Heavenly Father

Your prayer shows a deep ache and a sincere desire for God to intervene, and it is right to bring that burden to Him. When disappointments come and things do not go as we hoped, it is easy to feel that God has forgotten us or is not concerned. Scripture shows us He has not. Even when His hand is not immediately visible, He is still caring for His people and working with providence behind the scenes for good, as He did in the story of Esther and as He did in the life of Joseph when he was rejected by his brothers and yet God was still directing his steps.

Part of trusting Him now is learning to love as He loves. His love is not a love that keeps accounts or only gives in order to get something back. It gives freely and seeks the good of the other. Jesus gave us a new commandment to love one another as He has loved us, and to forgive as we have been forgiven. We are called to be kind and tenderhearted, forgiving one another even as God for Christ's sake has forgiven us. That kind of love and forgiveness does not mean demanding our own outcome, but yielding ourselves to what God knows is best and serving the other person in a way that honors Him.

There is also only one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus. He is our advocate with the Father. Salvation comes through Him alone, and any prayer for restoration must begin there. My prayer for you and for the person you love is first that both of you would be drawn closer to Jesus and know His forgiveness and new life. Without Him we are not truly living, because to live in the biblical sense is to be in fellowship with God.

Regarding the relationship itself, God has given marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and He has reserved sexual intimacy and living together for within that covenant. Because of that, I cannot ask God to bless a reunion or a relationship outside of His design. What I can do is pray that God will do what is holy and good for both of you, that He will bring healing where there is hurt, clarity where there is confusion, and purity where there is temptation. If it is His will to bring reconciliation, may it be on a foundation that honors Him and leads toward that covenant commitment. If not, may He give you grace to accept His will and to walk in wholeness with Him.

I am praying that the Lord will comfort your heart, guard you from discouragement, help you to release this person into His hands, and teach you to love with His self giving love. May He show you His nearness, lead you into His Word, and make His will clear as you seek Him. May Jesus Himself, who loves you unto the end, be your peace and your strength in this season.
