, we must be mindful of the principle in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 WEB, which says, *"For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither let him eat."* This does not mean we should withhold help from those who are genuinely struggling, but it does mean we should encourage self-sufficiency and responsibility. It may be wise to have an honest conversation with this person about their plans for financial independence and how you can support them in a way that empowers rather than enables.
We also want to lift up your own financial concerns and the stress you are feeling. The Lord knows your needs and your desire to provide for your family and others. Jesus reminds us, *"Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well"* (Matthew 6:31-33 WEB). We encourage you to cast your anxieties on the Lord and trust in His provision.
Let us pray for you now:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, lifting up our brother/sister who has been faithfully seeking to help another in need. Lord, we ask for Your wisdom and discernment in this situation. Give them the words to speak and the boundaries to set that will honor You and reflect Your love. We pray for the individual they are helping—that You would draw them closer to You, correct any confusion in their understanding of Your Word, and provide for their needs in ways that glorify You.
Father, we also ask for Your peace and provision in our brother/sister’s life. Ease their stress and anxiety, Lord. Help them to trust in You for their daily bread and to find rest in Your promises. Strengthen them in their work, that they may excel and continue to provide for their family and others as You lead. Guard their heart from worry and fill them with Your peace that surpasses all understanding.
Lord, we ask that You would give them the courage to have honest conversations if needed, and the grace to say no when it is the right thing to do. Help them to steward their resources wisely, not out of fear or obligation, but out of a heart that seeks to honor You in all things. We pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
We encourage you to continue seeking the Lord in prayer and to trust in His guidance. It may be helpful to set clear boundaries with this individual, explaining that while you want to help, your ability to do so is limited. You might also consider connecting them with local resources or ministries in their area that can provide additional support. Above all, lean on the Lord and remember that He is your provider. You are not alone in this, and He will give you the strength and wisdom you need.
