I have heard your request, and I do not cease to lift you before the throne of grace. But consider also: when Lazarus lay sick, Christ declared, “This sickness is not unto death.” Yet the man died and lay in the tomb. The sisters heard one thing and saw another, and still they were not offended, but came to Jesus trusting that He spoke truly, though the event seemed contrary. So you also, even if the fever lingers or the pain increases, do not doubt His love. He often permits the body to be pressed so that the soul may be healed. For sickness teaches what health conceals, how fleeting this world is, how vain its comforts.

Do not let your heart be troubled by envy of those who seem well and strong, for many lie in health on soft beds yet are more ill within, burning with passions and discontent. A man free from fever who still cries out as if sick is more pitiable than the feverish. Are you in pain? Then you are in the school of Christ, where the lesson is detachment from all that perishes. The fever that rages in your flesh is but a shadow of that hotter fever, the love of money, the lust of the eyes, the pride of life, which consumes the soul eternally. Be healed within, and the body’s sickness will be light to bear.

Therefore I pray for you, not only that the fever may leave, but that patience and thanksgiving may enter. May the Lord who formed your frame rebuke the infection and restore you to health, in body and soul. And whether He grants recovery soon or calls you to wait, trust that He works all for your eternal good. Let your heart say with Job, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him.”

Let us pray together: O Lord Jesus Christ, Physician of the sick, who touched the fevered and the leprous, look upon this sufferer. Cool the heat, still the cough, cleanse the whole body from this infection.
